Chapter 6 I Saved an Old Man

Sophia left the nightclub. It was too late to go home now, thanks to that scumbag!

Sharon had probably told their father a version of the story that twisted things in her favor, and Sophia could not be bothered to try to explain the truth.

Oh well, let him think whatever he wants! He had always treated the two sisters differently.

There were two reasons why Sophia had come back and gotten involved with Vincent.

First, her father had cited the engagement that had been arranged by their mother when they were children as an excuse to get them together.

Second, she worried that her grandmother would be alone in the hospital.

Sophia did not want to endure the fake politeness of Sharon and her mother every day.

She was going to flag down a taxi on the street and head to the hospital to visit her grandmother when her phone rang.

It was a call from her father, Lawrence Buck.

She hesitated, but eventually answered the call.

Before she could say anything, his voice, laced with restrained anger, came through the line. “Sophia, where are you? You better come back right now!”

Her expression remained cold. “What’s the matter? Just tell me.”

Lawrence continued, “Sharon said you put something in her and Vincent’s drinks and planned to catch them together in bed. You want to break off the engagement, don’t you? Can you give me some peace? Do you realize how much damage this will cause the company? Do you know how much criticism our family will face if the marriage doesn’t go through?”

See? He was always accusing her of something without any evidence.

Sophia took a deep breath, suppressed the rising anger in her heart, and replied, “I didn’t do anything.”

He clearly didn’t believe her, and his tone grew more serious.

“You didn’t do anything? So you’re saying Sharon is falsely accusing you? I know you’re not happy with your engagement, but it was arranged by your mother when you were children. I wouldn’t force you into this if the company weren’t in crisis and we didn’t need help from the Baxter family. You have no idea how important these alliances through marriage are for the upper class. Once you marry Vince, you’ll become the lady of the house. That’s something a lot of other people can only dream about. And Vince is a handsome boy who treats you well. What else do you want?”

Sophia’s voice grew even colder. “I already said. Vincent and Sharon hooked up on their own. I didn’t do anything.”

“How are you still trying to dodge your responsibilities?” Lawrence shouted angrily, “Sharon is your sister. Why are you picking on her? How will she face the public if news of this is leaked? You need to behave like a young lady now that you’re back home with us. Get rid of all those bad habits you picked up in the countryside. What kind of person are you? You’re so deceitful at such a young age!”

Sophia thought she had already grown accustomed to Lawrence’s neglect and indifference, but as she listened to his relentless accusations, her heart felt like it was being pricked by needles.

She sneered, “Why did you bring me back here if you think you’re better than me? I don’t understand why you city people think you’re superior to us. Aren’t there plenty of people in the city who can’t tell right from wrong? You think they’re all weak and helpless, but in reality, they’re more cunning and ruthless than anyone else!”

After she hung up the phone, she took a moment to calm her emotions before heading toward the street.

She saw an elderly man leaning against a car just a few steps away. He was clutching his chest, and his face was contorted in pain, as if he was having a heart attack.

She frowned and walked over to him.

“What’s wrong, sir?” Sophia asked as she approached the man.

The man grabbed her tightly. He could not say a word as his breath became increasingly rapid.

Sophia checked his symptoms, and it was just as she thought. He was having a heart attack.

His pulse was weak and irregular.

She asked urgently, “Do you have any medication with you?”

The man shook his head as he gripped her tighter, and his face turned pale.

Sophia reassured him, “Don’t be afraid, sir. I’m a doctor, and I’ll help you. Just relax and stay calm.”

She helped him sit by the side of the road. Luckily, she had her set of needles with her. Otherwise, the man would have been in real danger.

She knelt on the ground to roll up his sleeve, and inserted the needles into several acupuncture points on this arm.

In less than ten minutes, the man’s symptoms had significantly improved. His breathing became more regular, and his complexion cleared as well.

Sophia sighed with relief. “How are you feeling now, sir?”

Jeffrey Patton nodded. “I’m much better. Thank you, young lady.”

She said, “No problem. You have a heart condition, so you should carry your medication with you when you go out. You could have been in real danger today.”

She removed the needles and advised, “You’re fine for now, but I’d recommend that your family take you to the hospital for more comprehensive treatment.”

Jeffrey nodded again, “Alright, I’ll call my grandson.”

With that, he took out his phone and made a call.
