The Heir They Came To Kill

The black wolf stood squarely in the middle of the ruined entrance, towering over the shattered wooden beams.

Smoke curled lazily around its enormous body, and its glowing golden eyes never left mine.

Its voice echoed through the vast, ruined Grand Hall with terrifying clarity:

"We found the heir."

Silence followed. The heavy, unexpected words seemed to steal the very air straight from everyone's lungs.

My heartbeat thundered like a war drum inside my chest.

Heir?

The monstrous rogue couldn't possibly be talking about me. I was nothing. A servant. A prisoner in the very pack that had once been my loving home.

I looked around frantically, desperately hoping someone would laugh out loud and call it a tragic mistake.

No one did.

Instead, every single pair of eyes in the hall slowly turned toward me.

"What heir?" one visiting Alpha demanded, stepping forward.

"The girl?" another whispered in shock.

"That's impossible."

Buck's dark gaze hardened instantly. Before he even realized he was doing it, his feet moved, his broad shoulders stepping directly in front of me and blocking me from the rogue's line of sight.

"Who are you?" Buck demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low growl.

The black wolf's lips curled back over massive yellow fangs into a terrifying grin. "I don't answer to pups."

The sharp insult caused several Alpha delegates to growl in anger.

Damon stepped forward, his silver wolf already half-surfaced beneath his skin, claws extending from his fingertips. "You've invaded my territory. You've murdered my warriors. You dare stand before the high Alpha Council?"

The rogue let out a cold, unsettling laugh that sent chills down my spine. "I came for one person, Alpha."

He lifted his massive head, staring straight over Buck's shoulder at me. "Hand over Athena Grant."

A shocked murmur spread across the hall.

Buck slowly turned his head toward Damon, his voice laced with venom. "You said her name was just 'servant'."

Damon answered without a single second of hesitation. "She is my servant."

Nothing more. Nothing less.

Buck didn't miss the subtle, nervous pause before Damon spoke. Neither did Bobby Nash. The elder Alpha quietly exchanged a dark, concerned glance with Ravi.

Something was deeply wrong with this narrative.

My legs felt so weak I thought I might collapse into the dust.

Why did they want me?

I had never left the borders of the Silver Moon Pack in five agonizing years. I had never even laid eyes on a rogue before tonight.

Inside my mind, Nyx stirred uneasily, scratching at my thoughts. Something about that black wolf frightened even her ancient soul.

Suddenly, the rogue began to shift.

Bones cracked loudly. Muscles twisted and reformed beneath slick black fur. Within seconds, a tall, imposing man dressed in dark leather stood where the beast had been.

A jagged long scar ran across his face, intersecting his left eye. His golden eyes gleamed with pure, cruel amusement.

He slowly clapped his calloused hands together, the sound echoing off the stone walls. "Remarkable."

He looked directly at Damon. "You've hidden her well, Alpha Grant."

Damon's face remained an unreadable block of ice. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Liar."

The single word cut through the ambient smoke like a sharp blade.

"You've spent five long years pretending your own sister doesn't exist."

The Grand Hall exploded into a deafening roar of shocked whispers.

"Sister?"

"Did he just say sister?"

"Alpha Damon has a living sister?"

Buck's head snapped sharply toward Damon, then back toward me. His piercing blue eyes filled with sheer disbelief.

"You..." Buck looked back at Damon, his voice shaking with sudden, dark realization. "She's your sister?"

I squeezed my eyes shut, tears slipping down my bruised cheeks.

It was over. The dark truth I had spent five terrifying years forced to hide had finally been violently exposed to the world.

Damon's expression darkened into pure hatred. "She stopped being my sister the night she murdered our parents in cold blood."

The monstrous accusation hit me like a physical blow to the chest, threatening to crush my ribs.

"I didn't..." My voice broke, raspy and trembling. "I didn't kill them."

The desperate words escaped my mouth before I could stop them. It was the very first time in five years I had dared to speak those words aloud to anyone.

The entire hall fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Damon laughed—a harsh, mocking sound. "Still lying, Athena?"

"I've never lied about that night!"

"You expect the high Alpha Council to believe a word out of your filthy mouth?"

"I don't expect anyone to believe me anymore," pain tightened my chest so hard I could barely draw breath, tears blurring my vision. "I stopped hoping for someone to believe me a long time ago."

For the very first time since he had set eyes on me... Buck saw something deep within my tear-stained face.

Not guilt. Not deceit. Only raw, profound heartbreak.

The rogue, Kane, smiled, looking intensely entertained by the unfolding drama.

"Wonderful," he purred softly. "The beautiful lies are finally beginning to crumble."

Buck took a dark, decisive step forward, placing himself firmly between Kane and me. "Who are you?"

"My name doesn't matter to a visiting Alpha."

"It matters if you are standing in my presence on open ground."

Kane chuckled. "Very well. My name is Kane."

At the mention of that name, Bobby Nash's expression completely changed, all color draining from his weathered face. "Kane..." he whispered the name as though it were a dark curse from a forgotten era. "You belong to the Rogue Council."

Kane bowed mockingly toward Bobby. "I see someone in this room still remembers history."

Buck immediately caught the sudden, grave shift in Bobby's posture. "You know him, Bobby?"

"I know of him," Bobby's eyes never left Kane's scarred face. "The Rogue Council has been silent for almost twenty years. We believed they were completely destroyed during the Great Purge."

Kane's smile widened, revealing sharp teeth. "You thought wrong."

Outside the shattered walls, the chaotic sounds of brutal battle continued to rage. Warriors howled in agony, steel clashed against claws, and thick grey smoke rose high into the night sky.

Yet inside the ruined hall... no one moved an inch. Every wolf present sensed that something far more dangerous than a simple border raid was unfolding.

Kane pointed a long, clawed finger directly at me. "Hand her over. She belongs to us."

Buck's expression turned into absolute, unyielding ice. "She belongs to no one."

For a brief, fleeting second... our eyes met. I wasn't entirely sure Buck even realized the terrifying weight of what he had just declared.

But everyone else in the room had heard it. Including Damon.

A flicker of pure, volatile rage crossed my brother's face. "Alpha Buckley," Damon said, his voice forced into a fake, trembling calm. "This is Silver Moon internal territory. I will deal with my own servant."

Buck didn't budge an inch. "Your servant?" He stared Damon down with lethal intensity. "Or your sister?"

The question struck the room like a crack of thunder.

Damon's jaw tightened until his teeth groaned. "I already told you. She murdered our parents."

Buck looked back at me, then squarely back at Damon. "Did she?"

"I watched the flames consume them with my own eyes!"

"That wasn't my question, Damon," Buck's voice dropped an octave, ringing clear over the smoke. "Did you actually see Athena kill them?"

For the very first time that night... Damon hesitated.

It lasted for only a fraction of a heartbeat. But Ravi noticed it. Bobby noticed it. Even I saw the subtle flicker of panic in his dark eyes.

"No," Damon admitted sharply. "I saw enough."

Buck's blue eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "So... you didn't actually witness it."

Damon's fragile composure finally snapped completely. "Are you daring to question an Alpha in his own keep?!"

"I'm questioning a very convenient story."

The room erupted into a flurry of shocked murmurs. No one had ever seen an Alpha openly call out another leader like this—especially over a servant, and especially over a woman he had met merely hours ago.

Damon's dominant Alpha aura suddenly exploded outward through the hall like a shockwave. "You forget whose soil you are standing on, Buckley!"

Buck responded immediately, unleashing his own crushing, ancient Alpha aura to meet it head-on.

The sheer physical force of two dominant Alphas colliding made the air vibrate violently. Candles flickered and died. Several weaker house servants collapsed to their knees, gasping for air as the marble floor beneath their feet began to crack under the invisible pressure.

Ravi immediately drew his blade, stepping between the surrounding warriors. "This is spinning out of control!"

"Enough!" Bobby Nash's thundering voice boomed across the chamber, breaking the oppressive aura stand-off.

Even Kane seemed deeply entertained by the internal war. He slowly began backing toward the shattered entrance archway. "This little family reunion has been thoroughly entertaining, gentlemen. But our primary business isn't finished."

Buck took a dark step toward him. "You aren't leaving this room alive."

"Oh..." Kane offered a wicked, knowing smile. "I already have exactly what I came for."

Confusion swept across the room. "What are you talking about, rogue?!" Damon demanded.

Kane looked directly past the Alphas, his golden eyes locking onto mine with terrifying reverence. "The heir has awakened."

Before anyone could make a move to stop him—

I opened my mouth and let out a raw, agonizing scream.

CRACK-BOOM!

A blinding, violent storm of silver light erupted directly from my chest, exploding outward through the Grand Hall in a massive shockwave.

The sheer magic thrown off by the burst hurled fully armored warriors backward through the air. The remaining stained-glass windows shattered to dust. The ancient Moonstone resting on the stone altar cracked cleanly down the middle with a deafening snap.

Every single wolf in the room was forced to instinctively cover their eyes and bow their heads beneath the sheer weight of the divine power filling the air.

Buck stared in total, unadulterated shock. Bobby's face drained of every last drop of color.

Damon staggered back, whispering a single, horrified word: "No..."

As the brilliant silver light swirled around my body like a living, breathing tempest, picking up dust and debris...

A loud, haunting, magnificent wolf's howl echoed from deep within the forbidden black forest surrounding the estate.

And every single werewolf present realized the impossible had just come to pass.

Athena's wolf... Nyx... had just broken her chains and answered the ancient call.
