Elara's POV

The full moon rose two nights later, and I felt the change in Kael before I ever saw it, a restlessness that crept into him over the course of the afternoon,

His hands flexing at his sides during a meeting with visiting border guards, his voice growing shorter and more clipped as the hours wore on toward evening.

"You should stay in the castle tonight," he told me, finding me in the library where I'd been trying and failing to focus on the text Nyra had left for me.

"I don't know what tonight will look like yet, not with everything Nyra's been testing these past weeks. I won't risk you being anywhere near me if it goes wrong."

"I'm not hiding in my room while you go through this alone," I said, closing the book and standing to face him. "You said yourself the bond responds to intention. If there's a chance being near me helps, even a little, doesn't it make sense for me to be there?"

"And if it doesn't help? If I lose control the way I have every full moon for the past decade?" His jaw was tight, something raw and frightened underneath the careful control he usually wore like armor. "I won't have that be the thing that hurts you, Elara. I won't survive knowing I was the reason."

"Then we do it carefully," I said. "Nyra can be nearby. Soren too. We don't have to test the whole theory blindly tonight. But I'm not going to sit in a locked room while you go through this thinking I abandoned you the moment it got difficult. That's not what this is. That's not what I want us to be."

Something in his expression cracked open at that, the fear giving way to something softer, more vulnerable than I'd seen from him even in our quietest moments at the cottage. "You deserve someone who doesn't ask this much of you. Someone whose worst nights don't come with actual danger attached."

"I deserve to choose for myself what I'm willing to face," I said, echoing words I'd used with Vesna without quite meaning to. "And I choose this. I choose you, tonight and whatever it looks like."

We compromised in the end, Nyra insisting on a warded room deep in the castle, thick stone walls reinforced with old protective symbols she'd spent the afternoon carefully redrawing, Soren stationed just outside the door with strict instructions on when to intervene if things went wrong, and me inside with Kael, close enough to reach him, far enough to run if it truly came to that.

The transformation began just after moonrise, and I'd never watched it happen slowly before, not the way I did that night, Kael's breathing growing ragged as his body began to shift, bones cracking and reshaping in ways that clearly caused him pain despite how many times he'd lived through it before, his eyes flashing between the dark brown I'd grown to know and a wild, feral gold that didn't look like him at all.

"Kael," I said softly, staying still even as every instinct screamed at me to back away from the massive black wolf now pacing the length of the room, muscles coiled tight, a low growl building in his throat that hadn't been there in our fight against the rogues, something angrier, more lost.

He turned toward me, and for one terrible moment I saw nothing familiar in those golden eyes at all, just hunger and rage and something that looked disturbingly like the rogues that had attacked me in the forest, and I heard Soren shift anxiously just outside the door, ready to burst through if I gave any signal at all.

I didn't run.

I stepped forward instead, slow, careful, the way I'd learned to move around skittish animals as a child, and I held out my hand, palm up, the mark on my wrist catching the low candlelight.

"I know you're in there," I said quietly. "I know this isn't all you are. Come back to me, Kael. Please."

The wolf's growl deepened, and for a heartbeat I thought I'd made a terrible mistake, that Vesna's warning and every fear Kael himself had voiced were about to prove true in the worst possible way, and then he lunged.

I didn't have time to flinch before his massive head pushed into my outstretched palm instead of teeth finding my throat, a whine building low in his chest, something desperate and pained, and the mark on my wrist flared bright silver, warmth spreading up my arm and into my chest as I felt something in the room shift, the wild rage bleeding slowly out of the air around us.

"That's it," I whispered, running my free hand along the thick black fur of his neck, feeling him shudder under my touch. "You're still you. You didn't lose yourself. Not tonight."

The wolf sank down slowly until he was lying at my feet, massive head resting against my knee, and I lowered myself carefully to the floor beside him, keeping my hand pressed against the fur over his racing heart, murmuring quiet, steady words until the tension in his enormous body eased fully away.

By the time the moon crossed fully overhead and began its slow descent, Kael shifted back, human and exhausted, curled against me on the stone floor with his head resting in my lap, and I stroked my fingers through his hair while he breathed slow and even, more peaceful than I'd ever seen him.

"You stayed," he murmured, voice rough with exhaustion.

"I told you I would."

"I've never made it through a full moon without losing myself completely. Not once in a hundred years." He turned his face up to look at me, something wondering and raw in his expression. "You did that. Whatever this is between us, Elara, it's real. It's working."

I bent down and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead, the first real kiss either of us had dared since the forest, and felt the mark between us pulse warm and steady, like a heartbeat that belonged to both of us now instead of just one.

"Then we keep going," I said softly. "One full moon at a time, until there's nothing left of the curse to fight."

Elara's POVThe letter sat unopened on the table for a long moment, all of us simply staring at it like it might change shape if we looked away, and I found myself reaching for it slowly, my hands not quite steady as I finally broke the unfamiliar seal, pressed with an emblem I didn't recognize, a sun rising over waves."Read it aloud," Kael said quietly, his hand finding the small of my back, steady and grounding.I cleared my throat and began, the formal, careful language of the letter settling strange and heavy into the quiet library.*To Elara Ashwood, now Elara Draven, Queen of Nightfall Hollow. Word has reached our shores of the curse broken within your husband's bloodline, and of the manner in which it was achieved. This news, combined with certain details regarding your origins that have recently come to our attention, compels us to ask directly what we have wondered for over two decades. Are you the daughter of Marielle Sunhaven, who vanished from our kingdom before her arran

Elara's POVWe stayed in Ashwood territory for three more days, longer than I'd originally planned, though something about sitting with Alpha Cross through his slow decline felt important in a way I hadn't expected when Ryker's letter first arrived, less about him and more about giving myself the chance to close a door properly instead of leaving it hanging open the rest of my life."Do you think he'll recover," Kael asked quietly, the evening before we planned to return to Nightfall Hollow, both of us sitting on the small balcony outside the guest room the pack had prepared for us."I don't know," I admitted. "Nyra said guilt like that doesn't always resolve simply because someone finally speaks it aloud. Sometimes the body's already too worn down by the years of carrying it silently.""How do you feel about that possibility?"I considered the question honestly, turning it over before answering. "Strange. I thought I'd feel some kind of satisfaction, watching him face consequences af

Elara's POVI opened Ryker's letter in the quiet of the library, Kael reading through yet another diplomatic request beside me, and something in the careful, uneven handwriting told me before I'd even finished the first line that this wasn't simply another update on his father's cooperation with the northern packs."My father is dying. Not from illness, not from any attack, but from something the healers here can't explain, a weakness that's settled into him since the night he finally told the northern packs everything he knew. They say it looks like the wolf itself is losing its hold on him, faster than old age alone should account for. I don't know what this means, or whether it connects to anything you and Nyra might understand better than our own pack healers do, but I didn't know who else to ask.I read it twice, my stomach tightening with an unexpected complexity of feeling, because whatever cruelty Alpha Cross had shown me, whatever fear and ambition had driven decades of watc

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 48

Elara's POVWord of the curse breaking spread through Nightfall Hollow before the sun had even fully risen, servants and guards alike unable to contain their disbelief and joy once Nyra confirmed what she'd witnessed, and by midmorning, the castle had transformed into something I'd never quite seen before, genuine, unrestrained celebration replacing the careful, watchful tension that had lived in these halls for as long as I'd known them."A hundred years," Soren kept repeating throughout the morning, shaking his head like he still couldn't quite believe it himself, pulling Kael into a rough embrace that had nothing formal or careful about it at all. "A hundred years, and it took one omega from a small pack barely six months to undo what every healer and scholar in three kingdoms couldn't manage in a century.""She's not just an omega," Kael said, though there was no correction in his tone, only warmth, and pride, and something achingly soft as he looked at me across the room. "She's

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 47

Elara's POVNyra found me in the library on a bright, unremarkable afternoon, several weeks after Selene's sentencing had finally closed that long chapter of fear, and the careful, thoughtful expression on her face told me immediately that whatever she'd come to discuss carried real weight, even if the danger behind it had nothing to do with old enemies or ancient conspiracies."I want to examine the mark again," she said, settling into the chair across from mine. "Properly, now that things have quieted enough to actually study it without the pressure of an active threat clouding every observation. I've been curious for weeks whether the bond has changed since the wedding, now that the vows are fully sealed."I held out my wrist without hesitation, watching her turn it carefully in the afternoon light, tracing the familiar crescent moon and thorns with the same careful attention she'd shown that very first night in the cottage, though her expression this time carried curiosity rather

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 46

Elara's POVThe ride back to Nightfall Hollow felt entirely different from the tense journey north, the guards moving with visible relief despite the exhaustion carved into every face, Selene and her remaining followers bound and escorted at the center of our group, and though the danger that had shadowed us for weeks finally felt like it was loosening its grip, I found myself watching her carefully throughout the ride, unable to fully trust the quiet resignation she'd shown in the ruin."You keep looking back at her," Kael observed quietly, riding close beside me as the first real light of morning spread gold across the frosted fields."I keep waiting for it to feel finished," I admitted. "We caught her. She surrendered. And yet something in my chest still feels like it's bracing for one more thing to go wrong.""That's fair," he said. "We've been bracing for months. It doesn't simply stop because the danger has passed. Give it time, Elara. I imagine it'll take both of us a while to
