Evelyn

Darlene's mouth fell open. “What?”

“Your biological mother was another woman. Naomi raised you both, and she loved you.”

Pedro got to his feet. “You let us believe she gave birth to us our entire lives?”

“I was afraid of hurting you.”

Pedro shouted. “What the fuck is this, dad? What the fuck is this? You kept the truth from us, and now you expect us to absorb everything in one dinner?”

Darlene covered her mouth, while Pedro turned away and dragged a hand over his head.

“I need to leave,”

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Break Down

KendallThe following afternoon, I printed copies of the referral and the amended appointment record, put them in my bag, and drove to Isaac's hotel.I told myself I was going to give him the documents. I didn't need him to take me back. I wanted him to look at what I had found and tell me whether I was reading too much into it.When I arrived, the receptionist called his room. I waited near the entrance, watching the lift doors open and close. A few minutes later, Isaac walked into the lobby. He saw me immediately. His expression hardened. “Kendall.”“Can we talk?”“What did I tell you yesterday?”“I brought the documents I mentioned on the phone.”He looked at the folder in my hand but made no move to take it.“You're doing this again.”“Please, Isaac. Just look at them. I'm not asking you to reopen Paul's case. These records concern Evelyn's treatment, and Damien's name appears on a

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Let Me Go

EvelynDamien texted me every morning.Good morning, Evelyn. I hope you slept well.Have you eaten?Call me when you're ready. We need to talk.I read the messages in my hotel room, usually while sitting on the edge of the bed with a cup of tea going cold beside me. I had been there for several days, living out of a suitcase and trying to decide what to do with the life I had left behind.I hadn't answered most of his messages. I was still upset about what had happened between us, especially the moment he grabbed my wrist. He had apologised, but I couldn't erase the fear I'd felt when I looked at him and saw someone whose anger I hadn't known how to handle.Yet I missed him.Or maybe it was the company of him… I missed having someone to eat dinner with, someone to talk with, someone who made plans for the future... I also knew I couldn't go back to him simply because being alone was difficult. My phone

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    A Slip of Truth

KendallI called Evelyn to ask how it went with her father and siblings and just as I had expected, it was nothing to write home about… she was still staying around though, in some hotel. She needed some time. After we hung up, I returned to the box. I had chosen to keep busy with filtering through the excess of rubbish evidences I had gathered and finally declutter. It contained insurance statements, hospital bills, appointment cards, and copies of medical reports. I had helped Evelyn organise them after she left the Parker house. At the time, she had been overwhelmed, and I had put everything into one place so she could deal with it when she felt better. I found the blue folder beneath a pile of envelopes. The discharge summary was inside, along with several older referrals. I checked the dates against the insurance form, then noticed a folded sheet stuck between two pages. It was an appointment record from the fertility clinic.

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Deeper You Go

DorisI had covered half the kitchen table with hospital records by the time I finished my second cup of coffee. Every evening, I returned to the same pages, comparing dates and handwriting, hoping one of the discrepancies would finally make sense. The operating list bothered me most. Someone had written over a surgeon’s name, and the replacement entry had been made in different ink. Damien’s name appeared in the margin of Evelyn’s referral, though he wasn't listed as the doctor responsible for that appointment. Three days later, Evelyn’s test had been postponed. A nurse’s note recorded that her file had been requested that same afternoon. I had no proof Damien had interfered with anything. Still, his name kept appearing where it had no business being. My phone rang. It was the woman I knew in the hospital's records department. “Have you found anything else?” I asked. “I've checked the dates you gave me. The system shows an

She looked at Bruce with disgust, then glanced at me.“You should have told us, Evelyn.”She shook her head and followed Pedro out.I stayed long enough to collect my bag. Bruce stood beside the table, watching the doorway through which his children had disappeared.“Evelyn, please. Can we talk?”“I have nothing else to say tonight.”I was already done though…

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Bruce and Margaret

EvelynBruce had set the dining table with his good plates and prepared enough food for twice the number of people present. At seven, Darlene, Pedro, and I took our seats while he brought out the roast beef.“I’m happy you all came,” he said, settling into his chair. “It’s been a long time since we sat down together.”Pedro helped himself to the potatoes. “You called, Dad. We came.”Bruce looked at him, then turned to Darlene. “How is work? You haven’t told me much lately.”“Fine. Busy.”“You sound tired.”“I have a lot going on.”He nodded and turned to me. “And you, Evelyn? Are you still painting every day?”“When I have time.”“What are you working on?”“A portrait.”“Can I see it sometime?”“We’ll see.”Darlene put down her fork. “Must every conversation with Dad be this difficult?”I looked at her. “What have I done now?”“He asks you a simple question, and you answer him as though he’s disturbing you.”“I'm eating my dinner.”“You've been treating him this way for years,” Pedro
