I explained the situation as quickly as I could and they assured me they would be on their way.

That should have appeased Margaret, but she just kept screaming until a crowd of nurses formed around the staircase. Margaret fussed over her son, refusing to let anyone touch him or treat him. If I hadn’t done the first aid I did, he would be dead by now.

The police finally arrived after half an hour.

There were two detectives, both in their late thirties, and both male. Judging by their scents, they were human.

“We got a call from a Miss. Evangeline?”

“That’s me!” I said, stepping forward. “Thank goodness you’re here.”

“What happened ma’am?”

“What happened is that she tried to kill my son!” Margaret screamed. “Look at him. She has always wanted us dead.”

“I found him like that,” I cut in quickly. “He was barely breathing and bleeding from his head. I did my best to stop the bleeding. You can see the cotton pads on the floor and the bandage I was just about to wrap around his he
