“Amara, if you hear this, it means I already failed.”

The voice continued to echo through the sanctuary long after the words had ended.

I couldn't move.

My own voice.

My own warning.

But older.

Much older.

The girl beside me stared at the opening in the floor.

“Whatever comes through that door,” she whispered, “don't let it remember you.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

The floor cracked again.

This time, something moved beneath it.

A hand appeared through the darkness.

Human.

Small.

The question stayed in the air.But you still don't remember who gave you life.Nobody moved. Not my father. Not Evelyn. Not the First Witness. Not even the First Keeper. My grandfather stood beside the thing wearing his face, and for the first time, I understood that the man I had spent so long fearing was afraid too.His eyes weren't on me.They were on the creature behind him.“You weren't supposed to come through,” he whispered. The creature smiled using his face.“You opened the door.”My grandfather's expression hardened.“I opened nothing.”“You opened everything.”The creature's face changed. My grandfather disappeared. My father's face appeared. Then Evelyn's.Then mine. Finally, it settled on the face of a woman I had never seen before. She looked ordinary.Soft brown eyes.Dark hair.A calm smile.Yet the moment I saw her, something inside me screamed.I knew her.I just didn't know how.The First Witness took a step backward.“No.”I looked at her.“Who is she?”She didn't

The darkness did not disappear. It swallowed everything.Lena's hand was still wrapped around mine, but I could no longer see her. I could barely feel her. Even the sound of her breathing seemed to have been pulled away from me.Then the voice returned. You were never born.I closed my eyes.“Then what am I?”You were awakened. The words settled into me with a strange familiarity. Not because I believed them.Because somewhere deep inside, I had heard them before.A memory surfaced.A room.White walls.Silver light.A glass chamber standing in the center. And someone screaming my name.I opened my eyes. The corridor was gone.Lena was gone.I was standing inside the room from my memory. My room.Except it wasn't a memory anymore. It was happening around me.A glass chamber stood several feet away.Something was inside it.A baby.I stopped breathing. The baby opened her eyes. They were mine.“No.”The voice behind me whispered,“Yes.”I turned. The faceless being stood there.“What i

The moment I stepped through the opening, I forgot how to breathe. There was no transition. No feeling of falling. One second, I was standing beneath the two moons of the first world with Elyon's hand wrapped tightly around mine. The next, I was standing in the sanctuary. But it wasn't the sanctuary I remembered. The walls were covered in cracks. The ancient symbols had turned black. The candles that had once lined the stone floor were burning with silver flames, and every mirror in the room reflected something different. My father stood several feet away. The First Witness was beside him.Mara, Elias, Jonas, Selene, and Noah had returned with us.The Order leader was on the other side of the chamber. The First Keeper was staring at the ceiling. And Ethan and Lena—were nowhere to be seen.My heart dropped.“Where are they?”No one answered.I turned toward my father“Where are Ethan and Lena?”His expression changed.“They weren't with us when the portal closed.”“What does that mean

The darkness beneath the first world whispered my name again. Not Amara. Not Eve.Something older.Something I had forgotten so completely that hearing it felt less like remembering and more like being pulled toward a place I had once escaped. My knees nearly gave out.The boy beside me caught my hand.“Don't answer.”I looked at him.His black eyes were wide with fear.“You know what it is?”He nodded.“It remembers you.”The ground split farther.A deep crack raced across the silver field, cutting through the grass and disappearing beneath the distant glass towers. The two moons flickered.Once.Twice.Then one of them went dark.Everyone froze. The First Witness stared upward.“That shouldn't be possible.”“What is happening?”She didn't answer. The First Keeper did.“The first world is waking up.”My heart pounded.“I thought the first world was destroyed.”“It wasn't.”The Order leader looked at him sharply.“You said it was.”“I said that's what we believed.”The crack beneath u

Nobody moved. The shadows on the horizon continued to advance.Thousands of them. They moved together, but not like an army. There was no rhythm to their steps, no sound of marching feet, no voices calling commands. They simply came closer, sliding across the silver landscape as though distance itself meant nothing to them. The faceless beings had stopped watching me.Now they were watching the shadows. And they were afraid. That was when I understood something was terribly wrong. If the beings that existed before memory could be frightened, then whatever was coming had to be older than them. The First Witness whispered my name.“Amara.”I looked at her.“What are they?”Her lips parted, but no answer came. The First Keeper answered instead.“They are the reason the first world ended.”My chest tightened.“You said humans ended it.”“We thought we did.”The Order leader stared at the approaching darkness.“You never told us about them.”The First Keeper looked at her.“Because I didn'
