Nyra moved around her tiny apartment, the silence crushing down on her with the same oppressive weight she had experienced while Ryker was there. Her mind continued to hear his words, always reminding her that the road she was on was not as pure or easy as it first looked.

"Should he shut you out, don't come crawling back to the pack house."

Long after Ryker departed, the words had haunted her, hanging in the air like smoke. She could still sense his warmth, the way his rage had seeped into the space and threatened to burn everything in its path.

She was through with him, nevertheless. Completed with the pack. Through with serving another person's game. She had made up her mind. She simply questioned whether it was the correct one.

A quiet knock at the door broke her thinking. Before she even had time to process it, her heart skipped in her chest. Before she even opened the door, she knew who it was.

Standing there, Kael's eyes locked with hers without thinking, his posture as disciplined and natural as always. At first he said nothing, just observed her with that soft concentration as if he could sense every idea going through her mind.

"Do you mind if I come in?" he inquired, his voice a peaceful contrast to the storm brewing within her.

Nyra moved aside to let him in without saying anything. She could not afford to let him see how anxious she was.

Walking past her and into the living room, Kael's gaze briefly searched the small area before he turned to face her.

“I knew you would decide,” he said in a hushed and measured tone.

"Did you?" Nyra said, her voice harsher than she intended it to be. She crossed her arms and rested against the wall, trying to look unconcerned. “And what if I didn't? What if I made up my mind to leave?

Kael's lips turned into that small, knowing grin she had grown so familiar with. It was the grin of a man who knew he had already won, whether she loved it or not; it wasn't a smile of affection.

"You will not. Not now."

Nyra's pulse sped up as her breathing caught. Her unease came from his assured voice. She knew Kael could control her with no question at all. The query, though, was whether she could let herself be played, or if she could find a means to use him as much as he meant to use her.

"Let's get one thing straight." Nyra said, her voice strong as she reached for a glass of water toward the kitchen counter. “I am not working for you. This is not about your desires. It's about me reclaiming what was mine."

Kael never stopped looking at her; his face was unreadable.

"I know," he just said. “I'm not asking you to assist me. I'm want you to do it for yourself. But you need someone who matches your ambition if you want to regain charge of your life. Someone willing to go above and beyond to assist you reach."

She took a small sip of water, meeting his eyes as she set the glass down.

"And you believe that is you?"

Kael did not answer right away. Rather, he moved closer, his presence filling the area between them.

"Do you believe you can win this fight by yourself?" His voice turned low and menacing. “You believe you can single-handedly combat Ryker, the pack, and every other enemy in this city?”

The words resonated more powerfully than she had hoped. Kael was right on. She had been working to win this struggle on her own ever since Ryker turned her down, but the truth was she was out of her depth. She needed assistance. She needed someone to look past her present suffering and lead her where she had to go.

“I’m not weak.” She said defiantly, her voice charged with assurance.

"I never claimed you were,” Kael answered. His voice changed, nearly invisibly. “But strength is about more than just fighting. It's about knowing when to let go of your pride and embrace what is directly before you."

She hesitated to answer right away. She resisted admitting how near to the truth he was, how much she disliked the concept of depending on anybody—especially Kael. She could not get past the truth, though, that everything he had given her was what she needed to recover her life, to get back the power she had lost.

Kael stared at her for a little longer, his eyes fixed.

"You have already taken the initial step, Nyra. You have agreed to my offer."

"I've agreed to the contract." She corrected him. "Not you".

Kael grinned once more, but it was different this time. It lacked any arrogance or secret plan. It was practically insight.

"I am the contract, Nyra. The one who will see this through is me.

She retreated, the weight of his words settling in. The truth of the matter fell over her like a thick cloak. She was attaching herself to him, to a power she hardly grasped yet, not just joining a commercial arrangement. A power she was not confident she could manage.

“You’re right about one thing.” She said, her voice hardly a whisper. "I have no options. Not now."

Kael's gaze changed into something more menacing.

"You've always had options. You chose wisely, though."

She stared at him, a weird blend of caution and something else whirling within her breast. Something too much like fear but also something more like anticipation.

"We start tomorrow," Kael remarked, his voice quiet but determined. "Nyra, you will be in my world now. I also won't let you fall."

She nodded once, working to control the swirl of feelings within. Not only terror. She came to see her life was changing in ways she had not intended. She had been fleeing from this moment for so long, but now that it had come she wondered if she was ready.

Kael was correct about one thing: no going back. Her inquiry was how much of herself she would have to give up to get what he was giving.

Nyra stayed awake in bed that evening, gazing at the ceiling, the weight of the decision weighing more heavily on her bones. She had decided freedom over control, strength over peace. She had decided on Kael. But she had to face the fallout now and she had to determine whether she could really trust him or whether he would be just another person to use her, to throw her aside when she was no longer useful.

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER FOUR

Three weeks Nyra had been listening to the pipes in Kael's house's west wing rattle, waiting for the other shoe to fall. Kael had not troubled her. Actually, she only saw him at breakfast, when he mostly read legal documents on his tablet and sipped black coffee without looking at her. It felt like a strange, quiet business residency, not a great, gloomy love story. But the peace was a lie, and they both knew it. Ryker was not one to let a past partner simply enter a competitor's property without causing a disturbance. The scene began on a Tuesday evening just as a violent thunderstorm was knocking the lights off. The knock on her ground-floor balcony door wasn't a soft touch. The glass pane trembled from a strong, steady thump. Nyra let her book fall on the bed, her throat drying right away. Though the storm was strong enough to silence a military, Kael's security squad was meant to be monitoring the perimeter.

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER THREE

Nyra found it hard to believe what was going on. With a weight upon her back, she felt as if she was jogging across sand; the days and hours were flying by ever more quickly. She had to decide something. She couldn't keep procrastinating it. Her mind kept bringing back the image of Kael in all his towering, self-assured height, standing confidently and declaring himself to her as something which he obviously was – the center of power and control in any room he entered. She also couldn't get out of her head the offer he had given her. At night, she spent hours gazing out her window. The far-off city's lights were vibrant and strong. The air in her tiny apartment made her feel suffocated. She was still undecided on whether she should take Kael's offer. Nyra understood he would not wait for too long for her to decide, even if he was not pushing her for an response. If she didn't say yes quickly, the door to

Nyra stood frozen, trying to withstand Kael's glare while ignoring the growing anxiety in her gut. The tension between them was a thick, palpable thing. Kael offered her a deal, then fell quiet. She couldn't decide if the silence was worse than the offer itself. Nyra averted her gaze, focusing on the ground. “I am not interested,” she finally said. She was impressed by how level her voice was. She had imagined that her rejection would feel more substantial, but it felt emptier. Kael did not respond, not a blink, just an unhurried step forward. “You will be," he said. Nyra felt her lungs freeze. Kael had a dispassionate tone, but his words were gratingly certain, and maddeningly infuriating. She felt her resolve slip away. She quickly took a step back, and the frigid night air contrasted painfully with the heat in her chest. “You know nothing about me. You’re assuming a lot.” Kael kept his cool gaze locked on

  • Rejected by my Mate, Claimed by His Rival   CHAPTER ONE

“I, Alpha Ryker, reject you, Nyra Vale, as my soulmate." The rumbles of destruction never came. This was the unwinding of a great monster. A thread by thread destruction. Reality became blurry and everything became quiet. The air was slowly disappearing, and for a moment it seemed like the room was entangled in this time-stopping silence. The world returned, but not the same. A sleeve brushed against the chair. Or maybe it was the chair rubbing against its leg. A hesitant hand was out. Like the release of a brake, it began. Rapid, but quiet. Nyra remained still, the world moving around her. She wished the ceiling wasn't so bright. She wished everything wasn't on the light, but instead focused on her. She felt like she was put on display. In the dimmed lights, the judging eyes began to haunt her. The lights touched her the most, giving no room for escape, for avoidance. The world was a blurred mass of moving faces, glances, a
