Elara’s POV

I woke to the sound of a soft knock on my bedroom door.

“Miss Elara?” Miriam’s voice came from the other side. “Lord Kaden is waiting for you in his study.”

I sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. The room still felt unfamiliar despite how comfortable the bed had been. For a second, I forgot where I was. Then everything came rushing back, Kaden, the estate, the deal I’d made.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” I called.

After washing up and changing into a simple outfit Miriam had le

  • Rejected not broken   Chapter eleven

Elara’s POV The ride to Adelaide’s house felt longer than I remembered probably because my mind refused to stay quiet. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw ice blue eyes staring back at me. “Come back.” I sighed and leaned my head against the window. Why did those two words refuse to leave me alone? The driver slowed in front of a familiar street and my heart settled instantly. Home, well… the closest to one I’d ever had, before the driver could open my door, it flew open from the outside. “Elara!” Adelaide practically launched herself at me. I barely had time to step out before her arms wrapped tightly around me. “You idiot!” she cried, squeezing me even tighter. “Do you have any idea how worried I was?” “I missed you too,” I laughed, hugging her back. She pulled away just enough to smack my arm. “That wasn’t funny.” “It kind of was.” She glared, I smiled. Heavens… I’d missed her. “So,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “How’s the mysterious vampire?” Heat rushed to my fac

  • Rejected not broken   Chapter ten

Elara’s POV The first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting soft golden streaks across the guest room. I yawned but I had been awake long before dawn. Sleep came in restless fragments, each one interrupted by the memory of Kaden’s hand against my cheek, the warmth in his icy blue eyes, the way he’d leaned in until I could feel his breath. Then he’d stopped. I groaned and buried my face in the pillow willing myself to forget it, that It hadn’t happened. I wasn’t here to lose myself in stolen moments with a vampire who had opened his home to a broken stranger. I had a purpose. A promise to keep. Pushing myself out of bed, I folded the borrowed clothes I’d worn over the past few days and packed the few belongings I owned into my small bag. Today, I was leaving, Adelaide would already be waiting and once I got back everything would change. The mansion was unusually quiet with only the distant clink of dishes and the occasional footsteps of servants echoed through

  • Rejected not broken   Chapter nine

Elara’s POV. The next morning marked exactly two weeks since I had stepped foot in Kaden’s home. Two weeks since I’d arrived bruised, broken and burning with nothing but revenge. Now… I was still burning only this time, I knew how to control the fire. My muscles screamed as I drove my fist toward Kaden. He caught my wrist. I twisted beneath his grip, swept his legs and shoved him backward. He stumbled a few steps before regaining his balance. Progress. A week ago I wouldn’t have managed even that, a proud smile tugged at his lips. “Better.” I pressed a hand to my chest dramatically. “Was that… a compliment?” “It was an observation.” “So you admit I’m improving.” “I admit you’re becoming slightly less terrible.” I gasped, “Luna!” I called toward the porch. “Did you hear that? Your guardian just insulted me.” Luna giggled around a mouthful of bread swinging her legs as she did, “He likes you.” She sang. Kaden nearly choked, “I tolerate her.” He murmured“Su

Elara’s POV Three days, three days was all it took for Kaden and me to disagree about almost everything. “You were late.” I glanced at the sun. “By five minutes.” “You were late.” “It’s five minutes.” “It only takes five minutes to lose a fight.” I sighed dramatically. “It must be exhausting being you.” “No.” “It must be exhausting being around you.” Kaden didn’t even blink. “Stretch.” I rolled my eyes but did as he said. “This is exactly what I mean.” “What?” “You don’t know how to have a normal conversation.” “I do.” I looked at him expectantly. He looked back. “…Well?” “I’ve already had one.” I stared at him for a second before laughing in disbelief “You’re unbelievable.” “So I’ve heard.” I muttered something under my breath as I bent to touch my toes. “What was that?” “I said you’re very… dedicated.” “You lied.” “I did.” He nodded like he didn’t want this to continue “I know.” I couldn’t help smiling “You know, most pe

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, lighting polished marble floors and paintings that looked older than anything I’d ever seen. We stopped outside a pair of dark wooden doors.Miriam knocked once, just once while leaning her ear to the door “My lord, Miss Elara is here.”“Come in.” His voice was calm as ever.Miriam pushed the door open and stepped aside for me.Kaden sat b

  • Rejected not broken   Chapter six

Elara’s POV The morning air carried the crisp scent of dew as I stepped onto the front porch with a single duffel bag slung over her shoulder. For the first time in weeks, I wasn’t running from something. I was walking towards it, willingly. Behind me, the front door creaked open. “You don’t have to look so miserable,” Adelaide teased, leaning against the doorframe with her arms folded. “You’re acting like Kaden is taking you to your execution.” I forced a smile. “Who says he isn’t?” Adelaide laughed, the sound warm enough to ease some of the tightness in my chest. “If he wanted you dead, he wouldn’t have agreed to help you.” “That isn’t exactly comforting.” “No?” Adelaide arched a brow. “Trust me, that’s practically a declaration of affection coming from him.” “I still don’t understand why he agreed” I frowned. “You don’t need to.” “I think I do.” Adelaide’s expression softened. “Some people don’t explain themselves until they’re ready.” Before I could ask a
