Athena's POV

I asked Emelia to leave twenty minutes ago.

She gave me that look she always gives me when she thinks I am making a decision that will cost me something. Her eyes stayed on mine for a few seconds, as if she were trying to find a way to change my mind without saying the words.

She knows me well enough to understand that once I have made a decision, arguing will not change it.

So she left.

I told her to leave Augustus alone in the room, and she did.

Now I am standing farther down the

Dimitri's POV Days begin to pass after Athena leaves. At first, I tell myself I will get used to it.The pack returns to its usual routine. But I can feel the shift in them after Athena has left... as if the sun that rises in my pack is constantly covered with shadows.Life is going on.Patrols continue.Training continues.Meetings fill the hours. The threat from the mutts grows with every report that reaches Blackridge, and my attention is divided between protecting the territory and keeping track of everything happening along our borders. But there is one part of my day that does not change.I go to see Augustus.Usually at night.I choose that time because I know he needs me then.He is still young enough to need someone beside him when the day ends. I learned it myself during the week he stayed in Blackridge.I learned the way he settles when I hold him close.I learned the sounds he makes when he is tired.I learned how his little hand searches for something familiar when sleep

  • Rejecting My Alpha   Chapter 37

Athena's POVThe morning arrives before I am ready for it.I wake early, the way I always do.For a few seconds, I lie still and listen to the quiet room. Augustus is sleeping beside me, curled beneath his blanket with one hand near his face. His breathing is soft, and his little body barely moves except for the occasional shift of his fingers.I turn my head toward him and watch him for a moment.Today, we leave.Everything that needs to be packed is already packed. I finished it last night because I do not leave things half done. Our clothes are folded, Augustus's things are secured, and the bags are ready to be carried downstairs. There is nothing left to organize.I slip from bed and begin getting ready.By the time Augustus wakes, I am already dressed. He blinks up at me sleepily when I lean over him."Good morning, sleepyhead."His little face scrunches before his eyes open properly. He reaches toward me, and I pick him up.He settles against my chest while I feed him. Once he i

  • Rejecting My Alpha   Chapter 36

Athena's POVEmelia tells me Dimitri is with Augustus when I finish the session.I nod and thank her, then walk toward the guest room without rushing. Augustus is safe. I know he is safe, and right now, I trust that much. I trust the fact that my son is being cared for. I trust the instinct that tells me he is fine. There are other things I still struggle to trust, things that have nothing to do with Augustus and everything to do with the man who shares his blood. For now, I leave those thoughts where they are.The door is open when I reach the guest room.I stop in the doorway.Dimitri is sitting on the floor beside Augustus, cross-legged on the blanket. His large frame takes up a surprising amount of space, yet he has arranged himself with an unusual care, his movements quiet and restrained in the small room. He has learned that Augustus is easily startled by sudden movements. He has learned to move around him with patience, giving him time to see and understand what is happening.A

  • Rejecting My Alpha   Chapter 35

Dimitri's POV"Augustus is awake."Emelia knocks once before opening the door to my office. I look up from the file in front of me and find her standing in the doorway."Athena is still in the training session," she says. "He is fed and changed, but he is fussing. I need to call Luna, but I can't leave him alone."I close the file."I will be there."Something moves across her face.It seems closer to relief. She gives me a small nod."Yes, Alpha."Then she steps away from the doorway.I rise from my chair and follow her into the corridor. The moment we begin walking, I hear him.Augustus is not crying. Not yet.He is making those particular sounds he makes when he has decided the current situation is failing to meet his standards. There is a certain quality to his fussing that I have started recognizing. I can already tell the difference between his distressed cries and these smaller complaints.I almost find myself smiling.Almost.The thought catches me off guard.I have been learn

Her eyes stayed on mine for a few seconds, as if she were trying to find a way to change my mind without saying the words. She knows me well enough to understand that once I have made a decision, arguing will not change it.So she left.I told her to leave Augustus alone in the room, and she did.Now I am standing farther down the corridor, tucked into the shadow between two door frames, far enough from his room that Dimitri will not see me when he passes. And he will pass.I know he will come.Augustus's cries carry through the entire floor. They are loud enough to reach every corner of the corridor, each one more distressed than the last. There is something different about this cry. I know every sound my son makes. I know the difference between hunger and tiredness, between frustration and wanting attention, between th

  • Rejecting My Alpha   Chapter 33

Dimitri's POVI do not follow Athena.Every instinct in me tells me to go after her, to stop her before she disappears into the training field, to find some way to make her listen to me again.I stay where I am.She has every reason to walk away from me.I hurt her. I broke the trust she gave me so completely that she no longer carries anything for me. I understand that forgiveness will not come because I ask for it. It will take time, perhaps more time than I know how to give. But I still cannot understand why my answer felt like a lie. When I told her I want her to give us another chance, I meant it.Yet the moment the words left my mouth, they sounded hollow. Why?Why was that answer not enough? Why did something inside me resist the idea that the only place I could have in her life was as Augustus's father?I stare at the path long after she leaves. My wolf is agitated, pacing beneath my skin, wanting me to follow her. Wanting me to close the distance between us.I understand him.
