I woke up to the soft glow of the sun coming in through the hotel curtains, I stretched lazily over the bed. Last night had been something else, the smell of sweat and sex still lingered in the room.

I reached for her but…. She wasn’t there.

The space next to me was cold and empty.

My eyes blinked open, I scanned the bed and the room, no clothes on the floor. No sound in the bathroom.

She was gone.

A sharp exhale escaped my lips as I sat up, I ran my hand through my sex scattered hair. I should have seen it coming, she had that air about her like she didn’t want to be held down, she just wanted to enjoy herself but she still got my attention.

It pissed me off that I hadn’t even gotten her name.

The only thing I had was the memory of last night imprinted in my head, her body beneath mine, the way she responded and how she’d taken everything I gave like she was starved, like she needed it just as badly as I did.

Shit!

I’m not the kind of guy who gets hung up on a one-night stand. I never had been. But damn, there was something different about this girl.

And now, she was gone.

That’s alright. It’s fine.

I just need to find her, at the very least put a name to the face that won't leave my head.

I got out of bed, showered, dressed and headed back to the club.

***

The club was a lot different in the daytime, it was almost unrecognizable from last night. A few people were cleaning up and preparing for the night’s repeat of recklessness.

My eyes scanned the room, the bartender from last night wasn’t behind the counter. Disappointment twisted in my stomach.

I leaned in and caught the attention of a woman polishing glasses.

“Hey, where’s the guy who was working last night?”

She sighed, looking more exhausted than interested. “He’s off shift.”

“Can I get his number?”

She scoffed. “We don’t give out employee info.”

I clenched my jaw, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a crisp hundred dollar bill and slid it across the bar. “Now can you give me his number?”

She hesitated for just a second, then took the money and stuffed it in her apron. “He didn’t do nothing right?”

I shook my head.

“Ask the boss.” She pointed towards an office.

A few minutes later, I had the number and it only cost me a couple more hundred dollar bills. I stepped outside and dialed the number.

The phone rang twice before a sleepy uninterested voice answered.

“Yeah?”

“Hello. I’m looking for a woman from last night. She wore a black dress and was drinking double vodka sodas and long islands. Remember?”

There was a pause.

“Yeah… yeah. She was there, but she drank and she left with this high-class guy.”

My fingers tightened around the phone. “I’m the high-class guy, do you know the lady? Or remember anything at all about her? Her name from the payment.”

“Nah. I’m sorry, dude.”

The call ended.

For the first time in a very long time. I felt like I’d lost something. I didn’t like the feeling.

I shoved the phone back into my pocket and walked away.

Back at the hotel, I poured myself a drink and sank into the couch.

I know I should let it go but my mind kept circling back to her.

The buzz on my phone brought me back to reality. I glanced at the caller ID, and the name spoilt my entire mood.

Samantha.

I sighed, and picked up the call. “What?”

“You don’t have to sound so grim.” She shot at me, her voice soft with a fake sweetness. “I was just calling to check in on you.”

“We’re not together anymore,” I reminded her. “You don’t need to check in.”

“Come on, Ethan, we were engaged…”

“Were. Past tense.” I replied in a sharp and final tone. “Whatever this is, just drop it.”

There was silence but I heard her sigh. “Fine but don’t act like I don’t matter to you.”

I ended the call.

She didn’t matter, not anymore.

But the girl from last night? She mattered more than she should.

“Do your worst Ethan, I’m not scared of you”. I bluffed, my lips curled up in a smirk, with my jaw stiffened as we stood side by side. “Oh really?” He chuckled dryly. “You should know me by now, that I don’t carelessly throw my words around”. “We shall see about that”. He muttered, a snarling smile spread across his face as he turned carefully on his heel. “When will this enmity between you both stop?”“I don’t know what I have done to deserve this”. My mother wailed, throwing herself to the sofa in despair. “Bring it on Ethan, I dare you”. I fired at him, grunting and pacing angrily, my steps tracing a straight path. Just as Ethan was approaching the entrance to head out of the house, Ashley walked in. She paused her movement abruptly upon seeing Ethan, her eyes roaming all over him in shock, with her mouth aghast as she watched Ethan leave. “I blame you”, my mother faced my father, tears tickled from the corner of her eye socket. “You blame me? What have I done

“What?”My words got caught in my throat, my feet transfixed to the spot as I watched Emilia walk out on me. Shock washed over me like iced waves at the sight of how bold she had become. From the moment she pointed a knife in my face the other day, I should have known she had grown wings. What changed? What gave her the nerves to flout my instructions? Definitely, she had something up her sleeves. My eyes darkened with evil, my mind sketching and searching for answers. Ethan must have brainwashed her into this. I stood still watching, till her presence faded into the shadows. “Tch Tch,” I clicked my tongue against my teeth, my toes voluntarily stomping the ground. “I will get you, marry you, get my inheritance and divorce your silly ass”. My lips curled in a smirk as I muttered beneath my breath, my blood boiling hot with desperation. Just as I turned my heel towards the stairs to go get a bottle of Jameson’s Whiskey, the maid appeared at the edge of the stairs

“Welcome to Vida Café” The doorman pushed open the door, gesturing for me to enter, his face etched with a welcoming smile as he greeted. As I walked in, a sense of unease settled in my chest, a dull ache that lingered. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the lavender scents, did little to calm the unsettling feeling that pulsed my nerves. Was it the guilt of how Emilia will take the news that I was pregnant with Lucas’s child?Or was it about how the family dynamics would change? I couldn’t pinpoint what exactly it was, but this unsettling feeling wore heavy on my shoulders like a truckload. I suddenly paused my steps in the middle of the café, eyes shut tightly as moments with Lucas flooded my imaginations, silencing the wave of unease that had caged my mind.My excitement returned, eyes snapped open with a malicious grin spread across my face.Lucas is the man of dreams. The man I want to wake up to every morning. “Lucas is mine”, I muttered beneath my breath, my t

On getting back downstairs, my head began to spin, a wave of dizziness enveloped me. I leaned against the wooden banister to steady myself from falling.I needed to get to the pharmacy next minute, but in this state, driving myself there was far from being an option. I grudgingly swiped open my purse zipper, to get my phone to book a taxi. “Cling cling”, my phone chimed, my patience wearing thin with every second it took before the taxi driver picked. “Hello ma’am, where……”“Rite Aid Pharmacy, Wilshire Boulevard”. I impatiently cut in, stopping the driver’s words. “Oh, alright, will be there in 2 minutes.”I was already walking towards the entrance when the call ended. As I was about to take the final step out of the house, a voice called out from a distance, which halted my movement. “Ashley!”My mother yelled. “Shitt”, I froze, anxiety pulsating my veins. “Not now please”, I stood still shutting my eyelids, my brows furrowed in a scowl. “Ashley!”She calle

I swiveled my chair around, my gaze met with Donald’s elated face, a bright smile screeching from his eyes, revealing his sparse and irregular dentition.“You know you’re one of my efficient and loyal staff”. I cooed, my right index finger pointed at him in satisfaction, an impressive grin worn on my face. Donald stood still, his arms swung behind him, folded and pressed against the center of his lower back, just above the hip, his head nodding in agreement. “Despite the recent happenings here at the office, you’ve stayed true to me.”I continued, my elbows resting on the armrest of my chair, my hands upright with my fingers intertwined as I acknowledged his commitment. “You just got yourself a salary raise, which will be made effective by the end of this month”. “Oh my goodness”, Donald’s hand flung to his face, his mouth covered in his palm in surprise. “Thank you so much Sir”. “Thank you”, he uttered, appreciating my kind gesture.“You may leave now”, I instructed,

“Yes? Why are you blowing up my phone?” “Why the fuck are you calling me?” I snorted, my face twisted in a scowl, my brows furrowed. “Ma’am, I haven’t gotten any feedback from you since the operation was executed”. Ryder uttered, his tone low and husky. “You idiot”. I spat, my voice rising. “You had just one…” I paused, my eyes glanced through the kitchen, just to be sure no one was eavesdropping. “You had just one job Ryder”, I whispered, holding my phone really close my mouth. “Just to get rid of him and you screwed it up Ryder”. I stopped my words, then walked towards the door that led into the kitchen. I peeped my head out of the door, my eyes making a quick glance at the living room. Then I stepped back into the kitchen. “You’re fully aware that it’s because you came highly recommended.” “That’s why I hired you for this job”. “But you disappointed me, dimwit”. I smirked, my face glammed with disgust. “How do you mean ma’am” He asked, his v
