Astra’s POV

“Oh!” Kate screams loud, almost blocking my eardrums. “Can't you see how handsome he is?” She gushes as a group of boys walk past.

I don't but refrain from telling her that.

“Are you coming to the game tonight?”

To watch her swoon and gush over the captain of the lacrosse team? No, I will pass.

My phone beeps and I groan as I read the message.

Do I have to come over there before I see you ?

I don't want to talk to my mother.

I'm busy, mum. I send back.

I turn to Kate. “I will be at the game.”

She pulls me into a tight hug, almost crushing my ribs. “Thank you, Astra. The game won't be fun without you.”

That is a lie. She barely registers my existence. All she does is scream Nathan's name and fill my ears on the way home about how she wishes to run into Nathan.

The stadium buzzes with cheers from hundreds of students celebrating the end of the semester exams and there to support Northcrest University. Music thrums from the speakers but the shouts bury the impact. It's the final game for the year and to say the crowd is crazy is an understatement.

Kate's voice is getting hoarse but that isn't strange to me. I can always make her the herbal soothing tea as I do.

“Here he is.” She vigorously taps me as the lacrosse team from our school walk in.

“I can see him.” I say blandly, thinking of how to avoid going home for the third holiday since I left home.

“Nathan, I love you.” Kate bellows shamelessly and I wince on her behalf.

Nathan Reed.

Captain of the Northcrest Jaguars.

Campus most eligible bachelor.

The boyfriend in many fantasies.

An already signed future professional lacrosse star.

There is no way he will choose girls like Kate or me but I refuse to tell her the truth. She is free to dream.

The noise keeps getting louder and affecting me. I decide to excuse myself. I pull Kate’s sleeve to tell her but she barely notices, busy drilling holes into Nathan with her gaze.

The crowd goes wild as Nathan scores and I fall on my ass, pushed by an overexcited fan.

“Shit,” I curse as pain travels through me, followed by a vision I would rather not have had.

Nathan dressed in a black suit. I'm dressed in a white gown and walking down the aisle to him, both of us smiling at each other as if no one else matters.

I shoot up from the ground with an intensity that makes me dizzy.

Nathan? My future husband?

I scoff. That is the most ridiculous vision I've ever seen since I learnt of my powers two years after birth.

I've been staying too close to Kate that her fantasies have corrupted my mind. That has to be it.

I walk, rushing to the restroom to splash some water on my face. My subconscious mocks, reminding me that my visions always come to pass.

This better not come to pass. I will face Kate's wrath and that of many girls on campus who dream every night of saying ‘I do’ to Nathan.

I left home to escape the drama, and didn't come to college to drown myself in unnecessary drama.

I splash more water on my face and groan as another vision hijacks my brain.

Nathan shifting into a werewolf with thick black fur. He stands on a mountain and howls as he gazes at the red moon. His eyes are filled with hate and the aura from him is as intimidating as it is attractive.

I'm nowhere to be found in that vision but realize the implication. Only an alpha werewolf has that fur he has and commands such presence.

And that is everything Nathan Reed isn't.

Werewolf?

Being a witch and the descendant of Ghoka, the goddess of war, I know a werewolf when I see one. And Nathan is not one, much more an alpha.

I start laughing as I snap back to reality, wondering why I am having weird visions. Maybe I shouldn't have eaten the weird dinner Kate made. I should have told her that she was a bad cook instead of shoving the abomination down my throat.

It must have tampered with my powers.

I stamp down the voice in my head, trying to give a reminder I didn't ask for.

“Are you fine?” One of the girls in the restroom asks, peering at me.

Her question is funny and I laugh more. Is there any time that I'm fine?

The last time I was probably fine was before my mother named me Astra after the stars as a joke because there was nothing beautiful about her life when she had me.

She sighs and moves away, obviously not wanting to get infected with the virus making me misbehave.

“Where were you?” Kate sighs when I join her. “You missed the fun. Nathan has scored two more goals.”

I roll my eyes, careful not to let her see me. Of course, it's about Nathan. She doesn't miss a chance to purr about him. I doubt Nathan's mum is as proud of her son as Kate is as of him.

“Look at those muscles.” She says, turning my head to look at Nathan. “Look at that black hair clinging to his head. I ache to run my hands through it.”

“He looks sweaty and so does the hair. I bet your hands will smell when you touch it.”

She gives me a murderous glare. “You have no romantic bone in you. I wonder if you will ever get married.”

How unfortunate of her to say that as the vision of walking down the aisle to Nathan springs in my heart.

As if he knows I'm watching or rather being forced to watch, he turns his head and I gasp as our eyes meet and I'm sucked into another vision.

Nathan lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood, half-man and half-wolf. I'm kneeling by his side and crying for help while a strange man laughs and tells me that I should have protected him.

He glances away and the spell is broken.

“Are you okay?” Kate narrows her eyes at me in concern. “You are sweating.”

On an open field?

“Yes, I'm fine.” I nod, my voice sounding strange to my ears.

What was that about? Nathan is a werewolf and my mate, and I'm meant to protect him?

I don't understand anything.

I glance at Nathan but he is focused on the game.

“We won!” Kate yells, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Let's go home, Astra.”

Home?

She is right.

I take out my phone and send a quick text to my mum, letting her know that I will be home for the holiday.

I need to know if going crazy is one of the effects of refusing to acknowledge my powers all these years.

Her call comes in immediately.

“Astra, are you really coming home?” She says the moment I pick.

If she is excited or surprised I finally agreed to be home, she doesn't let it show.

“Yes.” I try not to think much of it and regret my decision so soon.

“Why?”

Trust her to doubt my intentions.

Because of a boy showing up too much in my visions far more than I like?

Because I'm going crazy and can't understand my visions?

I can't let her know those reasons so I lie. “Because I miss you.” I cringe at the words.

She snorts. “Let me know when you are on your way home.” She says and ends the call.

I sigh and wonder if my vision is worth the risk of going home to see my mum. The vision of Nathan dying creeps into my mind and I shudder, wondering how the hell I'm meant to protect him when I barely know him.
