ELEANOR
It was time for the engagement dinner, and we were currently in the grand dining hall of the Blackwell’s estate. The place was a show of luxury. Every piece looked like it cost millions of dollars, and it made me go back to my discussion with Isla. I guess I could consider myself lucky. I was sitting beside Theon, my fingers curled tightly around my glass as I forced a smile on my face while pretending that Theon’s cold behaviour wasn’t getting to me. He had been distant ever since I walked through the door and while this cold demeanor was nothing new, I had expected him to be a bit warmer since the night was for us. I know some people would say Theon didn’t love me since he wasn’t very vocal about his feelings, but I had learnt to read the unspoken language of his subtle gestures. His love for me was present in the way his hand rested on the back of my chair anytime I sat close to him or how he always positioned himself between me and anything that would cause me the slightest unease. He would buy me gifts, especially things I wanted without me asking. He always shows up for events I host or attend even if I don’t ask. There were so many signs that he didn’t need to say the words but today, he felt farther. Theon Blackwell was an enigma, even to those closest to him. He was ruthless in business just as Isla had proclaimed, he was emotionally detached and always unreadable, but I knew underneath the cold exterior, there was something real. Something he felt for me that made him propose and want to spend the rest of his life with me. My father, Aiden Sterling, stood up, pulling all attention to him as he raised his glass. My father was a man of authority and his years of being the head of the Sterling Enterprise gave him an air of effortless command. “To my beautiful daughter, Eleanor Sterling,” he began, his eyes and voice filled with pride “And to Theon, a man who has proven himself formidable, not just in business but in love” Father let his words hand in the air for a moment, as if waiting for the room to digest it before continuing “May this union strengthen not only our families but also the unbreakable bond between them. A toast to the future Mr and Mrs Blackwell” Glasses clinked and murmurs of approval rippled through the guests, bringing a smile to my face. I turned to Theon, and he had a small smile on his face as he held his glass for me to clink. The small hurt I felt disappeared as I clinked my glass with his and gave him a kiss on the cheeks much to the merriment of people present. Theon's eyes shone with amusement, but he said nothing and took a sip of his drink instead. “Come on, Elle. Give us a speech” Someone hollered from the crowd, and I flushed as others joined in and soon the room was filled with guests chanting for a speech from me. “Come on, Elle. Don’t be shy” Isla urged playfully. I was no longer mad at her, so I rolled my eyes playfully and got to my feet as cheers rose. My speech however was cut off by a chime. Then another. Then an avalanche of notifications. The room was drowned with the buzz of phones vibrating across the room. I turned to Isla who had a confused expression on her face as she answered my unspoken question with a clueless shrug. A tense silence fell over the room as the guest glanced down at their ringing tone. Gasps soon followed as hands flew to mouths and eyes wide with horrors and disgust turned to me. My heart pounded as cold dread slithered through my veins. I hesitated but reached for my phone with trembling hands. A horrified gasp escaped my throat as I saw the message that I was sure everyone else had received. Photos of me stared back at me. I was in a supposed dimly lit room with a man. His face had been blurred out, but the position suggested we had a thing. The next messages were screenshots of emails with financial transactions, confidential reports and messages that suggested that I sold Theon’s company secrets to a competitor. My head snapped up to meet the judgmental gazes of the guests. “No” I whispered and shook my head, barely able to process the words “This isn’t true. “It isn’t real” my voice came out stronger. “I always knew you were too good to be true” A sharp voice sneered, and my gaze met Victoria Blackwell, Theon’s stepmother as she stood up. “You are nothing more than a social-climbing snake” My stomach churned as whispers followed her accusations. “I knew she was a pretender” One of the guests muttered. “She was using Theon all along. She is such a snake” another one added. “So, Eleanor is a fraud?” I turned to Theon, my wide eyes brimming with tears, pleading for him to say something, anything that would suggest he believed in me and not these fake messages. “Theon,” I choked out “You know me, I would never...” Victoria slammed her hands on the table, causing the plates and glass to tremble from the impact “How dare you sit there and pretend to be innocent?” Father rose to his feet, his face ashen and his shoulders shifted “This must be a mistake. There is no way Eleanor would do something like this. She is a good child. She would never betray Theon or bring disgrace to her family” “I think the evidence says otherwise” Malcolm, Theon’s grandfather spoke with a smooth, yet sharp tone and all heads turned towards him. “You have disappointed me, child. I believed you were the perfect daughter-in-law for my family, but you are just like the others” “I didn’t do this” I cried out, my voice laced with frustration and fear “These photos, the emails, it wasn’t me. Someone must be trying to frame me” Victoria scoffed “Oh, how convenient” She sneered “Do you think we are all stupid? You are still trying to lie?” I turned to Theon who had remained silent. His expression was unreadable as his hands were clasped above the table. The longer he said nothing, the more the dread coiled around me like a venomous snake waiting to strike. “Malcolm, surely you don’t really mean what you said? You’ve always praised Eleanor and have always been confident in her character” Father implored desperately. “It seems I made a mistake in my judgement and that had almost cost my family their reputation” Without another word, he turned and walked out of the hall. The heavy click of each step he took as he walked away was like a nail jammed into the coffin the text message had pushed me into. The room felt suffocating. The murmurs filled with judgement as eyes stared at me with scorn was choking and I found it hard to breathe. Eyes that had stared at me with envy and adoration now looked at me with disgust and hate. I was no longer the lucky woman who was about to marry into the prestigious Blackwell family but a snake. A traitor and a liar. When I turned back to Theon, his cold blue eyes were on me and his expression remained unreadable which made me feel worse. Even if Theon had never been the emotional type, I took the little warmth that was present in his eyes anytime he looked at me as love but now, the warmth was nowhere to be found. Theon stood up, the movement slow and desperate and without a word, he turned and walked away, leaving me behind as though I was nothing to him.ELLEEliza’s laughter rang through the garden as she scrambled away from my tickling fingers. We had set up a small picnic in the middle of the garden with the blanket on the grass and a basket with all her favourite food.“You are not playing fair, Ellie” she pointed an accusing but short finger at me as a pout framed her face after she recovered from the tickles. I raised both hand innocently as a chuckle escaped my lips “But I am a villain. Bad people don’t play fair”She giggled and threw herself at me “I guess so” she flashed me a bigger smile “but I won this time since you cheated” “Nope” I shook my head “I won fair and square. There were no rules” Eliza huffed and plopped down beside me. She reached for her juice and took a bit sip before handing the cup back to me. I groaned as she wrapped her sticky hands around me then giggled mischievously because she knew she had just stained my dress. “You little brat” I laughed “I thought you were a princess? Princesses don’t cheat”
ELLEA tired yawn left my lips as I stepped out of the bathroom, with the steam from my hot shower escaping into the room before I closed the door. I pulled the towel I had draped over my head out of my face and stopped in my tracks when I came faced with a surprise sight that I should be used to by now. Theon was in my bed again. He didn’t wait for an invitation or ask like he usually does. He was just splayed comfortably on my bed like it was the most natural thing in the world. He had one arm behind his head, shirtless, his legs crossed while he scrolled through his phone with a bored expression on his face. “Seriously?” I asked with a narrowed gaze and an irritated expression on my face “Do you want to explain what you are doing in my bed?”He looked up at me with a lazy smile on his lips and shrugged “I thought we’ve gone past me needing a reason to get into your bed?” “No, we didn’t besides it was a one time thing” I argued. “It’s happened too many times for it to be a on
ELLE I was waiting for the private investigator to get me more information on Amanda and Isla, but so far, he has not given me anything noteworthy. I hoped that meant she wasn’t planning anything more but that would be a wistful thinking. I knew she had not backed down since it was obvious that she was hell bent on defeating me. I had to admit that she scared me a little. It was one of the reasons I had avoided going to the house to see Milo. I moved Jeremy and Milo from the house they were at before since Theon had followed me once. I couldn’t take the risk if he decided to go back to see Milo even though Eliza was here now. Also, I couldn’t risk Amanda getting her hands on something that would hurt me. I would never risk exposing Milo’s existence to her. I didn’t even want to imagine what she would do when she finds out that I had such a weakness. Sophie entered my office and shut the door behind her. “We’ve been here a lot lately.” “I know” I closed my laptop with a
THEONI once again disappeared into my grandfather’s study, which was now my own. Since it was buried deep inside the estate’s mansion, it became very silent in the evenings, allowing me to bury myself in thoughts. My fingers tightened around the whiskey glass in my hand as I stood by the window, looking out into the compound of the estate that was getting dark. My jaw clenched as I remembered dinner earlier and Eleanor’s demand. Her voice replayed in my head like an irritating echo, and I couldn’t stop it. “I want to manage the mall chain. I know you gave it to Elle, but she already has her hands full with the Microfinance bank, the hotel shares you gifted her, her investment firm, and she has no child to give them to”Those were the exact words she spoke. She had grown audacious, and the moves she took made me mad. I know children were never in the contract, but that line rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like she was accusing Elle of not being able to have a child. Mocking her e
ELLE I don’t even know why I keep making efforts to eat at the big dining hall when it was always quiet, even though everyone was present. It was another boring morning breakfast, and everyone looked like they had better things to do than to sit here and pretend we wanted to eat together like a normal family. My eyes were on Amanda. She looked better today, less nervous, and I was worrying my brain to think why. She must have found a solution, and I somehow suspected that I wouldn’t like it. Theon was on his tablet, reviewing documents and was yet to touch the plate of food in front of him and I knew he was going to leave for work without touching the food. Victoria, on the other hand, sipped her tea quietly. I wasn’t comfortable with how quiet she had gotten since I took the mall from her. I knew she was brewing something, and that was why I had someone following her. I wouldn’t let her take me unaware. My attention was dragged back to Amanda. She was on her phone, and the
ELLE I knew the moment Amanda found out that Diamond had been arrested. If it wasn’t the scream I heard from her room yesterday, then it was the way her bloodshot eyes kept watching everyone like she was expecting them to call her out for something. She was scared. She was making mistakes. She was unravelling. It was amusing to watch her fight not to show how much the plan she thought she had in control spiralled. Jeremy showed me the news yesterday. Though the pictures were blurred, I knew it was Diamond and Lara. After all, we sent those pictures to the police and the media. I also instructed the private investigator to watch her always. I told him to make sure nothing she does escapes him. I wasn’t doing this just for evidence, but for my own safety. If Amanda could kill someone, then I wasn’t going to take any chances with her. I needed to be extremely careful, like Jeremy had insisted. I sat in the living room, pretending to be scrolling through my phone while she sa
AUTHOR’S POV The pressure on Amanda was mounting. She could not sleep, her eyes were aching, and she had a constant headache that wouldn’t go away. She felt like a trapped animal and the house she had done so many things to enter now felt like a cage. She was drowning with anxiety from it all. She jumped when her phone started to ring, and her breathing picked up when she saw it was an unknown number. At first, she didn’t want to answer the call for fear it was going to be her parents calling to ask for the money but something at the back of her mind ask what if it was Diamond calling to tell her he got out of prison and everything was now okay. With that in mind, she snatched the phone from the table and answered it immediately. “Hello?” she whispered uncertainly, her heart pounding in her chest. “Amanda,” Diamond growled on the other end of the line. “Diamond?” Her heart leapt when she heard his voice and she was started to believe that maybe everything would be fine no
AUTHOR’S POVAmanda could barely hold herself together. She sat on the edge of her bed, her perfectly manicured fingers drumming on the edge of the bed while the other hand stared at the phone she couldn’t look away from. The sun wasn’t enough to filter the chill she could feel creeping down her spine.Diamond should have contacted her by now. They had agreed to meet today since he wanted to collect payment for killing Lara. The bastard didn’t want the huge amount of money she offered. He wanted her body and she had no other choice than to give him what he wanted if she didn’t want him to go to the police or worse, send her along with her cousin.Disgust curled in her stomach at the thought of fucking that dirty scumbag. She didn’t know what she was thinking when she dated him back them. She eyed the phone with impatience. It’s been an hour later than the agreed time when he said he would call. She picked her real phone and entered the news app she had on the phone and refreshed
ELLEAfter finding out that Amanda was capable of ending the life of anyone who got in the way of what she wanted, I shivered in fear anytime I saw her. I didn’t know if she noticed or not, but there was something that I decided irrespective of what she was capable of. I needed to know just how much she knew and what I could use to end her when the time came. I still needed more proof in order to get rid of her without revealing my identity. She had been acting weird lately and this had made her make a lot of mistakes and even break character without her realising it now. Like now, she was eating a caramel cookie which I was allergic to. I eyed the maids around, seeing the opportunity to start planting doubts that would be useful when the right time came. “I thought Eleanor hated caramel because she was allergic to them?” I pointed out, using my name in third person on purpose. “She did,” Amanda said too quickly, glancing at the maid with panic on her face. “I mean, I do.
