**Russell’s POV**

Brunk’s eyes burned with hate, his hand reaching for the gun at his hip, but I saw it coming before he even moved. My body reacted faster than my mind, and in a heartbeat, I darted for Damien, grabbing him by the neck, my knife pressed against his throat. The knife bit into his skin, a thin line of blood trickling down.

“Pull the trigger, and I slit his throat!” I yelled, my voice raw, spitting the words like venom.

Damien squirmed, his breath hitching. “Dad… Dad, please, I don’t wanna die. Save me!” His voice cracked, pathetic, his hands clawing at my arm.

“You think killing my son will save you? It will only make me furious, and you know what? I don’t mind losing a son. Kill him, and then let’s see what happens to you,” Brunk sneered.

“Dad! Dad, please, I beg you! Don’t be like this, please save me!” Damien pleaded, his voice trembling.

“Shut the fuck up!” Brunk yelled at his own son. I could see Damien flinch out of fear, quickly falling silent, swallowing the wor

**Russell’s POV**I was in the middle of a heated argument with my men, their voices loud in the cramped room, when a scream cut through the air. It was Mara, the healer. I recognized the voice instantly. My stomach dropped. Ava. Something was wrong with Ava—that was the first thought that came to my mind.I didn’t think. I just ran, shoving past the guys, my shoes slamming against the polished floor. The hallway stretched forever, but I ran faster, my heart pounding like a drum in my chest. When I reached the healer, she was standing outside a door, trembling, her eyes wide with panic.“What is it?” I grabbed her shoulders, shaking her. “Why are you screaming?” I asked.Mara pointed into the room, her hand shaking. “It’s Ava… she’s on the floor, and blood’s coming from her nose.”My heart stopped. I rushed inside and saw her. She was crumpled on the ground, her face white as a sheet, blood smeared across her lips. “Ava! Ava!” I called as I dropped to my knees, tapping her cheek, pray

Russell’s POVFor a second, I thought it was me—I thought I was the one who had been shot. The loud sound of the gunshot still rang in my ears, making everything else go silent. My eyes blinked rapidly, my body frozen—until I saw her.She was right in front of me. And for the briefest moment, she looked just as stunned as I was. Her mouth parted slightly, her eyes wide, like she wasn’t sure what had just happened. Then, her body gave out.“No—Ava!” My voice tore from my throat, raw and broken. She collapsed to her knees like a puppet whose strings had been cut, then crumpled to the ground with a sickening thud. Blood—so much blood—spilled from beneath her. I could feel my heart pounding faster than it ever had before. The blood soaked the dry leaves, and my knees gave out beneath me. I dropped to the ground, instantly crawling toward her, my shaking hands reaching to touch her.“Ava, Ava… no, no, please stay with me. You can't... you can't die,” I whispered, my voice trembling as I c

a life for a lifeBefore the man could pull the trigger, I rushed him, hitting his hand. The bullet slammed into the body of the crashed car instead of Russell, who still lay helplessly stuck under the car’s crushing weight.“You little peasant!” the big, scary man growled as he struck me across the face.I fell to the ground, whimpering as more blood trickled down my head.“You think you’re so strong, right? You think you’re brave?” he growled more as he walked toward me and kicked me square in the stomach.Blood gushed out of my mouth from the impact of the kick, and my vision was already becoming blurry.Russell, still in the vehicle, yelled as he struggled to get out, seeing my condition. “If you touch her again, I’ll make sure to rip your head from your body!”“Oh, shut the fuck up!” the monster yelled. “I’ll kill her first, and when I’m done with her, I’ll kill you next. That way, no one else will get to stand in my way.”I lay there very weak, almost giving out. But then Jia’s

Ava’s POVI stood there frozen, my heart pounding so hard I could barely hear Russell’s voice over the blood rushing in my ears.“Ava, we need to move. Now.” His tone was sharp, urgent, but my feet wouldn’t budge. My father’s men were closing in, and just the thought of facing him—of what he’d do to me—turned my insides to ice.“He’ll kill me, Russell,” I stammered, my voice cracking. “You don’t understand. If he catches us, there’s no way out. He’ll kill us both.” My hands trembled as I clutched the edge of the table in the dimly lit safehouse room, my mind spiraling with images of my father’s cold, merciless eyes.Jia stirred inside me, her voice cutting through my panic like a blade. Ava, I know you’re scared, but this isn’t the time to cry like a chicken. Russell’s right. We need to move. Now. Don’t worry—I’ll be with you. Let’s go.I let out a heavy sigh, my chest tight. Jia’s words steadied me, but not enough to shake the terror gripping my bones. I remained rooted to the spot,

**Damian’s POV**I was exhausted, my legs burning as I stumbled through the dark woods, William’s heavy body slung over my shoulder. His weight was killing me, but I couldn’t stop. We were close to the Shadow Pack’s estate—too close to give up now. The early morning air was cold, biting at my skin, but I kept moving, one step at a time. William’s shallow breaths were the only thing keeping me going. He was alive, barely, and I had to get him help. When I saw the estate gates, my knees nearly gave out. I crouched down, easing William to the ground, his blood soaking into my shirt. The guards spotted us right away. “Damian!” one shouted, rushing over with two others. They saw William’s torn-up body and didn’t ask questions. They lifted him, supporting his weight, and we hurried toward the healer’s quarters.“Get him to the healer!” I barked as we passed through the gates, my voice rough from panting. “Now!” They nodded, carrying William off to Torin, the pack’s healer—an old guy who’d b
