The drive to my grandfather's house is shorter than I expected. As the car pulls up the long gravel drive way. I stare at the huge mansion. A gorgeous house that looks like it belongs to a forgotten time period. The first time I saw it I was blown away. I was used to new money houses and McMansions. But this was a house that had stood for decades after the ones that built it were decomposing skeletons in their graves.

I can’t believe this was what I was missing. When my grandfather first reached out I thought it was a scam email. A rich grandfather that wanted to meet me? Yeah, right. But then he sent documents showing proof that we were biologically related. Along with pictures of a woman that looked like me. My birth mother. I could not believe it. She looked so similar to me. I had to meet him.

We met at a local coffee shop near my high school. He told me how his daughter got into a bad crowd during her college years, and ended up getting into drugs. Then they ended up getting into a big fight, and he told her to leave his home and never come back. From then on he thought he would never see her again. But then she turned up to his house, pregnant. He told me that he tried to get her to stay, but she refused and left without a second glance back at him.

I think back to the look on his face while recounting the story about my mother. A look of immense guilt and sorrow. And under that was a glint of hard steel. The look of a man who was determined to get back what he lost. He gave me his number and told me to reach out to him if there was anything I needed. I left the coffee shop unsure of how I felt about him. Why had he never reached out to me before? But as the days dragged on I could not help but want a connection with him. Nor could I blame him.

It is hard to help someone that does not want to be helped.

As far as seeking me out. I can’t imagine how hard tracking down a kid in the American foster system could be. And once I am eighteen I can come and live with him and my parents can’t do anything about it. I was supposed to live with Brandon once I turn eighteen … but that is clearly off the table now.

But I do not want to think about that right now.

Above all my grandfather wanted me. And it felt good to have that familial connection with someone. I have never felt as safe and cared for than when we would talk to each other. Something I never felt with my family at home. But it was something I desperately wanted.

The driver opens my door and I step out on the gravel driveway. I walk up towards the arched entrance to knock on the wooden door. But before my knuckles make contact the door swings open. My grandfather greets me with a warm smile. “Come here my sweet girl” he says with his arms opened wide. I accept his embrace. I feel safe and loved with his strong but slightly bony arms wrapped around me. A type of love I never felt before radiates from the warmth of his hug. And it takes all my power to not fall apart in his arms on the steps of his beautiful ancient house.

  • Revenge of the Discarded Daughter    Chapter Seven: Waiting

I stay in the bathroom just staring at my reflection in the mirror. I hear a knock at the door. I don’t answer in fear that it’s one of my family members. They knock again. I decide to respond in order to let them know someone's in here. But as soon as I say “someone’s in here” I immediately regret it. Because I hear that familiar shrill voice “RUBY, GET OUT OF THERE RIGHT NOW!” “Fuck” is the only thought that comes to my mind. Of course, it had to be someone in the family and not just anyone but my mother. “RUBY! OPEN THE DOOR. STOP MAKING A SCENE”. I roll my eyes at the hypocrisy. She’s the one going off like a fire alarm, but I am the one making a scene? I decide to just stay silent. There’s no way she can stay out there and just bang on the door all night. I hear more footsteps. Then I hear some hushed voices. “Ruby, open the door” the voice is calmer but far more colder. My father. I decide to stay quiet. I hold my breath, willing them to go away. A few more firm knocks. A co

Saturday morning came slow. The night was a hard one. I was tossing and turning and worrying was plaguing my mind. Today is Brandon’s and I’s fifth anniversary. But he still hasn’t talked to me. To make matters worse today I have to go to dinner with my family to meet Miracles’ boyfriend and his family. So I have to sit there and smile, acting happy for Miracle while my relationship falls apart. My mother let me off the hook for chores today because of dinner tonight. However, Cassandra has been glowering at me each time I leave my room. I pretend not to notice. But sometimes it still gets to me. I don’t know why she hates me so much. Somedays I wonder if I truly am the problem, why else does everyone in my life hate me? I know that she’s probably just miserable in her station in life and making me feel small is her pathetic way of taking control back. Evening comes too fast. I get ready for dinner. The dress I wear is a short navy blue with a poofy skirt. Its heart

  • Revenge of the Discarded Daughter    Chapter Five: Out of place

Five days. Five days since Sunday. Five days of no calls or texts from Brandon. I still have two classes left. I sit in English class drumming my pencil on my desk. I ignore Ava and Grace's looks and snickers as they gossip. I know it’s about me. I see it in their quick glances. When I first entered the class Ava asked me “how is your boyfriend doing?” in a mocking tone. I don’t know how they know. Maybe Miracle overheard me calling Brandon multiple times and figured it out. She always sticks her nose in my business. That's the only logical explanation. Unless… Brandon told her. No. Impossible, Brandon wouldn’t do that. He knows how badly Miracle treats me. He said it himself “I would never want to meet such an awful girl”. That was after I finally confessed to the abuse I faced at home. Though I didn’t know it was abuse before that. Brandon was appalled at how my family treated me. I told him it was no big deal. He told me that what they were doing was abuse and that I dese

That monday I go over his words in my head. Selfish? Am I really selfish? I don’t know where these feelings of his have come from. Nor am I certain how to address them. I am at my locker and getting my science book when I see them. Ava and Grace. They are talking together in the quad. I want to approach them. I want us to be friends again. But… is that even possible? After what they have done, I can’t even look at them without feeling some anger. But after only two weeks of not talking I find myself missing them. Cassandra left once she realized she wouldn’t get a rise from me. It was 2:30 when I finished the other spiral stair. I headed to my room to rest. He understands why I have been counting down the days until I am eighteen. Once my eighteenth birthday comes, he promises he will come and take me to live with him.
