LOGINI stay in the bathroom just staring at my reflection in the mirror. I hear a knock at the door. I don’t answer in fear that it’s one of my family members. They knock again. I decide to respond in order to let them know someone's in here. But as soon as I say “someone’s in here” I immediately regret it. Because I hear that familiar shrill voice “RUBY, GET OUT OF THERE RIGHT NOW!”
“Fuck” is the only thought that comes to my mind. Of course, it had to be someone in the family and not just anyone but my mother. “RUBY! OPEN THE DOOR. STOP MAKING A SCENE”. I roll my eyes at the hypocrisy. She’s the one going off like a fire alarm, but I am the one making a scene? I decide to just stay silent. There’s no way she can stay out there and just bang on the door all night. I hear more footsteps. Then I hear some hushed voices. “Ruby, open the door” the voice is calmer but far more colder. My father.
I decide to stay quiet. I hold my breath, willing them to go away. A few more firm knocks. A couple minutes of whispered threats. My phone lights up with a notification. “Five minutes, be patient” the text says. And I say a silent prayer. Finally, I hear the voices outside the door fade, and I hear retreating footsteps. They're gone. So, I wait, in this fancy bathroom as my heart pounds in my chest at every sound I hear. And here, I am hoping. Hoping that no one else needs the bathroom. Hoping that these five minutes stop feeling like hours.
Just as I thought I would have a straight up mental breakdown, my phone lights up again. “Here”. That single word brought me all the relief I needed. My legs feel like they could collapse out from under me. I open the bathroom door tenderly, I look left and right as though I am crossing a road. But in all honesty a busy road would have been safer. I hurry down the hall towards the main dining area.
The dining room is filled with people dressed in finery. Women had pearl necklaces ,gold and silver jewelry that sparkled in the light of the candles that sat on each table. Men wore suits and expensive watches. They sat around their tables laughing and drinking whatever expensive alcohol they enjoyed. I scan the room and my eyes lock onto the table where everyone still sits. The sight is like a knife being twisted in my heart. Brandon is holding Miracle close to his chest, as though she had always belonged there.
And in this place, she did look like she belonged there. With her blonde curled hair, diamond earrings, and midnight blue dress that touched the floor. I knew that on her feet were high heels from Louis Vuitton. She looked every inch like a person who would go to a high dining establishment like this. Then there was him. In his suit wearing the watch I saved up to get him. I should have left. But I could not stop staring at them. Then he stood up. I panicked thinking that they were leaving and would see me standing here. But no, I think that would be better than what I was seeing. Of the pain I am feeling as he started to get down on one knee.
No. NO! This is not happening. The man I love and have spent five years with cannot be proposing to my younger sister. Why? Why is this happening to me? What did I do wrong? And why in the fuck is it always because of her. She is not special. She has no talent or skill out of the ordinary. She is not even that attractive. As far as looks, there are far more girls that look better than her and many more that look, act, and dress like her.
The tears come before I can stop them. I wipe them away and they keep on coming. My phone buzzes “You coming, he's waiting on you”. I am taken out of my pain for the time being and I sent a quick text back. I head toward the entrance of the restaurant. I look back one last time, at their smiles and the waiters congratulating them. But I force myself to move forward, because I have to.
The drive to my grandfather's house is shorter than I expected. As the car pulls up the long gravel drive way. I stare at the huge mansion. A gorgeous house that looks like it belongs to a forgotten time period. The first time I saw it I was blown away. I was used to new money houses and McMansions. But this was a house that had stood for decades after the ones that built it were decomposing skeletons in their graves.I can’t believe this was what I was missing. When my grandfather first reached out I thought it was a scam email. A rich grandfather that wanted to meet me? Yeah, right. But then he sent documents showing proof that we were biologically related. Along with pictures of a woman that looked like me. My birth mother. I could not believe it. She looked so similar to me. I had to meet him. We met at a local coffee shop near my high school. He told me how his daughter got into a bad crowd during her college years, and ended up getting into drugs. Then they ended up getting int

Saturday morning came slow. The night was a hard one. I was tossing and turning and worrying was plaguing my mind. Today is Brandon’s and I’s fifth anniversary. But he still hasn’t talked to me. To make matters worse today I have to go to dinner with my family to meet Miracles’ boyfriend and his family. So I have to sit there and smile, acting happy for Miracle while my relationship falls apart. My mother let me off the hook for chores today because of dinner tonight. However, Cassandra has been glowering at me each time I leave my room. I pretend not to notice. But sometimes it still gets to me. I don’t know why she hates me so much. Somedays I wonder if I truly am the problem, why else does everyone in my life hate me? I know that she’s probably just miserable in her station in life and making me feel small is her pathetic way of taking control back. Evening comes too fast. I get ready for dinner. The dress I wear is a short navy blue with a poofy skirt. Its heart
Five days. Five days since Sunday. Five days of no calls or texts from Brandon. I still have two classes left. I sit in English class drumming my pencil on my desk. I ignore Ava and Grace's looks and snickers as they gossip. I know it’s about me. I see it in their quick glances. When I first entered the class Ava asked me “how is your boyfriend doing?” in a mocking tone. I don’t know how they know. Maybe Miracle overheard me calling Brandon multiple times and figured it out. She always sticks her nose in my business. That's the only logical explanation. Unless… Brandon told her. No. Impossible, Brandon wouldn’t do that. He knows how badly Miracle treats me. He said it himself “I would never want to meet such an awful girl”. That was after I finally confessed to the abuse I faced at home. Though I didn’t know it was abuse before that. Brandon was appalled at how my family treated me. I told him it was no big deal. He told me that what they were doing was abuse and that I dese
That monday I go over his words in my head. Selfish? Am I really selfish? I don’t know where these feelings of his have come from. Nor am I certain how to address them. I tried calling this morning before school. But no response. I text him whenever I get the chance. But I also don’t want to overwhelm him. What if he sees my worry as simple nagging. I just want us to be okay. I never thought we weren’t okay. I don’t know what else to do. I haven’t seen him around school. What am I going to do? It’s not like he can avoid me forever. Right? I am at my locker and getting my science book when I see them. Ava and Grace. They are talking together in the quad. I want to approach them. I want us to be friends again. But… is that even possible? After what they have done, I can’t even look at them without feeling some anger. But after only two weeks of not talking I find myself missing them. We have been friends since middle school. When did it all fall apart?
Cassandra left once she realized she wouldn’t get a rise from me. It was 2:30 when I finished the other spiral stair. I headed to my room to rest. As soon as I plopped down on the bed I checked my messages. Brandon had sent me four messages. My heart soared at the possibility of him caring about me so much. Next weekend would mark a whole five years we would have been together. The only reason I am able to keep holding on is because of him. He allows me to vent to him about my situation. He understands why I have been counting down the days until I am eighteen. Once my eighteenth birthday comes, he promises he will come and take me to live with him. The only reason he hasn’t yet is because he is worried that my parents will stop me from going. But once I am a legal adult my parents hold no authority over me. And I can go do whatever I want.I have five months till my birthday. And I can’t wait. I will be with someone who truly cares about me. Who loves me and most importan
