LOGINFive days. Five days since Sunday. Five days of no calls or texts from Brandon. I still have two classes left. I sit in English class drumming my pencil on my desk. I ignore Ava and Grace's looks and snickers as they gossip. I know it’s about me. I see it in their quick glances. When I first entered the class Ava asked me “how is your boyfriend doing?” in a mocking tone.
I don’t know how they know. Maybe Miracle overheard me calling Brandon multiple times and figured it out. She always sticks her nose in my business. That's the only logical explanation. Unless… Brandon told her. No. Impossible, Brandon wouldn’t do that. He knows how badly Miracle treats me. He said it himself “I would never want to meet such an awful girl”. That was after I finally confessed to the abuse I faced at home. Though I didn’t know it was abuse before that. Brandon was appalled at how my family treated me. I told him it was no big deal. He told me that what they were doing was abuse and that I deserved far better than a family that treats me worse than garbage. I was upset. I was mad at him. “What did he know?” I thought at the time. It wasn’t until later that night I realized he was right. It was abuse. That's when I started planning my escape. I started working doing online photoshop and graphic design. I used my parents credit card to buy the certification course. They owed me that much. I used free graphic design and photoshop apps. I opened an account with a bank online. However, since I was not eighteen I needed a parents or legal guardians permission and have it be a joint account. So, I used my mothers card, if there is one thing I can count on, it's her inability to check her bank details. Once I turn eighteen I plan on making my own account and transferring the money. Five more months. Then I am free. When I enter the house my mother and sister are hurrying around. My mother notices me first. “Ruby, hurry up we got to go” she shrilled. I am tired of her constant shrilling. Sometimes I wonder whether that’s just the natural sound of her voice. “Go where?” I ask. She looks at me as though I am the dumbest creature alive. “To the mall of course” she scoffs. The drive there was… harrowing. It felt like I was invisible. Except for when they took not so subtle jabs at my appearance. They said I was plain, unkempt, and my clothes were frumpy. Miracle said I was a “nerdy loner that had no friends”. And that caused my anger to flare, but I held my tongue. I could have snapped back. Said that she was a shallow “popular” girl that had fake friends and couldn’t tell the difference between there, they’re, and their. A pathetic hazbin waiting to happen, a future housewife that does nothing but scroll on i*******m. When we arrived at the mall we immediately went to Windsor. The dresses were fancy and sparkles were everywhere. They were all so beautiful. But… I never felt like I deserved to wear something so expensive or beautiful. Being here makes me feel more out of place. Miracle takes her time looking through the racks. Putting her arm against each dress that catches her eye to see if it looks good with her complexion. “Mom, do you think I should go for a short dress or a long dress?” Miracle asks. “Well honey, you look good in anything you wear” our mother coos. Miracle flashes her a sweet smile. “Thank you! You're the best mom a girl could ask for” she says in full sincerity. But as our mother gushes, Miracle looks over at me and smirks. It was a deliberate attack. It stings. That much I admit. I wish it didn’t hurt. But it does. I have a mother, but having Sheila as a mother makes me wish I didn’t have one at all. She always makes me feel so small and insignificant. Like I don’t belong in this family. They all make me feel like I am out of place. Out of place at school. Out of place at home. Out of place in my own life. What if I never find the place where I belong? The place where I am not out of place, where the people there will treat me with respect I deserve. The drive to my grandfather's house is shorter than I expected. As the car pulls up the long gravel drive way. I stare at the huge mansion. A gorgeous house that looks like it belongs to a forgotten time period. The first time I saw it I was blown away. I was used to new money houses and McMansions. But this was a house that had stood for decades after the ones that built it were decomposing skeletons in their graves.I can’t believe this was what I was missing. When my grandfather first reached out I thought it was a scam email. A rich grandfather that wanted to meet me? Yeah, right. But then he sent documents showing proof that we were biologically related. Along with pictures of a woman that looked like me. My birth mother. I could not believe it. She looked so similar to me. I had to meet him. We met at a local coffee shop near my high school. He told me how his daughter got into a bad crowd during her college years, and ended up getting into drugs. Then they ended up getting int
I stay in the bathroom just staring at my reflection in the mirror. I hear a knock at the door. I don’t answer in fear that it’s one of my family members. They knock again. I decide to respond in order to let them know someone's in here. But as soon as I say “someone’s in here” I immediately regret it. Because I hear that familiar shrill voice “RUBY, GET OUT OF THERE RIGHT NOW!” “Fuck” is the only thought that comes to my mind. Of course, it had to be someone in the family and not just anyone but my mother. “RUBY! OPEN THE DOOR. STOP MAKING A SCENE”. I roll my eyes at the hypocrisy. She’s the one going off like a fire alarm, but I am the one making a scene? I decide to just stay silent. There’s no way she can stay out there and just bang on the door all night. I hear more footsteps. Then I hear some hushed voices. “Ruby, open the door” the voice is calmer but far more colder. My father. I decide to stay quiet. I hold my breath, willing them to go away. A few more firm knocks. A co
Saturday morning came slow. The night was a hard one. I was tossing and turning and worrying was plaguing my mind. Today is Brandon’s and I’s fifth anniversary. But he still hasn’t talked to me. To make matters worse today I have to go to dinner with my family to meet Miracles’ boyfriend and his family. So I have to sit there and smile, acting happy for Miracle while my relationship falls apart. My mother let me off the hook for chores today because of dinner tonight. However, Cassandra has been glowering at me each time I leave my room. I pretend not to notice. But sometimes it still gets to me. I don’t know why she hates me so much. Somedays I wonder if I truly am the problem, why else does everyone in my life hate me? I know that she’s probably just miserable in her station in life and making me feel small is her pathetic way of taking control back. Evening comes too fast. I get ready for dinner. The dress I wear is a short navy blue with a poofy skirt. Its heart

That monday I go over his words in my head. Selfish? Am I really selfish? I don’t know where these feelings of his have come from. Nor am I certain how to address them. I tried calling this morning before school. But no response. I text him whenever I get the chance. But I also don’t want to overwhelm him. What if he sees my worry as simple nagging. I just want us to be okay. I never thought we weren’t okay. I don’t know what else to do. I haven’t seen him around school. What am I going to do? It’s not like he can avoid me forever. Right? I am at my locker and getting my science book when I see them. Ava and Grace. They are talking together in the quad. I want to approach them. I want us to be friends again. But… is that even possible? After what they have done, I can’t even look at them without feeling some anger. But after only two weeks of not talking I find myself missing them. We have been friends since middle school. When did it all fall apart?
Cassandra left once she realized she wouldn’t get a rise from me. It was 2:30 when I finished the other spiral stair. I headed to my room to rest. As soon as I plopped down on the bed I checked my messages. Brandon had sent me four messages. My heart soared at the possibility of him caring about me so much. Next weekend would mark a whole five years we would have been together. The only reason I am able to keep holding on is because of him. He allows me to vent to him about my situation. He understands why I have been counting down the days until I am eighteen. Once my eighteenth birthday comes, he promises he will come and take me to live with him. The only reason he hasn’t yet is because he is worried that my parents will stop me from going. But once I am a legal adult my parents hold no authority over me. And I can go do whatever I want.I have five months till my birthday. And I can’t wait. I will be with someone who truly cares about me. Who loves me and most importan
