ログインChapter 005
Adrian's POV
I was in the middle of a board meeting when my phone buzzed.
Kelly: Don’t be late! . I’ll pay for the meal; don’t worry.
I reread the message.
I shut the folder. "We’re done."
I looked up to see twelve executives staring at me.
Jonah, my assistant, leaned forward. "Sir, we still need to discuss the Sterling acquisition."
"We’ll do that tomorrow."
"Sir, your wife…"
I looked up.
He cleared his throat. "Enjoy your dinner, sir."
I stood, fastened my jacket, and headed out. I’d built this company from the ground up over the past ten years, and I'd never missed a meeting.
But I’d never been asked out to dinner by a woman who wanted to pay.
As I walked into the car park.
I saw a small red car three spots away. The engine was just turning over and the woman looked up, blinking.
Kelly.
I turned my face away and climbed into the car. "Drive."
My driver sped off.
I watched her drive away through my tinted windows.
Too close.
"Sir, you should tell her," Jonah said from the front.
"Not yet."
"She works for you."
"I know."
And that was the issue. I hadn’t intended to give her a promotion. I just wanted to know who she was. The morning after our wedding I told Jonah to get her file. By lunchtime, I had read through all her reviews, reports, and projects she had taken on over the past six years.
She had earned that promotion three times over.
I just signed the paper.
It had nothing to do with her sleeping against my chest.
"Get me some clothes. Something plain."
Jonah blinked. "Plain sir?"
"Normal clothes."
He stared. "Sir, I’m not sure you have anything like that."
"Buy some."
The bar was very noisy, warm, and busy.
I found her at a corner table. She was looking through her phone with a small smile on her lips. She was wearing a simple white blouse, black trousers, and her hair was tied back.
She looked up and saw me.
Her whole face lit up.
"You came!"
"I invited you."
"I know but I was worried you’d be busy. Come sit with me." She patted the seat next to her.
I sat down.
"Order whatever you like," she said, sliding a menu across. "Seriously, order anything."
I skimmed through the menu. "Is there a limit?"Absolutely not. Today, I am rich."
I almost smiled. "I thought you were rich yesterday."
"Yesterday I was a branch manager. Today however, I’m a Managing Director." She leaned forward, her eyes twinkling. "I’m making ten times more than what I was earning. Ten times more, Adrian!"
"Congratulations."
"Congrats!" She said enthusiastically.
I smiled. "Congratulations."
She giggled and clapped.
Something fluttered in my chest.
Our waiter arrived and straightened up when he saw me.
"Mr. Haw…"
I coughed loudly.
He froze.
"Are you okay?" Kelly asked turning.
"I’m fine. Just something caught in my throat."
He nodded. "I’ll get your drinks."
He sped off, almost knocking into a tray.
"That was weird. Does he know you?" she asked.
"I come here sometimes."
"Oh. That’s nice." She shrugged. "It’s probably the kind of place a normal guy would come."
I didn’t correct her.
The food arrived and she insisted on filling my plate. She talked nonstop about her new office, how the executives had smiled too much and how weird it was to be called Ma’am by people who previously ignored her in the elevator.
I listened.
I realised I’d been listening for over an hour and hadn’t checked my phone once.
"How are you?" she asked randomly.
"How am I?"
"You never tell me anything. What do you do?"
My fork hovered.
I’d been expecting this question. I’d practised in the car.
"I work in… management."Management?"
"Mainly admin."
"Oh." Her eyes softened. "Don’t worry. It’s just a job. Are you earning enough to…"
"I am."
"If you’re struggling I can help?"
"I’m not."
"You could come live with me. My apartment is big enough and you wouldn’t have to pay rent."
I almost choked on my water.
She patted my back. "Easy, easy."
Live with her.
It would be so easy to say yes. But it would be a disaster within a week. I’d have to explain why my clothes were more expensive than her car.
"We should take our time," I said carefully. "We’ve only just got married."
"Fake married," she corrected.
My chest tightened slightly. "Right."
"But we could be friends." She tilted her head. "Legal friends."
"Friends."
She smiled. "Thank you for coming that night. I know I made things complicated but I really don’t regret asking you."
I looked at her hand over mine.
Small and warm.
I forgot how to talk for a second.
"I don’t regret saying yes."
Her cheeks flushed and she pulled her hand away. "Okay! Dessert!"
She argued with me the whole time. Trying to convince me to try the lava cake. I told her I don’t eat sugar.
But she won.
I reached for the bill.
She smacked my hand. "No!
"Kelly."
"Adrian."
"I can pay."
"I know but I want to." Her voice softened. "Please let me. I never get to pamper someone who isn’t trying to take advantage of me."
Ouch.
I let go.
She paid, smiling like she’d won a war. I tried to think of the last time someone had paid for me.
I couldn’t.
The night air was chilly outside and she wrapped her arms around herself. I wanted to drape my jacket over her shoulders.
"I'll drive you home,"Do you have a car?"
My driver was parked across the road, blending into the shadows. I had texted him to stay hidden.
"It’s a friend’s."
She looked at me thoughtfully. "You have a lot of friends with cars."
"I have a lot of friends."
"Hmm." She raised an eyebrow. "I thought I saw you in the car park today."
My heart pounded.
"No. I was at the office."
"Which one?"
"The other one."
She stared.
She giggled. "I must be going mad. I’m getting too excited."
I took a slow breath.
Before she could ask anything else, my phone buzzed.
I looked at the screen.
Jonah: Sir. The wedding video has gone online. It has thousands of views. Your face is in a few videos.
I slowly looked up.
She was still smiling at me, completely oblivious. Her phone was in her hand and she was hovering her thumb over the screen.
Her phone lit up.
I can't help but wonder which message came into her phone.
Hope it's not the wedding videos too and I hope there are no comments from anyone who recognized who I truly was.
The feeling of restlessness settled within me.
Kelly's POVAfter the call with Adrian, I lay awake for hours. He had sounded afraid, and that frightened me more than Damien's card. But the next morning, I replied to Damien anyway: Café Orsay, three o'clock.I told myself I was only going to find out what he wanted. That was a lie. Adrian had said not to go, and I was going anyway. The café sat on a quiet corner, away from the office. I arrived ten minutes early to choose my seat. A table near the window. Back to the wall. Exit in sight.Damien Sterling arrived exactly on time.He wore a navy suit and no tie, and when he smiled, the whole café seemed to turn toward him. A waiter hurried over before he even sat down."The usual, sir?""Not today. My guest decides." He looked at me. "Though I have a guess.""Go ahead.""Black coffee. No sugar. You do not trust anything that hides the taste."I stared at him. "Did you read my file?""I read your interviews. You said it in a business magazine last year." He sat down. "Was I right?""Ye
Adrian's POVSomebody was paying Thomas Bennett to ruin my wife's life.I read the bank record twice, and my hands went cold.Three deposits in four days. Each one was small, and none of them would catch a bank's attention. But together they told a clear story. The money came from an offshore account, the same kind Jonah had traced behind Natalia's company."It is the same pattern, sir," Jonah said. He stood in front of my desk with a tablet in his hands. "Different names, same structure. Whoever pays Natalia also pays Thomas."I leaned back in my chair. "Then it is one person.""That is my guess.""But you cannot prove it.""Not yet. The trail stops at a shell company in the Cayman Islands. After that, nothing."I pressed my fingers against my forehead. A headache had been building behind my eyes since morning."What does Thomas do for this money?""Nothing yet, as far as I can see. He is not working. He spends it on food, and a cheap phone.""A phone.""Yes, sir. We checked his call
Kelly's POVI listened to Thomas's voicemail four times before I deleted it.His voice sounded softer than I remembered. Warm and sorry, like the man who used to bring me tea when I worked late. That was the worst part. For two years, I had believed that voice.I know where you live. I'll wait until you're ready.I put the phone face down on the table. My hand was still shaking. I took a deep breath, finished half a cup of coffee, and went to work.Ava was already at her desk when I arrived.Early. Dressed in a neat gray skirt. Hair tied back. Three folders sat beside her keyboard, in the correct order.I stopped at the door. "Did someone kidnap you and replace you?"She grinned. "I stayed up reading.""Reading what?""The training manual you gave me. And your old branch reports. I wanted to understand how you think."I raised an eyebrow. "And?""You write your summary on the first page and put the details at the back. So nobody has to dig for the main point." She lifted a sheet of pa
Adrian's POVI was standing in the doorway.Thomas had not moved. He was still staring at the grey curtain. But he was slumped. One hand was rubbing the base of his neck.Three weeks ago he had been standing at an altar looking perfectly put together. Smiling like he owned the world. Now he looked lost.I stepped out of the shadows."She's asleep."Thomas jumped so hard he nearly dropped his phone. He turned around. His face showed fear, surprise, and something darker."You.""I know.""What are you doing here?""I could ask you the same question.""This isn't any of your business." His voice cracked slightly. "She's my fiancée.""She was.""She's...""I married her. In front of two hundred people. You were there!"His jaw tightened. And for a second he looked like he was going to punch me. But then he looked me up and down. My simple shirt and old watch. And he let out a laugh."I knew it.""You knew what?""You aren't rich. I know you've got bodyguards and nice cars, but I just coul
Adrian's POVMy phone buzzed at exactly 6 pmKelly: I'm cooking tonight! Come over please! Don't say you're busy!I was currently in a meeting with the legal department.I glanced at my phone. Then at the lawyer."Cancel the rest."Jonah, who was standing by the door, merely sighed and pulled out his tablet."Sir, your car?""No. I will get a taxi.""A taxi?""Kelly thinks my driver is a friend. If I come in a car that costs more than her building she'll question me.""Ok sir."I rubbed my temples.I had never lost any sleep over running a billion-dollar company for years now. But now I was losing sleep over a girl who thinks I do paperwork. Her apartment was on the fourth floor of a quiet block. No lift.I climbed the stairs slowly, holding my bag of fruit that I had bought from a street vendor. I wasn't sure if I had done it right. I had given the shopkeeper my notes and he stared at them for ages before giving me too much change. Finally at her door.I knocked. The door opened. She
Kelly P. O.V.I walked into Hawthorne Global Group on Monday morning, and the whole floor fell silent. All of the eyes were on me.I fixed my blazer and continued to walk towards the elevator which opened to the executive floor. A young lady behind the front desk shot up."Good morning Ms. Williams!""Good morning."She would have had no idea who I was three weeks ago.I walked into my new office, which was at the end of the corridor. It had glass walls, a leather chair, and a view of the whole city. I dropped my bag onto the desk.Managing Director.I have worked for this position for the past eight years. All the late nights, weekends, and projects that nobody wanted. There was a knock on the door."Come in."The HR director, Mrs Collins, and a girl walked in.A very young girl. She looked to be about twenty-two. She had long black hair, big eyes, and was wearing a pale pink dress that looked way too fragile for an office. Her heels looked like she wasn’t used to them."This is your
