LUCIAN

The last thing I’d expected when I came down from my office to get some refreshments was for Violet to ask me if I could participate in the game they had going on.

I was a busy man. So, it made sense that I’d have a lot more going than preoccupying myself with whatever games they had on.

But something about her eyes, the way her tone had gone softer when she asked me. I didn’t have it in me to say no.

Well, not like I was compelled to. I was simply humoring her. She wanted a game of tag, she would get a game of tag.

Which was how I found myself running past trees, all to escape being made tasks. Reese had no trouble in keeping up with my speed, the outline of her shadow zipping past me as quick as the wind.

The person that had me impressed was none other than Violet. She was doing a stellar job at keeping up with us.

Every now and then, I’d find the outline of her whole form keeping pace with how fast I ran.

“You good?”

VIOLETWhen Lucian had said he had somewhere he wanted to show me, I didn’t think it would be this. A large lake stretched wide before us. The movement of the water was soft, occasionally clashing with the banks before eventually receding again.“Come on,” Lucian’s voice broke me out of my daze.I nodded, taking off my seatbelt before getting out of the car. Now outside, it was easier to get a better view of the whole place. There was something surreal about the whole place. One would think it was something straight out of a movie. It was all so surreal.“What do you think?”I turned to Lucian. Had he been watching me the whole time? His eyes were mostly always an unreadable mask so it wasn’t easy trying to read his mind.My gaze flickered back to the lake. “It’s beautiful.”Before I realized it, my feet were wandering, eyes soaking in the whole place as much as I can. “Has it always been here?”Different trees and flush forestry lined the adjacent area making the place somewhat seclu

VIOLET“Eh?”Lucian blinked. “Got something in your ears?”“I heard you the first time.” I grumbled. “What do you want to show me?”He gave me a blank stare for a couple of seconds before rolling his eyes. “Would you pipe down first?”I folded my arms, staring me down in hopes of whatever he had in mind eventually spilling. Sadly, Lucian had always been a tough nut to crack.“Is this you rejecting my proposal?” he finally said after a moment of silence.I pondered on the thought for a second before letting out a sigh. “Don’t say it like that. Makes it sound like an actual proposal.”I half-expected some sort of sarcastic or grumpy reply. But so far, nothing. He simply stared, eyes scouring through my face like he was searching for something. Then they dropped to my abdomen, and my stomach churned instantly. Was this about the scars? I knew he wasn’t over them just yet. I opened my mouth, about to come up with an excuse as to why I didn’t think going out would be a good idea.“Come wit

VIOLETThe body always remembers. It never forgets, regardless of how much time seemingly passes, or how long it had been since the incident occurred. It always remembers.“Is this okay, Luna?”I turned my attention to the little girl standing in front of me. Dokcha. She was one of the pups in the pack, just reaching three years old. In her hands was a crayon drawing of a sun with a bunch of stick people raising their hands up to the sky.“Oh, it’s lovely.” I cooed. “Mind drawing me another one?”She nodded vigorously. “Yes!”All too happily, she went back to her workbench, excitedly fishing out a red crayon. I let out a breath, eyes preening over the other pups in the playroom.Viola and Jax had settled with keeping themselves busy with some Lego. Suzuru was more of the quiet one, seemingly satisfied with the toy horse in her hands. I’d taken it upon myself to come to the estate. It was getting a bit uncomfortable at the main house. Not because anybody was making me feel that way. I

LUCIAN“I don’t know man. Maybe it’s something she just wants to put behind her.”Zayn shrugged, eyes watching me carefully. I barely gave him a glance too focused on the papers he’d brought me.He’d done a pretty good job at digging up what I asked him to find. It was paper after paper of evidence. Evidence of what they’d done to her, maltreatment and what not.Zayn went on. “I’ll hand it to them. They did a pretty good job at keeping it all under wraps.”I let out a grunt, eyes skimming through the one paper in hand. Something gnawed at my stomach as I read through the lines. Group attacks meted out on those they deemed ‘omegas’. Weaklings.Unfortunately for Violet, she classified as one. Her wolf wasn’t as big as most were. I’d noticed during the tag game. It just wouldn’t make sense if I had stared so much. But she—she faced so much belittlement at West Creak for it.“Ran away from the pack due to being unable to accept rejection. Currently facing charges of Treason.” I read some

VIOLETHe saw them.I’d sworn I’d do my best to keep him from seeing them but somehow, he did. Well, those three words had been on repeat since the past day.As soon as we’d gotten back, I’d immediately hurried to my room. Reese had been worried, asking if her brother had done something and if she needed to handle stuff.“I’m fine really,” I’d tried to assure her.I wasn’t fine. Not in the slightest. He’d seen them. All this time I’d done a pretty good job of hiding the scars and this one time, I somehow slipped.“Fucking idiot.” I cursed myself as I peeled an orange into a bowl.My mind was barely there. All that ran through my head was the image of Lucian staring down at the scars. The very injuries I’d be branded with back at West Creak. I’d done my best for crying out loud. Did everything I could to stay invincible. All I asked was that they let me breathe. But I doubt I deserved that.To them, I was but a mutt who didn’t even deserve to live. I shook my head, trying to push those
