Chapter 4

Author: Mountain River
At that moment, I found the whole thing absurdly laughable. Was the Castellano family really going to fire anyone who defended me?

I patted Maximo's shoulder and whispered in his ear, "It's fine. The Castellanos won't last much longer anyway. Go home and wait. Someone will offer you a better-paying job soon."

Maximo shot me a grateful look, nodded hard, and then turned and left quickly.

Valentina clearly had no intention of letting me off the hook. She shoved me out into the main hall, waved that receipt in the air, and shrieked at an ear-splitting pitch.

"I suspect Benedetta has been using family resources to embezzle assets and even sell intelligence to enemy forces! Anyone who can produce evidence of her betraying the family gets promoted to manager of the core casino immediately!"

The hall fell dead silent. No one spoke up, and no one stepped forward.

After all, she had zero credibility. Meanwhile, I, the Fortune Consigliere, had actually made real money for everyone.

After a few tense minutes, a sleazy-looking man crept out from the corner. Dante Caruso, a capo who'd tried to harass me more than once—a complete scumbag.

He rubbed his hands together and sidled up to Valentina with a fawning expression.

"Signorina Accardi, I've noticed some things! Benedetta wears a million-dollar watch every day, always has the latest phone, and gets delivery after delivery. Where does a woman like her get all that money? She must be stealing from the family!"

Valentina's eyes lit up when she heard this. "I knew something was fishy! How could someone like her afford top-tier luxury goods? She's got dirty hands for sure!"

She whirled around and barked orders at the soldati behind her. "Get her! Hold her down and strip-search her! I want to see what other stolen goods she's hiding!"

Watching the soldati close in, I gritted my teeth and explained, "Those things were gifts from business partners!"

"Liar!" she cut me off immediately. "Why would business partners give you such expensive things? You think I'm stupid? You clearly stole family money!"

She made a single gesture, and four hulking men lunged at me all at once. Before I could even resist, they pinned me to the ground like a criminal awaiting execution.

My bag was violently ripped open. The gemstone necklace Antonio had given me slid out and clattered to the floor. Valentina bent down, picked up the necklace, and trembled with excitement.

"Caught red-handed! A sapphire necklace of this quality costs at least eight figures! A peasant like you couldn't afford this even if you worked your whole life!"

She looked down at me with a smile that was both vicious and satisfied. "Today, I'm cleaning house for the Castellano family. I'll show you what happens to traitors!"

Before she even finished speaking, she grabbed a fistful of my hair and slapped me twice, hard. Her sharp nails tore across my cheek, and blood ran down my chin. The metallic taste filled my nose.

That still didn't satisfy her. Valentina pulled out a pair of scissors she'd prepared in advance, flashed a triumphant smile, and slashed toward my face.

"I'm going to ruin your face! Let's see what you use to seduce men after this!"

The blade cut into my flesh, and searing pain exploded instantly. Cold sweat poured down my body as I convulsed uncontrollably.

A few family members who'd always been friendly with me couldn't stand watching anymore. They quietly sent out an SOS to the boss, Marco Castellano, who'd just returned to the country.

I forced myself through the agony and glared at her, forcing words through my throat. "That was a gift from Antonio Lombardi! Valentina, you have no authority to punish me like this! I demand to see the boss!"

"Don't you dare throw the boss' name at me! Around here, my word is law!"

She leaned in closer, her eyes glinting with cold malice.

"What's that look in your eyes? Are you cursing me in your head? How dare you disrespect me, the future Donna!

"I heard you love sleeping. Shredding your bed probably wasn't enough. I'm going to blind you right now so you can sleep forever!"

She raised the blood-dripping scissors and aimed straight for my eyes. My limbs were pinned down tight, and I couldn't move.

All I could do was watch helplessly as the sharp point grew closer and closer in my vision. At the critical moment, the door burst open with a crash.

"Stop right there!"

I forced down the urge to smile and coughed dramatically, putting on a thoughtful expression."Well, I am at the age where I should think about my future. My parents keep pressuring me to go back. They say they've arranged a marriage alliance for me. I suppose I should consider it."The moment those words left my mouth, Lorenzo's carefully maintained composure crumbled. He grabbed my hand tightly, his eyes filled with panic."No! Absolutely not! You haven't even met them. That kind of marriage will never make you happy!"I couldn't help laughing. I teased, "What? Does the Romano family have rules against getting married?"Lorenzo froze, then realized I was messing with him. He sighed helplessly, but his eyes became more serious than ever. He looked at me like he was making a vow."Benedetta, I've liked you for a long time. Will you be my girlfriend?"I only hesitated for three seconds before nodding decisively. Where else would I find a man this handsome, powerful, influential,

I didn't hesitate and agreed with a nod. I'd heard that underworld balls not only featured the finest wines but also offered chances to meet all kinds of people. This was the perfect opportunity to expand my network. That evening, Lorenzo sent over several haute couture gowns from Melania along with matching jewelry. I chose a deep red velvet gown paired with coordinating diamond accessories. When Lorenzo took my hand and led me into the magnificent ballroom, the previously noisy venue fell instantly silent, followed by countless curious stares. Among those gazes, I caught two particularly hostile ones filled with jealousy and malice.Sure enough, I spotted Marco and Valentina. After just half a month, Marco looked ten years older. Though his suit was expensive, it seemed like it hadn't been properly maintained in a while.Valentina wore last season's sequined dress. Surrounded by socialites in current haute couture, she looked particularly shabby. They stared at me like they want

Valentina trembled with rage, tears pooling in her eyes. But under Marco's unwavering glare, she could only grit her teeth and mumble quickly like a mosquito, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have hit you or slashed your face with scissors."Satisfaction bloomed in my chest, but I deliberately tilted my ear and said dramatically, "What did you just say, Signorina Accardi? I didn't catch a single word."Valentina looked ready to explode. She glared at me viciously, the veins in her neck bulging as she roared word by word, "I said I'm sorry! I shouldn't have hit you! Please come back to the Castellano family!"Her voice was loud enough that even passersby on the street turned to look. I nodded with satisfaction. That sound was music to my ears. Both Marco's and Valentina's expressions relaxed considerably when they saw me nod. They thought I'd given in. Marco immediately pulled out a document, his face plastered with a warm smile."Benedetta, this is a new 'lifetime loyalty contract' I drew

When Valentina saw Marco, she beamed at him. "Darling, I just saw a ten-carat pink diamond necklace. It's only 30 million dollars. Can you transfer the money to me?"Marco's heart seized when he heard that figure. He frowned. "Didn't you just buy a haute couture jewelry set in Maris last week?"Valentina pouted in dissatisfaction. "Those are all last season's old pieces. I want something unique and new."Even trash like Benedetta gets to wear royal sapphires. I'm your fiancee. I can't let her outshine me, can I?"She should have left well enough alone. The moment she mentioned my name, Marco's rage flared beyond control."You have the nerve to bring her up? Do you have any idea how much the family has lost because you drove her away? In just three days, we've lost seven core partners and three casinos!"This was the first time Valentina had seen Marco this furious. Her face went pale, her voice trembling. "Marco, what's wrong? You've never been this harsh with me before…"Seeing

Marco's brows furrowed, his eyes vicious enough to devour someone. "20 million dollars? Benedetta, you've got quite an appetite!""Don't want to pay?" I shrugged indifferently and waved my phone."If I send the other mafia families news about the Castellano family trying to welch on its debts, along with this recording and video of Valentina's assault, you'd be in deep trouble. Wouldn't you?"Marco's face turned ashen with rage. The veins in his neck bulged as he snarled at Maximo, "Give it to her! Transfer 20 million dollars now! Get her out of here!"Valentina's eyes went wide as she shrieked, "Marco! How can you give her that much money? She was planning to leave the family anyway! We don't owe her a single cent!"Marco whipped around, shocked. "Why didn't you tell me that earlier?"I'd worked for the Castellano family for five years, so taking this money and leaving was completely reasonable. After receiving the bank transfer notification, I grinned at the pair of them."I'v

Nico had already reported to Marco that I was blessed by the god of fortune.Although Marco was a science-minded dictator who didn't buy into that sort of thing, he'd maintained a surface level of respect for my abilities given that I brought in billions of dollars in net profit for the family every year.He frowned and strode over. He snatched the scissors from Valentina's hand and tossed them aside. "Valentina, what are you doing? Family members don't hurt each other."The moment Valentina saw him, her vicious expression instantly switched to a wounded look. Tears came on command."Marco, this backstabbing bitch was caught making dirty money behind the family's back! Not only did she refuse to admit it, but she even tried to hit me. I just panicked for a moment and wanted to scare her…"Hearing this, Marco turned to look at me, his gaze dark. "How did you find out?"Valentina held up the sapphire necklace like a trophy. "I found this on her! Royal jewelry of this quality? The
