Riley’s POV

Grandpa Nick pulls Ainsley’s limp body out of the truck. In his huge arms, she looks like a baby. She’s really out of it, covered in blood, pale, and sweating profusely.

“I-I’m sorry, Sir. I thought she was right behind me.” My head swims, making me sway and stumble as I try to keep up.

“Come inside, Riley.” He walks up the front steps without looking back.

The school nurse is inside with Grandma Jane. “Nurse Gomez?”

“Hello, Riley. Are you hurt, dear?” Nurse Gomez asks, but follows Grandpa Nick.

“No, ma’am. Ainsley was attacked by dogs, though.” I look past her at Grandpa who is already halfway up the stairs.

Guilt chases away the numbness of the alcohol and floods my chest. Hearing Ainsley whimper in pain makes it feel like someone is squeezing my heart. I’m supposed to protect her. I promised Grandpa I would when I was in first grade.

“Wait here, Riley.” She says urgently, following Grandma Jane up the stairs.

The three of them go into Ainsley’s room and shut the door.

“What the fuck?” The blood drains from my face. “Lucas...”“Mom?” Beckett gasps.“Beckett, go clean up. You and Charlotte can wait in the hospital wing together.” As soon as Beckett is gone, Lucas squats next to me. “What’s wrong, Maggie?”I put the phone on speaker. “Dad, c-can you repeat that for Lucas?”Lucas looks at me in disbelief while Dad recalls the story.“Nick, you won’t believe this.” Lucas swallows hard and tells him what happened to Caleb.“Lucas, did anything like this ever happen to Cameron? Absorbing part of Ansel’s injuries?” Dad asks.“To some extent. We were used to it though.” Lucas shakes his head. “The week Ansel died was the absolute worst. We thought Cam was gonna die too.”“That could explain why an attack from an Alpha wolf didn’t kill Ainsley.” Dad sounds like he’s deep in thought. “I thought their connection ended when she moved here. Now, I’m not so sure. Maggie, their connection must be getting stronger. Just like Cameron and Ansel. They’re a bit younger

“If you didn’t tell him, who did?” I drum the steering wheel of the fleet truck.“I don’t know, but I’m grounded, too. I have a month in the kitchen.” Beckett grumbles. “What are we going to tell Dario?”“Don’t worry. We’ll still get the big bag job done.” I run my fingers through my hair. “I’ll let him know we’re gonna be delayed.”“Tell him two g’s off the bag.” Becks huffs. We pull up to the lake and drag coolers of soda to the picnic area. Someone has already started the bonfire on the beach and tapped a keg. Someone hands me a cup of beer. I grab a soda from the cooler instead. There’s no way I’m getting caught drinking tonight. I sit on the beach against a log near the firepit and sip my sugary, refreshing, innocent, boring, lame ass orange soda.“Cal, are you swimming with us?” Charli appears, brushing my cheek with her fingers. It’s her way of telling me she forgives me, but I haven’t forgiven myself yet. She smells like she’s been drinking. I’m not having a serious conversati

“Great job, Caleb. Personal best. Charlotte, good job! Make sure you’re pacing yourself.” Our pack trainer claps as we finish our five-mile run the next Saturday morning.“Caleb. My office. NOW!” Uncle Lucas’s voice booms across the lawn.I look over at Charli. She’s standing with her hands on her hips staring at me, confused.“What did you do?” She mouths at me.***“First skipping school and fist fights. Now I find out you’re working for Dario Capra, threatening humans. Not to mention taking part in illegal street racing. And dragging Beckett into it, too? Caleb, one more toe out of line and you’ll spend your senior year with a tutor in the packhouse!”“Uncle Lucas, it’s not that big a deal. You and Dad raced when you were our age.” I roll my eyes. “And Beckett wants to earn money.”“Don’t ‘Uncle Lucas’ me. You’re breaking laws. Werewolf AND human laws, Caleb. If you’re going to be the leader of this pack, you need to hold yourself accountable. Right now you’re not, and don’t you DA

Caleb’s POV“She’s gonna make us late again, man!” Beckett whines. “My Trig teacher won’t let me take the final if I show up late!”“Shut up, Becks. It’s not like I’m leaving her behind.” I throw an empty soda bottle at him.Charli jumps in the car and kisses my cheek. “Sorry! I had to find my lucky shirt.”“Where was it, Sunshine?” I admire the skin showing below her lilac crop top.“Under your bed.” She giggles. “I told your mom I forgot my Calculus book in your room.”“First of all, I don’t want to hear that shit, and second, Charlotte, you’re a walking encyclopedia.” Beckett complains. “You don’t need luck.”I gun my GT-R out of the garage and speed off to school. It was Dad’s car. Mom gave it to me when I turned sixteen. I just had to agree not to do boneheaded things like Dad used to do. I took it more as a suggestion because he wasn’t around to tell me what those things were.Chemistry is my last final, and holy shit, it’s brutal. Charli tried to help me study. Maybe if I hadn’

As soon as we walk in, we’re handed full cups of booze. A couple of Ainsley’s girlfriends pull her away. I find my buddies and, as promised, I get wasted. What can I say? I’m a man of my word.I don’t know how many rounds of shots we’ve had, but I’m swaying hard. Good thing I have this trusty countertop to hold me up.Sarah adds more vodka to my cup. I don’t even care that she’s leaning in with her fingers in my waistband.“Sarah? When did you get here?” I tilt my head to fight the double vision.“This is my house, Riley.” She giggles at me. “Maybe you forgot because you always go straight to my bedroom. We could go up there now if you really want?”She keeps trying to kiss me. I’m almost drunk enough to kiss her back. Almost. I shake my head and try to walk away. Her fingers grip my jeans and stop me. My friends laugh when I stumble, and they make kissy sounds at Sarah. She rolls her eyes and pulls me into the mudroom where it isn’t as loud, and closes the door. “I’m drunk. I-I gott
