**Shawn's POV**

The heat is punishing. I can feel my skin blistering, and my lungs protesting the superheated air. But I push forward, squinting against the brightness.

Bodies.

Three of Victor's men are down—Rodriguez, Santos, Martinez. Not moving. The explosion caught them full force.

But Victor—

I see him. Just inside the entrance, partially shielded by the doorframe. He is unconscious, his clothes smoking, but alive.

I don't think. Just act.

I grab his collar and drag him away from the inferno. He's heavy but adrenaline makes me strong. I haul him across the concrete, away from the flames.

When we're far enough, I lower him to the ground.

"Victor. VICTOR." I pat his face, checking for breath, for pulse.

He's breathing. Shallow but steady. His pulse is there but weak.

But his wounds—

Fuck.

Burns cover his arms, his chest. Blood seeps from a gash on his forehead. And unlike me, he's not healing. The wounds stay open, angry and red.

Which means the explosio

**Stella's POV** A few hours later, the water is perfect. Not too hot, not too cold—just warm enough to ease the pleasant ache in my muscles. I float on my back in the rooftop pool, staring up at the afternoon sky. The sun is starting its descent, painting everything in shades of gold and amber. This is exactly what I needed. Space to think. To process what just happened in my kitchen a few hours ago. Shawn left shortly after our... encounter to handle some business for my father. He gave me a lingering kiss, told me to rest, and walked out like he hadn't just rocked my entire world. Friends with benefits. The term still feels foreign on my tongue. I've never had anything like that before. With Cole, everything was bound by marriage, duty, and obligation. But this? This is supposed to be simple. Uncomplicated. Just physical. Except it doesn't feel simple.... I can still feel the ghost of Shawn's hands on my skin when I close my eyes. I can see the way he looked

**Stella's POV** "Good girl." The praise sends another thrill through me, and I hate how much I like it. Shawn's hands make quick work of my leggings, sliding them down my legs along with my underwear. The cool air hits my heated skin, and I instinctively try to close my legs. He stops me with a gentle but firm grip. "Don't hide from me." "But—" "No buts." His eyes hold mine. "You're beautiful, Stella. Every inch of you. And I'm going to prove it." Before I can respond, his mouth is on mine again—hungrier this time, more demanding. His hands explore freely now, learning what makes me gasp, and what makes me arch into his touch. "Shawn," I moan. "That's it," he murmurs against my lips. "Say my name. Let me hear you." His fingers find me, and I cry out at the sensation. "So wet already," he groans. "Goddess, you're perfect." "Please," I hear myself begging, though I'm not sure what I'm asking for. "Please what?" His thumb circles that sensitive spot, making me whimper. "U

**Stella's POV** Shawn's kiss deepens, and I forget the complicated mess my life has become. All I can focus on is the way Shawn's lips move against mine, the way his hand tangles in my hair, the way my entire body feels like it's coming alive for the first time in years. This is different from the last time. Last time, I was in heat—desperate, out of control, driven by instinct rather than choice. But this? This is me making a conscious decision to want him. And that terrifies me almost as much as it excites me. "Shawn," I breathe against his mouth, but he swallows whatever I was going to say with another kiss. His hands slide down to my waist, pulling me closer to the edge of the stool, and I feel the evidence of his desire pressing against me. Heat floods through my body, pooling low in my belly. I should stop this and remind him that this is a terrible idea. But then his mouth moves to my neck, and all rational thought flies out the window. "Miss Matthews what we you

**Shawn's POV** The text has a photo of Vanessa attached to it. She is in lingerie. It's red and lacy and leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination. The accompanying text reads: [You know where to find me when you get tired of playing house with your omega. I'll be waiting. 🫦😘] Disgust rolls through me. I don't hesitate to press delete and block number. Goddess, I hate clingy delusional she-wolves... I'm about to pocket my phone when another message comes through. This one from a number I recognize. [Hey Shawn, Marcus's anniversary is coming up. Please let us meet so that Sofia can meet her uncle. ps, Thanks for saving us.] My hand tightens around the phone because I can't bring myself to meet Angela and Sofia even though they are the only family I have left. Marcus's death anniversary is in three days and every year, it hits me like a freight train. The memories. The guilt. The what-ifs that never stop circling. I stare at the message for a long moment. Then I typ

**Shawn's POV** Not her again! "Vanessa." Her name comes out flat, and emotionless. She smiles wider, completely oblivious to—or deliberately ignoring—the tension radiating from both Stella and me. "I've been trying to reach you for days since we last met," Vanessa says, her voice light and cheerful as she steps closer. "But you've been avoiding my calls. I was starting to think you were still mad at me." I don't respond and then Vanessa's eyes slide to Stella, taking in her casual clothes, her red-rimmed eyes, the way she's sitting so close to me. "Oh." Her smile turns sharp. "You're still with this one? I thought you'd have gotten bored by now." The air shifts immediately. I feel Stella stiffen beside me, and my jaw clenches so hard it aches. "Vanessa—" I start, warning clear in my tone. But she's not done. "I mean, no offense," Vanessa continues, her voice dripping with false sweetness as she addresses Stella directly. "But you don't exactly seem like Shawn's

**Shawn's POV** "He wanted me to be prepared," I correct. "To know how to protect myself if anything ever happened to him." The irony of that statement burns. "So he took you on a job," Stella says softly. I nod, and suddenly I'm not sitting on a park bench anymore. I'm back there. In that moment. [The flashback] "Stay in the car," Marcus says, checking his gun one final time. "I'll be in and out in five minutes. Ten at most." "Let me come with you," I argue, even though I know it's pointless. "I can help—" "No." His voice is firm. "You are not ready to witness what I do." I want to protest, but the look in his eyes stops me. "Understood," I mutter. He grips my shoulder, and for a moment, he looks almost... afraid. "If something goes wrong," he says quietly, "you drive away. You don't look back. You don't try to be a hero. You just drive." "Nothing's going to go wrong—" "Promise me, Shawn." I nod, throat tight. "I promise." He gives me one last look—so
