Don't Let Him Die

Great fear coursed through her as she ran with all her might.

The damned nightwalkers knew how to blend with the night so much that they could materialise out of it easily.

It was how they had pulled a fast one on Beta Lupo.

“I will kill you all!” Athena wailed in her mind.

I just need to survive first.

Fury bubbled within her, mingled with her throbbing grief and fear.

They would kill her.

She did not doubt that for a second.

She had seen them strike before, and they wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

“Wish I still had my wolf,” she thought mournfully as she felt the briars scratching her legs mercilessly.

Blood slipped down her legs into the sole of her sandals and made it slippery, yet she didn’t dare to stop.

Tears prickled her eyes as she remembered how her father’s beta and his soldiers had fought, and lost their lives for their trouble.

“You will pay! I swear on the moon goddess, you will pay!” she vowed even as her mother’s dying statement came to her.

“Hatred will poison you, Athena. Let go of it and live an ordinary, happy life.”

She swiped the tears off her face, smearing dirt on her porcelain skin as hatred burnt through her eyes.

“They wouldn’t let me, Mama. They will keep hunting me unless I fight!” she gritted through her teeth.

Her feet hit a stump in the semi-dark forest she had been made to escape into while her soldiers distracted the vampires.

Though she no longer had her wolf, she still felt each of their deaths keenly, like the blades and fangs were piercing through her.

“I swear, you will p…hey!” the outraged word ripped out of her, as something sent her tumbling into the copse of briars that she had been trying to avoid to no avail.

“Are you kidding me?!” she gritted out as fresh pain lanced through her body when the thorns pierced her skin.

Her dress ripped as she struggled to get up, even as she felt the chill in the air that sealed her fate.

They materialised out of the dark like the relentless vermin they were.

“Bold of you to think you can get away from us,” crooned one of them with a hideous chuckle that made his fangs gleam even in the dark.

“Too bad your lackeys had to die for nothing, little pet,”

The pain of her most recent loss, coupled with the grief of the past, made Athena’s fear turn ice-cold.

It lay like a coiled panther in her, as she lifted her head regally and said frigidly, “This little pet will be the end of you. I will enjoy sending every last one of you to the hell you belong to.”

Stunned silence followed her words, then the three vampires laughed mockingly.

The hateful sound caused goosebumps on Athena’s skin as blood trickled down her arm.

As if in salutation, a light breeze stirred through the forest, ruffling the jagged edges of her tattered gown.

“Damned shifters and their spunk. I believe I will enjoy breaking you, little thing,” said the one to her right as he bared his fangs.

“I am taking you down with me,” Athena thought as the mockery stoked her anger even more.

“No, our instructions are clear,” said the one in the middle. “We are to…”

“Stay away from her!”

The voice boomed through the woods, and for a moment, Athena’s heart leapt as she thought Beta Lupo survived after all.

Disappointment filled her as she saw the features of the young man in the thin moonlight.

He was no Beta Lupo.

This man was younger, closer to her own age and very handsome.

Though Athena was certain she might still die that night, something stirred in her blood at the thought of the stranger stepping up for her.

A knight who was probably a human and would get himself killed just like the rest.

Not tonight.

“Keep going. This is none of your business,” she snapped, hoping he would get the idea and leave.

“Yeah, you heard the chit. Beat it,” said the vampire with the irritating chuckle.

The man barely glanced at her as he made to leave.

Athena wondered at the disappointment she felt even though that was what she wanted him to do.

The next moment, her thoughts backed up in her throat as she felt strong hands on her arms.

She bit back a yelp as she was lifted from the bush of thorns.

His body jerked against her as their skin touched, and sudden warmth flushed through her.

“Mate, run!” He growled in a warm tone before he let go of her.

Did he just call her…?

In split seconds, she was behind him, and he was blocking the vampires’ way to her.

Realising they had underestimated him as she had, the vampires advanced on him.

“I told you to stay away from her!” His growl turned to a howl as he shifted into a gorgeous golden wolf with a silver mane.

The wolf spared her a brief look before it jumped at the circling vampires.

The message was clear. Run!

Athena could see that more vampires had slunk out of the shadows to attack.

She longed to stand by his side to fight the bastards who had taken so much from her.

And knew she would die for her troubles.

“Go!” The command came clear in her mind as the wolf lunged amidst the vampires’ lethal dance.

Athena tamped down the shame that threatened to drown her.

And she fled.

“Please, don't let him die,” she sent a prayer to the moon goddess.

The same one she had stopped praying to since that terrible night.

The savoury scents wafted towards Lorraine’s nose, making her stomach growl embarrassingly even as her body reacted to it.He washed his hands with the bowl of water in the second compartment of the cart, wiped them, then lifted one of the toasts to her mouth. When Lorraine blinked at him blankly, he said impatiently, “You said you are not allergic to anything.”“Yes,” she breathed as her brain finally caught up. “But that does not mean I trust you enough to eat anything you…”“If I wanted you dead, Gamma, I would have easily snapped your neck,” he said testily.Lorraine bristled. “Try it.”“I could. Then you would be dead. Then your queen, who thinks she is human, would never learn the truth. Who knows? I might kill her too. Depends on my mood.”Lorraine’s eyes blazed at that, protective fury shooting adrenaline into her system. She opened her mouth to say something, and he cramm

She inhaled and exhaled dramatically, her ears primed to the sounds coming from the room, which made her hate her condition more. Her queen alpha was giving birth to the future alphas, and she could not be by her side because she was about to dissolve into a puddle like a fainting ninny. She could not deny the fact that leaning back against the wall made her feel slightly better, though.“Maybe I can order something, pretend to take that walk and pick it up?” she wondered, knowing that with her weakening state, she might not even be able to do anything if he decided to play any tricks. That would not do. She straightened and snapped her fingers at him. “Give me my phone.”He frowned at her hand, and she did not realise his intent in time until he held her wrist and announced gravely, “You are trembling.”Lorraine looked down, and to her mortification, he was right. The trembling was minimal, but holding her hand made him feel it more. She jerked her wrist out of his hand, and that s

Kiara sounded confused as she responded, “No, I do not think so. There is something wrong with his wolf. I cannot feel him clearly, so I cannot say. But I feel a connection to him, Lorraine. More than I ever felt with any other. He could be our mate.”“Stop. Just stop saying that!” Lorraine snapped at her wolf in her mind.“Kam, are you okay? You look peaked,” Sonia’s threadbare voice pulled Lorraine out of her warring mind.Shame washed over Lorraine at the fact that she was still causing the queen worries when she was supposed to be there for support. The alpha-consort could not be by his mate’s side as he should be, so Lorraine was all the queen had.“And here I am losing it because of my wolf’s silly ideas.”“Yes, yes. I am fine,” Lorraine said hurriedly, swallowing the bile threatening to climb up her throat as she chafed Sonia’s hands comfortingly.“She is right, miss. You do not look so good,” Greta added.“When I need your opinion, I will ask for it. Since that is not happeni

Under different circumstances, Lorraine might have gaped in admiration at the splendour of the mansion that awaited them. At the moment, she barely glanced at the stone-bricked, three-storey mansion as the car squealed to a stop. Before Damien could do it, Lorraine scooped Sonia up and raced up the steps leading to the massive porch.“Where are the damn midwives?” She snapped breathlessly. More nervous about the queen’s condition than winded because of her weight. The contractions were coming so close right now, and the queen grew whiter and whiter as her fingers ground hard against Lorraine’s. She had stopped trying to talk altogether and just breathed through the contractions as sweat and tears slicked her face.Lorraine wished her wolf was awake at the moment, as Morrigan would have helped her better through the childbirth, which would have reduced all the pains she was feeling as a human.“Right here.” Damien led the way, and Logan took the rear. Sonia looked disoriented as she tried to keep her eyes open. She started to say something, then her eyes flew open as the pain on her face increased. “Argh! Kamara. I think… I think the baby is coming. I…” “What? Now?! I… okay… I will get you to the hospital.” Panic overtook Lorraine’s calmness. “Argh! The contractions… they…” Sonia’s eyes widened as she finally registered their immediate environment. “Is that… is that cherries I smell? What are we doing here, Kam? We were just at home and… argh!” Her hand tightened against Lorraine’s, grinding bone against bone. Her eyes flew open again even before the contraction passed. Horror bloomed in her jade eyes, and she almost tumbled out of Lorraine’s arms as her body acted in a reflexive memory of struggle. She did not see the man who automatically added his weight to Lorraine’s to prevent a headfirst tumble. Her eyes looked glazed as they seemed locked on faraway images. “The window! They burst right through… she came… through the do

“None of your business,” she responded curtly. He was unfazed as he tilted his head and said, “You tried to keep it low, but I could have sworn I heard you call her…” “Give me my phone!” She interrupted him before he could say what would result in more questions. He looked at the phone like he had just realised he had it. Then he looked at the woman in her arms. “She needs care. You both need a place safer than that matchbox of a house. I can help.” “I don’t need your help,” she snapped. She turned away, ready to hike. But the burning questions made her turn right back to him with blazing eyes. “While we are talking about your big help, who were you ‘helping’ when you lured me away from the house? Did you also kill Salome in your big act of ‘helping’? And yeah, let’s not forget them!” She jerked her thumb towards the bodies in the vineyard. “Was killing them a change of plans in your ‘helping’ act? I suppose I should fall on my knees to thank you now, right?! What the fuck do
