The woods shook as a heart-wrenching howl rippled through the silvery-white wolf.

“Something bad has happened.” The words snaked through the young heart as the wolf changed to a girl.

Athena Reed did not need the words to know her world would never be the same again.

“Ma!” the gangly eighteen-year-old screamed as she stumbled over the porch with muddied feet.

Light spilt through the open door onto the porch and bathed Athena’s naked body.

Her changing clothes lay forgotten in the shed.

She dashed inside as she dodged the discarded furniture in her path.

The family portrait hung drunkenly on one hinge, angry slashes destroying the happy family within.

“Pa!” Athena screamed once again as she stumbled over a broken glass table. Broken shards of glass dug into her upper body, but she didn’t feel it.

Her eyes had fixated on something just below the staircase.

A crumpled body that looked more like a rag doll.

“Ky…Kyle!”

The child who would never know the thrills of getting his wolf stared through jade green eyes that mirrored hers.

No, this cannot be happening. He was just bugging her hours ago!

“Kyle!” She gripped his cold body as she rose from the floor.

“Mmm… Maurice!” Her breath trembled out as she saw her brother on the staircase, a few paces from where his wife and child lay.

Her wolf howled in her chest again, with the crippling pain sipping into her bones as she staggered up the stairs with her nephew in her arms.

Maurice and Sarah were far beyond help, just like their son.

There was an eeriness to her once-warm home that made Athena’s limbs quake as she climbed the stairs.

She didn’t realise she was crying until she saw the tears plop on Kyle’s face.

“I am so sorry, Kyle,” trembled through her lips just before she tripped on the landing.

She rolled and protected Kyle’s head from hitting the floor, taking the brunt of the fall on her back.

The pain stunned her for a moment, and she felt wetness against her cheek.

Wet. Red. Blond hair and a gash in the face.

It took Athena a second to realise that she was staring at what used to be the face of her dad, the beloved Alpha of Moonvale.

“Pa…papa!” She scrambled up, still holding on to her nephew. “Mama!” Her tears came in torrents as she saw her parents entwined in death, just as they had been most of the time in life.

“Pa, please wake up! Ma, look what they did to Kyle!” she screamed deliriously as she crawled towards her parents.

Shards on the floor dug into her knees, leaving a bloody trail.

Her frenzied mind kicked in, and she quickly hid the boy behind her. “No, you shouldn’t see him like this!”

Her father’s face was bashed in with a silver dagger buried in his chest.

Her mother did not fare better as blood trickled sluggishly out of the punctured holes in her neck.

The blood gave the red hair Athena inherited a grotesque sheen.

Fangs!

A hint of warmth still clung to the two of them, fading fast as she reached for them.

“Who did this?!” Athena shrieked with rage as she buried her face between her parents, shaking them in her overwhelming grief.

“Tell me who did this to you?!”

“Moon goddess, why?!”

“Athena”, the thready whisper penetrated her mind-link, and she jerked upward in shock.

******

Outside the three-storey Georgian-style house, a lone figure ran towards the wrapped porch.

Great grief sluiced through him, and he could feel his heart breaking just as that of the one linked to him.

As his feet hit the porch, a threadbare, familiar voice came through the mind-link.

“Stay away from my Athena”,

Two uniformed staff with covered trays on a service cart.“Alpha”, they both bowed and opened the trays. The savoury scents wafted towards Lorraine’s nose, making her stomach growl embarrassingly even as her body reacted to it.He washed his hands with the bowl of water in the second compartment of the cart, wiped them, then lifted one of the toasts to her mouth. When Lorraine blinked at him blankly, he said impatiently, “You said you are not allergic to anything.”“Yes,” she breathed as her brain finally caught up. “But that does not mean I trust you enough to eat anything you…”“If I wanted you dead, Gamma, I would have easily snapped your neck,” he said testily.Lorraine bristled. “Try it.”“I could. Then you would be dead. Then your queen, who thinks she is human, would never learn the truth. Who knows? I might kill her too. Depends on my mood.”Lorraine’s eyes blazed at that, protective fury shooting adrenaline into her system. She opened her mouth to say something, and he cramm

She inhaled and exhaled dramatically, her ears primed to the sounds coming from the room, which made her hate her condition more. Her queen alpha was giving birth to the future alphas, and she could not be by her side because she was about to dissolve into a puddle like a fainting ninny. She could not deny the fact that leaning back against the wall made her feel slightly better, though.“Maybe I can order something, pretend to take that walk and pick it up?” she wondered, knowing that with her weakening state, she might not even be able to do anything if he decided to play any tricks. That would not do. She straightened and snapped her fingers at him. “Give me my phone.”He frowned at her hand, and she did not realise his intent in time until he held her wrist and announced gravely, “You are trembling.”Lorraine looked down, and to her mortification, he was right. The trembling was minimal, but holding her hand made him feel it more. She jerked her wrist out of his hand, and that s

Kiara sounded confused as she responded, “No, I do not think so. There is something wrong with his wolf. I cannot feel him clearly, so I cannot say. But I feel a connection to him, Lorraine. More than I ever felt with any other. He could be our mate.”“Stop. Just stop saying that!” Lorraine snapped at her wolf in her mind.“Kam, are you okay? You look peaked,” Sonia’s threadbare voice pulled Lorraine out of her warring mind.Shame washed over Lorraine at the fact that she was still causing the queen worries when she was supposed to be there for support. The alpha-consort could not be by his mate’s side as he should be, so Lorraine was all the queen had.“And here I am losing it because of my wolf’s silly ideas.”“Yes, yes. I am fine,” Lorraine said hurriedly, swallowing the bile threatening to climb up her throat as she chafed Sonia’s hands comfortingly.“She is right, miss. You do not look so good,” Greta added.“When I need your opinion, I will ask for it. Since that is not happeni

Under different circumstances, Lorraine might have gaped in admiration at the splendour of the mansion that awaited them. At the moment, she barely glanced at the stone-bricked, three-storey mansion as the car squealed to a stop. Before Damien could do it, Lorraine scooped Sonia up and raced up the steps leading to the massive porch.“Where are the damn midwives?” She snapped breathlessly. More nervous about the queen’s condition than winded because of her weight. The contractions were coming so close right now, and the queen grew whiter and whiter as her fingers ground hard against Lorraine’s. She had stopped trying to talk altogether and just breathed through the contractions as sweat and tears slicked her face.Lorraine wished her wolf was awake at the moment, as Morrigan would have helped her better through the childbirth, which would have reduced all the pains she was feeling as a human.“Right here.” Damien led the way, and Logan took the rear. The big man flung the doors o

Sonia looked disoriented as she tried to keep her eyes open. She started to say something, then her eyes flew open as the pain on her face increased. “Argh! Kamara. I think… I think the baby is coming. I…” “What? Now?! I… okay… I will get you to the hospital.” Panic overtook Lorraine’s calmness. “Argh! The contractions… they…” Sonia’s eyes widened as she finally registered their immediate environment. “Is that… is that cherries I smell? What are we doing here, Kam? We were just at home and… argh!” Her hand tightened against Lorraine’s, grinding bone against bone. Her eyes flew open again even before the contraction passed. Horror bloomed in her jade eyes, and she almost tumbled out of Lorraine’s arms as her body acted in a reflexive memory of struggle. She did not see the man who automatically added his weight to Lorraine’s to prevent a headfirst tumble. Her eyes looked glazed as they seemed locked on faraway images. “The window! They burst right through… she came… through the do

“None of your business,” she responded curtly. He was unfazed as he tilted his head and said, “You tried to keep it low, but I could have sworn I heard you call her…” “Give me my phone!” She interrupted him before he could say what would result in more questions. He looked at the phone like he had just realised he had it. Then he looked at the woman in her arms. “She needs care. You both need a place safer than that matchbox of a house. I can help.” “I don’t need your help,” she snapped. She turned away, ready to hike. But the burning questions made her turn right back to him with blazing eyes. “While we are talking about your big help, who were you ‘helping’ when you lured me away from the house? Did you also kill Salome in your big act of ‘helping’? And yeah, let’s not forget them!” She jerked her thumb towards the bodies in the vineyard. “Was killing them a change of plans in your ‘helping’ act? I suppose I should fall on my knees to thank you now, right?! What the fuck do
