He Is Different

Athena woke up with a thrumming headache that threatened to send her back to the darkness.

The light filtering through the drapes hurt her eyes, and she knew it was morning.

It had been dark when she went under. Now it’s morning, and…

Something niggled at the edge of her mind, only to slip away as she tried to grasp it.

Her headache increased from her efforts, and she sagged back against the bed.

Every single part of her body that she could feel hurt so much that she wanted to close her eyes back.

But then her eyes caught on her unfamiliar surroundings, and she reluctantly opened it again.

She was lying on a narrow bed that seemed like she would fall off it if she turned too hastily.

“Damn it. It hurts so bad,” she gritted out as she sat up.

One of the downsides of her wolf dying was that she no longer healed as fast as she used to.

Beta Lupo said he had never heard of a wolf dying of grief, but it seemed that was what had happened to Athena.

The pack doctor had agreed too, before the second attack which wiped out all members of her pack.

Beta Lupo took the remaining soldiers and had them safeguard Athena out of the pack.

They had not gone far before the bastards caught up with them.

It was almost like someone was feeding them information.

“Guard the alpha’s blood with your life!” He had roared as a charge to the soldiers as he shifted.

Tears stung Athena’s eyes as she remembered how the silver had pierced his heart.

The soldiers had forced her to run like a coward, as they tried their best to protect her.

“A lot of good that did them. A lot of good that did anyone!”

She was beginning to think the moon goddess must be a sadist.

How else would she have allowed all this suffering while she looked on like it was none of her concern?

Athena had a lot to say to the moon goddess whenever they met, which was going to be very soon anyways if the vampires had their way.

Her heart tripped as she remembered what had been niggling at the edge of her mind.

“The man!”

Her feet had landed on the floor before she knew what she was doing.

Pinpricks of pain lanced through her feet immediately.

“Ouch!” she yelled before she could hold herself back.

She cradled her leg as the thoughts of the night before came flooding back.

No, he wasn't a human. He was a werewolf. A powerful one, if his speed was any judge.

Still, he had been surrounded by vampires when she ran, and he was probably dead by…

The door opened, and a brunette entered.

Her white lab coat gaped at the front to show the green top underneath it.

She had on grey pants underneath her coat, and her curly hair was packed atop her head, where a few strands trickled down to tease her dainty ears.

“I see you are finally with us,” the lady said as she came closer.

“Is he dead?” Athena blurted out.

The doctor's warm smile dimmed as she got closer and asked, “Is who dead?”

What the… “Don't play dumb with me. I told you…they…them what happened, and they promised. They promised they were going to help. They didn't, did they? Where am I?” She ended in frustration as the doctor moved closer to her.

“Here, let me help you adjust that,” she said as she reached for the IV transfusion that Athena had barely noticed in her agitation.

When Athena stiffened against her hand, the lady said kindly, “You need to rest. You lost a lot of blood, and those bruises are not healing up yet.”

“Just…”

“He is not dead.”

Athena’s shoulders sagged with such relief that the doctor was able to ease her back effortlessly.

“Not all. Not everyone who helps me dies,” came the unbidden thought.

She suddenly looked at the doctor's brown eyes as her hand clenched against the white coat. “You are not lying to me? He is okay?”

Alarm rang in her mind as she saw a look crossed the doctor's eyes as she started to say, “He…”

“There you are.” The voice came from the door, and Athena quickly looked over.

She cast a baffled look at the doctor as she remembered the almost sad look she just saw on her face.

It was almost as if something had happened to him.

“I must have imagined it,” Athena thought as she looked back at the young man who was almost beside the bed.

“It's you. You saved me.” Athena breathed in heartfelt gratitude as she felt a lump in her throat.

He was alive. He was alive and well, without so much as a scratch on him.

He had looked outnumbered last night, yet here he was looking so fresh and unmarked, like he had not just fought those nightwalkers on her behalf.

“You saved me. You didn't have to, but you saved me.” She murmured as she blinked back the embarrassing tears that wanted to escape her.

Every other person who had fought to protect her did not stay alive long enough for her to thank them.

Yet there he was. Alive and well.

“Yes, I did,” he said in a cheery tone that had Athena blinking. “I mean, how can I leave a beautiful lady like you all alone in the midst of those damn bloodsuckers? You really shouldn't worry your pretty head about that. It is what I do. Saving damsels,” he completed with a wink.

A frown marred Athena’s brow as she thought she must have been really banged up the night before to think him different.

He had seemed more…steady to her then. But this man was what she would call slick, with his shiny shoes, carefree attitude, and a charming smile that Athena would have probably found cute under different circumstances.

She blinked as she saw his earlobe.

Was that a… “Yeah, definitely. My mate pierced his ears.”

“Like what you see?”

Athena recovered from her gawking when he said that in an amused tone that almost seemed mocking to her.

“Stop finding faults,” she scolded herself before saying, “You are my mate.”

Athena was sure she was not imagining it this time.

The shock on his face was clear as his smile died.

“What?”

“He is lying. He is lying,” Lorraine told herself, even as her feet wanted to automatically move away from him. He might be bluffing, but she was certain of one thing for sure. He was a very dangerous man.And if he was really here to finish the queen off, then she needed to make sure he got as far away as possible from her.“Stop calling me that,” she said in a soft voice.“Calling you what? Sweetheart? Darling?” He repeated deliberately, even as a faint V formed between his brows because of the sudden change in her tone.Lorraine forced her body to relax and hoped she came off as intended. She let her eyes drag slowly down his body, slightly biting her lip as her eyes rose to meet his again. “I know you probably can’t get much action in this sleepy suburb. But you are not so desperate that you are hung up on a pregnant woman, are you?”Something glinted in his eyes, thawing the coldness, as his smirk came back with vengeance. “Are you offering?” he drawled.“Well…”His hand shot

Just as she had suspected, it was the man from earlier. He stood with his hands in his pockets, legs wide apart and an arrogant smirk she wanted to punch off his smug face. His shirt fitted snugly against his well-sculpted body, and Lorraine knew those muscles were built more for strength than aesthetics. She briefly wondered if she could take him on and win, but she knew that for her queen, she would do anything to keep the bastard down. His face was just as sharply carved as his body. A chin as edged as a blade, and a shaggy brow over eyes that reminded her of a cunning cat.The tilt of his lips curved upward more as he detected her subtle once-over.Deciding not to waste her breath on long talks, her words rolled out frostily in question, “Who are you and what do you want?”“Wow,” he patted his chest as if he was hurt, even as his eyes hardened without moving from hers. “Things must be done so differently where you are from. I want to believe that is the only reason a mere gamma

Lorraine looked back at the house with guilt throbbing in her heart. The past few weeks had taken their toll on her. Not because she had turned into a caretaker for her queen. But because of the truths she could not dare to utter. Because of the lies, she had to back up with more. Because, in trying to protect Her Majesty, she had deceived her.As much as her wolf wanted to respond automatically in obedience to Athena, it was confused because of the sudden absence of the higher wolf, Morrigan. Lorraine had ensured they went as far as possible from the kingdom too. Anything to keep her queen safe until she regained her memory, or at least until Lorraine could get enough resources and backup to charge back to the kingdom and make things right. She still did not know who to trust. And it sure as hell still gutted her that she did not know the alpha consort’s number. She had managed to lose her phone too, missing any chance to connect with that pain-in-the-ass beta. She pulled her

“This place is no longer… Safe, Sonia. It's…it's just not right anymore. Let's leave here. We can go any other place you want. Up north? East? Anywhere. If you choose, I will agree with you.”Sonia's voice bristled when she responded, “And if I want to stay here?”“Sonia…”“I want to stay here,” she continued without waiting for the refusal she already heard in Kamara's tone. “I know I can't remember much, and I have no idea where we were coming from apart from what you told me. I don't know why I suddenly told you I had to leave Paree before we got into the accident. You believe I was afraid of something. Maybe even running from someone. But the fact remains that I can't remember any of that. I rely on you for memories I might never get back. And maybe that's why it hurts when I feel that there are things you are holding back from me. Important things.”“Sonia…”“You don't have to tell me until you want to. I am not forcing you to say it. So give me the same courtesy by not asking me

A low chuckle rumbled through the man's chest as he said lightly, “Really? You are commanding me now?”Kamara did not back down this time as she replied, “I will not repeat myself. Stay the fuck away from her!”The smile on the man's face was laced with something that made Sonia's pulse race. He was not flinching against the glare of light bathing him. His eyes did not move from Kamara, yet Sonia could feel his presence all around. She was beginning to think his laid-back posture was more dangerous than Kamara's aggressive stance.“Kamara,” Sonia called lightly, trying to take her attention away from the man. Though she felt the shift in Kamara's attention, her cousin did not take her eyes off the man.“I don't… I don't think he is a bad man. He stood up to a…creep earlier. He was just about to explain why he was following me when you arrived,” Sonia explained hurriedly, trying to inject anything that could diffuse the tension she did not understand. He smiled lazily as he raised a

“You shouldn't see me,” he whispered, with a hint of curiosity in his tone. Yet she could hear him clearly.“Uhn? What do you mean I shouldn't see you?” Sonia said as she placed her hand against her belly protectively. “You were acting all suspicious, following me like I owe you something,” she added testily, squinting when he walked past the flare of light and kept coming towards her as his face got swallowed up by the shadows again. She had the instinct of stepping back as he got closer, yet she straightened and stood up to him while wondering if her belly would allow her to give him a swift kick in the groin.“What is this about?” she asked as sternly as her breathy voice would allow.“You shouldn't hear me,” he said softly. A hint of steel underlay his tone, like that of a man used to command and domination.Sonia’s nose was filled with his musky scent. But there was something else underneath it. A scent. Something disturbing that made her lightheaded as it pulled hard at someth
