LOGINA month had passed.
A month since Eryndra had fled from her mate. Now, it was time to marry that Lycan beast. As her tired gaze met the mirror, her chest tightened. Staring back at her was a female she hardly recognized. Clad in accessories that made her feel like goods being wrapped for delivery. This wasn't her fate, but she had to bear it. She had to bear this awful responsibility that made her heart ache beyond measure. The maid pin her auburn hair up, styling it with rhinestones, and as they worked, her mother's stern advice lingered in her mind. 'Be kind and presentable to the prince. Do not question him and do whatever he says, no matter the circumstances.' Last month, her mother had cast the Veil Spell. After that, Eryndra had spent many nights recalling her mate. She imagined the disappointment on his face after seeing her gone. Imagined him searching restlessly for her. The guilt ate her up, and she wished she hadn't left him the way she did. Maren had warned her that if fate ever brought their paths together again, she had to stay away, or the Veil Spell wouldn't hold for long. Then again, what were the chances of that? A male with a scent as low as his had no place in the Citadel. Unless he was a servant, their paths were unlikely to ever cross again. That thought gave her a little comfort. Eryndra's mind wasn't the only thing in turmoil that morning. The entire pack was as well. Servants and guards bustled through the packhouse, while whispers echoed from every corner. "Is there a reason the pack is so chaotic, Mother?" Eryndra asked as soon as her mother stepped in. Luna Maren paused at the sight of her dressed, a quiet admiration flashing in her eyes, though it didn't quite cover the hint of nervousness beneath it. She dismissed the maids with a wave of her hand and approached. "The Crown Prince sent the Grand Marshal to escort you." Eryndra's heart skipped. "The Grand Marshal?! Why would the Crown Prince send someone of such rank as an envoy?" "Because, dear, the road is dangerous. Many packs fought for this position. There are envious eyes swimming in the realm, but do not worry. I heard the Grand Marshal is a great protector. He and the Crown Prince are as tight as a drum. Leave a good impression with him, but be extra careful." Maren's voice dropped discreetly. "He is well known as the Dark Knight. Many have died by his blade." A shiver ran up Eryndra's spine, and for a moment, she considered stopping this. It was too overwhelming. But it was too late now. A knock echoed through the chamber. Eryndra stiffened as the guard called for her. "Mother. Do you think they'll find out?" She shivered. "I hold too many secrets. What if they find out what I am?" A shadow crossed Maren's face knowing what she meant, but it quickly disappeared. "No one will," her voice was sharp and firm. "As long as you remember who you are, you will be safe. May the moon above guide you." Eryndra could feel the heavy weight on her mother's shoulders. It was never an easy thing to lose one daughter a month ago and send the other into royal hands. A knock sounded again. “They're waiting,” the guard called from outside. Maren gave her one last look before leading her into the hallway. Eryndra followed, her palms damp as they approached the Alpha's chamber. Several maids stood outside, openly gawking at the door. They scrambled away the moment Maren's glare landed on them, some suddenly becoming interested in cleaning the walls while others hurried off. Eryndra drew in one last breath. Then, with her head held high, she entered her father's chamber. Her gaze immediately caught on her father. Alpha Reavion appeared visibly stiff, a smile so awkwardly wide on his face that he was doing a terrible job of trying to impress the male before him. This male. Now she knew the reason the pack was all in a frenzy, especially the females. Eryndra had heard talk of Grand Lord Theron Ashrendel. He was known by many names. A paragon of Dionysus. The Dark Lord. The highest of the military ranks, his loyalty to the crown knew no bounds. His aura was undeniably overwhelming and regal, as though he commanded the room without even trying. If he drew this much attention, she wondered how much more the Crown Prince would have drawn had he come here himself. Her view of him was obstructed by another male who seemed to have come with him. A sorcerer with white hair. He spotted her first, then shifted aside, giving her a clearer view of the Grand Lord, who suddenly stopped tapping his finger the moment he seemed to sense her presence too. Wait. Eryndra's brows creased. Why does he look so familiar? "There she is!" Alpha Reavion announced. "Come here, Eryndra. Lord Theron has been waiting." Ever so slowly, Lord Theron turned his head. First his jaw. Then the line of his nose. Then-- Grey-silver eyes. Eryndra's stomach dropped. The room suddenly turned too hot. By the full moon. Please. No. Those eyes. Those sharp features and soft lips—all that had claimed her that night was unmistakably him. Grand Lord Theron Ashrendel... Was the stranger who claimed her in that cave... The Crown Prince's best friend. Her mate.Theron's mate?At first, Eryndra was terrified when the prince mentioned it, thinking she had been caught.A twisted feeling that made the room so small for her to breathe. However, when the female stepped out, the room froze.Eryndra blinked. Once. Twice. Struggling to look away. The female the limner had summoned was nothing like she had imagined.Slowly, she dragged her gaze to Theron, bewildered by his so-called imagination of her.Long jaw, very round brown eyes, a tiny crooked nose, and lips hard to see. Her features were the kind Eryndra had never imagined could exist. What baffled her was the height. This female was so tall her head nearly touched the ceiling. She forced her voice through her large teeth and smiled.“Good morning, my lord. I never thought I would ever step into the Citadel or ever get to meet you, Grand Marshal. Though I have no idea we are mates and even spent a marvelous, exquisite night together.”Theron's upper lip dragged upward at her giggle. She brushed
THERON “I came to ask if you have fulfilled your promise.”Theron finally looked at her.She was clad in a blue dress that matched her eyes, a shawl hanging from each arm, her hair pinned up.She stood close to the threshold as if afraid to approach him.“A lord never goes back on his word,” she reminded him.A small smirk touched his lips.He rose to his feet, pulled a letter from his drawer, and threw it at her.She gave him a disdainful look before picking it up from the floor.“They have already returned. My men are watching them closely. One wrong move from them or from you, and they will be dragged back here to serve an even harsher punishment,” he muttered while she read.Relief flashed in her eyes, and her shoulders slumped. She clutched the letter to her chest as a tear slipped down her cheek. Slowly, she sank to the floor.“I am so glad,” she murmured repeatedly. “They are safe.”Nausea hit Theron. He almost regretted sending them back, but he had to.Suddenly, she stiffene
That night, Jerik visited Theron’s private quarters only to be told he had not returned yet. On his way, he heard a groan somewhere and paused. Normally he would have brushed it off as soldiers training, but something made him pushed him to check. He followed the sound, and his eyes finally caught the scene. Zarin was curled into a ball as three soldiers stomped their feet hard on him, his face twisted with pain. The ground was stained with blood and sweat. “I told you never to speak back to me!” one of them barked. “You disgusting white-haired son of a bitch. How dare you call me a coward?” A crack sounded somewhere in Zarin’s body with the next hit, sending Jerik’s blood boiling. He grabbed the soldier from behind and slammed him against the nearest wall. Shivering, Zarin’s eyes met a furious Lycan with glowing eyes and bared fangs. “The hell do you think you are doing?” Jerik growled, his voice heavy with rage. “Is this how low you all have fallen?” The one who crashed agai
KAYARA “Why do you wish to see me?” Kayara asked in surprise, staring at Brielle, who gave her a nervous smile. Brielle set her cup down. Her expression turned serious. “You know Jerik better than anyone. I need to ask you something about him. About his… interests when it comes to satisfying his urges.” Kayara nodded slowly. She was very aware of Jerik’s preferences. Especially one. Hearing the worry in Brielle’s voice, her heart broke for her. But Kayara knew Jerik never forced this marriage. Brielle was the one who wanted it desperately because she loved him deeply. “Two months ago,” Brielle began. “On the full moon. I had just suppressed my heat when Jerik came home drunk, reeking of smoke, wine, and… sex.” Her voice shook on the last word. “I took him in as usual, wanting to wash him up, but he was acting strange. Hungry.” She fidgeted with her fingers. “He kissed me. He hardly kisses me, but he did. I could not resist, and I kissed him back. Somehow, we ended up together.”
Lady Reaya set her spoon down gently. She looked at her son with the expression of a mother searching for the little boy she had once cradled in her arms.“When I heard you had been struck by the same poison that is killing the King, I…” She paused and sighed. “I could not bear it. I thought I had lost you before I could say I was sorry.”Theron’s grip tightened around his spoon, his gaze lowered to the table.“I sat by the window almost every night,” she continued. “The servants probably thought I had gone mad, pacing at three in the morning, staring at the gates and hoping you would ride home. I just wanted to know if my son was still breathing.”Her breath faltered as she continued. “Do you remember when you were twelve? Long before you shifted. You and your little sister tried to build a tree house behind the stable. I watched you laugh every time you fell so you would not scare her. I watched you give her piggyback rides and let her win every game. She was in heaven whenever she
Somewhere deep inside a dungeon. The space was wide, with different stalls lining the walls. Soldiers led the slaves into their respective cells, the iron bars made from some of the strongest iron.“When am I getting a master?” a low, hoarse voice cut through the air.One of the soldiers paused, his gaze settling on the slave in the last cell. Her face was covered by her long, tangled auburn hair. Her skin was pale and bruised. She sat in the corner, her back resting against the wall. The soldier stepped forward, eyeing her.“I've never heard of a slave wanting to have a master so badly. You should be happy you're in here.”The slave girl sighed. “These four walls are boring. I thought I was meant to be the Grand Marshal’s slave. I heard he killed the last one. I'm intrigued.”The soldier froze, his eyes widening.“How did you—?” His face reddened. “What the fuck are you saying?!”“You all talk loudly,” she muttered, not raising her head once. “Don't worry. I'll keep my mouth shut.”“
