A FIRE I DIDN'T START

LOLA

Another knock broke out against my door — sharp, impatient.

My breathing seized for a second.

"Freddy!" I muttered, clutching tight at the material initially hanging between my fingers.

My eyes were watery from my own arousal, and I couldn't wait to finally be able to feel the emotions that remained unlocked in my heart.

My cheeks burnt red. I was so embarrassed that I packed up the box and shoved them under the sheets.

Adjusting the belt of my bath robe, I did a short breathing exercise to keep my voice firm.

Clutching the knob of the door, I took one last deep breath before yanking it open.

I gagged, my chest tightening to the sight in front of me. Not only did I not expect to see Eddy in front of my door by the time of the night, I was too fired up to handle whatever he had come to say.

It was ridiculous, but I wondered if he was here because of what I said to him at the stadium, and I feared we might end up doing something we both would regret by morning.

"Hi, Eddy," my voice was shaky.

I drew in a long breath, exhaling slowly right after.

"Why? We're still married, and I have every right," he replied, so casually, it felt like he had only said that to discard me.

"We're still married, but you insisted on different rooms. We're still married, but you never miss any opportunity to remind me of how I will never be part of the story of your life. We're still married?"

I couldn't hold it back. If he wasn't going to be reasonable, he should at least allow me to have my peace.

He glanced at me briefly, shaking his head like I was a toddler throwing meaningless tantrums.

My words caught in my throat, as he pushed me out of the way, grabbing the door from my grip to let himself in.

"What do you want, Eddy?" I insisted, going right after him.

"What do you want?" I repeated, crossing to stand opposite him with my hands outstretched beside me like I was preventing him from reaching something that was behind me.

Halting, Eddy let out a smirk, his eyes narrowing in a way as he scanned every corner of the room.

"You're being too defensive than usual. Are you hiding something?"

I swallowed.

Looking up at him again, I adjusted my posture. "I don't know what you are talking about, but it is uncomfortable having you in my room at this time of the night," I said, throwing back the words at him.

"You mean, it is unbelievable?" he asked, snorting loudly, as he pushed his way through.

Eddy was painfully persistent, and I knew going back and forth with him wouldn't yield the best results, so I let him.

My heart pounding restlessly — I wasn't still sure who the customized lingerie I had shoved under the sheets were from, and I wouldn't know how to handle it if Freddy walked in at this time.

My feet were cold and stiff against the hard tiles, my thoughts working for a way out, and my eyes steady for his next move.

I watched Eddy pace around the room a couple times, before finally turning to me.

"I am not under any obligation to explain my actions to anybody, especially you," he said, looking me down like I wasn't worth anything.

I couldn't say anything. I was conflicted — the thought that Eddy could actually be looking for something important built up guilt in my chest. Then, there was the other feeling I had been dealing with for the past two years, the one that made me shrink hard whenever I was in his presence.

I was still trying to get myself to say something with his gaze pressing me down hard when the door knob clicked open — no warning, no knock, no noise— Freddy.

He poked his head in first, and I was sure I saw a small smile on his lips until his eyes fell on Eddy, the smile suddenly filtering back into the skin of his face.

"Look who we have here," he exclaimed, letting himself in.

The situation didn't look too good. My eyes stung with worry.

Eddy turned, his face in the same tight expression of somebody who couldn't feel.

"I thought as much. Wow!" a grin spread across Freddy's face as he pulled his palms up to cover his mouth.

Eddy didn't say a word. He just kept staring at Freddy, I wondered if it didn't make him feel stupid to be stared at like that.

"I thought you were high and mighty. I thought you wouldn't succumb, but I guess legends get cold too," Freddy continued, his grin getting wider.

When I turned to Eddy, stood still by the corner with a silent rage in his eyes, my heart skipped a beat.

I wanted Freddy to stop, at the same time, I didn't want to get involved. I couldn't guess what Eddy was thinking, but I was sure that whatever it was, it wouldn't be in my favour.

"You have such a rotten ego, Eddison. If you are going to be like this, why did you opt for a different room?" Freddy's eyes widened as the question slipped out of his tongue.

"This is what you are at midnight, yet you act all mighty during the day," Freddy continued, anxiety crawling uncomfortably under my skin.

I was staring from Freddy to Eddy, and back to Freddy again.

It didn't look like he was going to stop anytime, and Eddy didn't seem to be considering talking back. It was the most uncomfortable setting.

I couldn't stand back and pretend like Freddy wasn't watering a tree that would end up falling on me.

"Freddy!" I snapped, stepping forward, my face scrunched up like a warrior's on his way to the battlefield.

"Someone has to tell him the truth," Freddy said, glaring me hard in the eyes, a silent message that I should leave him be, but I knew I couldn't do that.

I shook my head.

"You shouldn't speak to him like that," I replied.

"Maybe you should mind your own pathetic business," Eddy finally spoke from beside me, and with that, he strolled out of the room, slamming the door hard, the pressure v

ibrating against the walls.

I knew it.

I knew him.

I knew I'd better get ready to handle his wrath.

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   A SURPRISE AT NIGHT

LOLAWith my heart hammering hard against my chest, I hurried through the lonely path that led back to the stadium where the rest of the family ought to still be.I was sure practice had ended, and me missing right in that moment wouldn't look too good. The plan was to get there first, and then, Connor could come later.Standing before my father-in-law, all sweaty, my breathing giving away the fact that I had jogged all the way back, I thought of the best response to a question he had not even asked."We had been done for a while now. We were worried," Greg spoke, his eyes scanning every inch of my body in a way that felt rather uncomfortable.Struggling to keep my breathing steady and my shoulders up, I looked from my father-in-law to Eddy — his face was locked in an expression that told me just how much he wanted to say and how he was just waiting for the right time to come at me.Freddy was standing behind them, arms folded across his chest, skin glazed with sweat and his gaze send

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   YOU FOR ME

CONNORI wasn't a hockey person. I loved playing and watching outdoor games, but not hockey. Any other thing can work, not just hockey. Nevertheless, I had travelled to Norway with the Langfords to support Eddy's younger brother's game which was upon request by the director. He had texted me about it, and because Lola was going too, I knew I had to be there.Eddy might be right. I was there because of his wife, but there was a continuation of that truth Eddy didn't bother to add.I was there because I wanted to make sure his wife was protected from him.Through the flight, I had noticed Lola's discomfort, but I didn't get the opportunity to ask her why even until we had to watch skating on the ice. When I became fed up pretending like I was enjoying the practice game, I excused myself and went in search of even greater fun."Miss what?" she asked, the tension in her voice breaking apart."Get here first," I urged, leaning against the closest wall to me."What did you say?" her voice

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   YEARNING FOR MY BROTHER IN-LAW

LOLAI was mostly to myself through the flight, my thoughts everywhere, and my body doing a good job staying calm despite the storm that brewed underneath my skin.It was a long journey. When we touched down at the Norway airport, I was too tired to even think straight, and I felt too sleepy. I couldn't wait to be ushered into our rooms, then take a long hot shower and hide under the blankets, away from the reality I could never actually ever run from. Then, my father in law's words delivered like a blow to my face, "We will watch his practice tonight.""What the heck!" Eddy blurted out, his voice rising above his usual beat."You heard me, Eddy," Mr. Greg shot at him, looking around to make sure nobody had any other objection.Eddy was obviously not comfortable with the plan. He sighed, tugging at his tie uncomfortably as he paced around the space in front of him.Connor, on the other hand, stood at a distance with his hands folded, and his face holding a solid neutral expression.I

EDDYMy father makes the most spontaneous decisions. No wonder it was always difficult to work with him, and he thinks I am still not good enough.I pulled out another stick from the cigarette pack I had in my other hand. Sighing, I lit it and had drawn a long puff from it when I noticed someone was loitering beside me."We just had to board a flight when we had better options," I sighed, leaning back on the wall of the cabin. I was pissed standing as a family with Freddy, Lola and my father. Freddy was a freaking rival as long as I was concerned, and Lola? an intruder that was going to be done serving her purpose soon. So, I had strolled to a quiet corner to get a smoke or two."It's just impossible to please that old man!" I snapped, stomping my feet hard on the ground, pulling my jacket closer, and readjusting my scarf to cover my face.I drew another long puff from my cigarette, releasing it towards the mass of fog in front of me, my brain suddenly getting weary of the other pres

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   NOT NOW. NOT EVER.

FREDDYI rolled my eyes at the plate of snacks in front of me, sighing at how messy my relationship with my family had become, but having no regrets whatsoever concerning my decision."Everything is wrong here," I muttered, grabbing my glass of water and pouring every single drop down my throat. My father grunted beside me, and Eddy made a tired sound, letting his cutlery slip through his fingers to the plate noisily.I swallowed, pushing the words I had to say back down my throat. My eyes wandered over to where Lola sat, unsettled as usual, her face void of any real emotion. It was almost like she was checking her breathing too, careful not to sniff in the wrong direction.Letting my guards down, I allowed my gaze linger longer on her face, and for some reason, I couldn't help but notice how much of the wrong piece she appeared as on the table — not because I think she wasn't family which was sad enough giving that it had to be Eddy, but because her demeanor made her appear so in eve

LOLAI swallowed, closing my eyes to the pain of the moment suddenly ending because of the same thing I had feared.I was back in my room - the room I shared with Eddy, and I was sitting n*ked on the toilet seat, my face pressed hard against my palms when I remembered that I had forgotten my flops

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   I WANT IT MORE

LOLAMy feet hurried across the corridor, past the first room, then the second, and I was standing in front of Eddy's room.My heart was beating faster than it was while I waited for my fate at the breakfast table a while back. Not because I wanted my brother-in-law to touch me again under my husb

  • SCORNED BY HIM, DESIRED BY THE THREE   I COULD NO LONGER BEAR IT

LOLAMy fingers felt numb around the glass. I had been holding it for the past thirty minutes, not bothering to taste its content."Stand close to the bar. Don't follow me around."I was standing close to the bar, just overlooking the show in front of me.The room was all golden lights, and string

Bulky. Too tight. Top part too revealing. To crown it all, I detested red for clothes, but the fitting assistant had called it "stunning" and Eddy had nodded in agreement. Now, standing in the quiet living room of our home in Malibu in that same dress, my body feeling not like mine, I waited for Ed
