LOGINFREDDY
"Fredmon!" I heard a voice call out from a distance not very far from the bathroom door.
My body moved before my brain thought - I grabbed the towel off its hanger with one hand, the other working hard to secure the material around my waist, the whole operation executed with the graceless urgency of a man who could not bare to let the fact that he was wanking off to his elder brother's wife slip even as an unsure suspicion.
I knocked my elbow against the soap dish. It clattered into the sink. I swore under my breath and spun around with the towel half across my lap at an angle that made me look guilty of exactly what I was guilty of.
It wasn't Eddy.
My father stood in the doorway in his robe, one hand still on the door handle, looking at me with that particular expression of his - the one that gave nothing away and took everything in.
Gregory Langford had the eyes of a man who had spent a lifetime reading rooms and never once let a room read him back.
I straightened up, adjusted the towel, and tried to look like a man who had simply been standing in a bathroom for no specific reason.
"Dad." My voice came out steady. Decades of hockey had taught me how to take a hit and keep skating. "You mind?" I asked, directing him back to the bedroom with my eyes.
He didn't apologise. He never apologised. He stepped back instead, but his eyes never left where I stood, like he was looking for an answer to a question he didn't want to ask.
I sighed as I walked past him to take a seat on the bed, making sure I closed the bathroom door this time.
"You should have knocked at the very least, or am I not promised security at least?" I asked, my voice firm and angry.
"You're up early," he said instead, leaning against the dressing table, directly opposite my face.
"I'm always up early," I snapped, rolling my eyes at him.
"You weren't in your room last night."
My eyes widened to his question, but immediately, I moved, to distract him from paying too much attention to my expression.
Standing up, I hurried towards him, reaching for my shirt on the dressing table while searching my mind on how it got there.
"Couldn't sleep. Couch in the east wing," I muttered casually.
"Oh! Right," came his reply, casual, each word pronounced with an obvious air of unbelief.
I sighed, proceeding to pull the shirt over my head.
The space the room provided slowly closed in on me. I ran my fingers through my hair in a manner that showed how much more uncomfortable I had gotten from few minutes ago - when it was just me and my bad decision in the bedroom.
Gregory had a way of compressing space. Always had. When I was a kid I thought it was power. Now I just found it exhausting.
"Can you leave my room?" I asked, my tone as unhinged as ever. "I enjoy my mornings slow and empty."
Gregory heard me, but his expression did not falter, not even for a second. I hate it here.
"It's Eddy's house..." he corrected. My knuckles clenched hard as I waited for the last part of that sentence.
He let out a deep exhale instead, turning away from me.
"Say it!" I snapped, walking over to stand in front of his face.
"Say it! You don't have to be lenient. I don't have a say here? I don't have any power here? What other words?" I snarled in his face.
My stomach twirled in anger, and my body stiffened to impatience.
The ground beneath me felt unstable - I found myself digging my toes hard to hold my balance.
My body was trembling to the thoughts I was trying so hard to numb, at least, for the week I was here.
The truth is, nobody forced me to be here. My father sent a couple of mails to my box, but none was a threat.
Another truth, I still believed that, aside from my father wanting to force a life I didn't enjoy on me, I still thought he wouldn't have listened to me when Eddy pushed Lola into marrying him.
I had scores to settle with him, and I had to pull myself together if I wanted to get to the bottom of this.
I shut my eyes tight and inhaled deeply, my body loosening to the tension as I slowly exhaled.
"I didn't think you'd come," Gregory adjusted in his position. "You have a season coming up soon." He spoke like he truly controlled the energy in the room.
"F*ck!" I swore under my breath, running my fingers through my hair.
"Pre-season. There's a difference." Swiftly, I turned, letting my emotions fold back up into somewhere inside of me, safe and useful for later.
Slowly, not defeated, I walked back to the bed and let myself sink into it.
I had my eyes down for a couple of seconds, but by the time I looked up again, Gregory was staring me dead, a smile playing invisibly against his lips
"Edmond's wife," he said, lowering his gaze, "Lola."
My fingers stiffened against the sheets, but I kept a steady expression.
"What about her?" I said.
"You both seem to know each other well?"
"I don't know her," I replied without thinking.
His gaze returned squarely to my face, with an expression of something that sat between assessment and amusement.
"She's a very particular kind of woman," he continued.
I kept my face neutral. "Is she."
"The kind that makes a house feel different." He paused. "You notice that?"
The back of my neck was warm. I was suddenly aware of everything - the particular way I was standing, the distance between my expression and whatever was going on behind it, whether my father, who had made a forty-year profession out of reading people, could hear last night in the way I was breathing.
"I notice she seems unhappy," I said. "But that's Eddy's business."
"Unhappy women are everybody's business eventually," he said with the confidence of a weather reporter that had been long in the job. "Unhappy women in beautiful bodies especially."
Something moved through me in that moment - quick and cold, like a blade drawn fast enough that you feel the air before the steel.
I looked at him. His expression was void of any message. Still easy. Still giving me absolutely nothing to grab hold of.
"I'm going to get breakfast," I said, standing up and hurrying to the wardrobe for a pair of pants.
"Of course." He stood up.
"Freddy," he called from behind me.
My fingers paused at the handle of the wardrobe.
"It's good to have you home," he said.
I nodded once. Then listened to his footsteps receding, the door swinging open, the gentle coldness of the outside air he let in and the door jamming shut finally, all of these with the controlled stride of a man who is fine, who has nothing on his mind, who did not spend the night in his brother's wife's bed and did not just watch his father describe her the way a man described something he intends to acquire.
"Unhappy women in beautiful bodies especially."
I closed my eyes.
The way he had said it. Not like a man making an observation.
Like a man making a reservation.
GREGORYThe city stretched out in front of me as I gazed out of the window, the after taste of the white wine still lingering somewhere down my throat. My fingers stiffened against the glass wedged between them, still half filled. The loud thoughts I had carried carefully since the first day weighed in my chest.I grunted, clearing my throat loudly.I couldn't hold it down, but I couldn't even move forward with everything happening in my family at the moment.I knew I needed to be careful. There was the company, and the future of my sons.I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Maybe, Lola was a distraction that shouldn't even cross my mind, but I couldn't help it. Sighing, I clasped my fingers tighter around the glass, glaring hard at the landscape of the city. Lola's room was right next to mine, but what good does that even do me if I can't call her over.It just kept getting harder for me to sleep, especially with knowing she was inside, probably taking a bath or sprawled out n*ked on
FREDDYThrough practice, I couldn't stop thinking about Lola. Maybe because I knew she was watching me like old times, and it sparked feelings that ought to have stayed buried until forever.Through the banter between her, my father and Eddy, I couldn't care less. I just stayed at the parts of her body that weren't concealed under the jacket draped across her shoulders. As soon as I got the opportunity to ask, I took it, and of course, Lola couldn't say No to me.It was a little hard convincing my coach to allow me to stay outside the team house. By the time I had concluded with the boys, checked into a hotel room, got a shave and freshened up, time was far spent. As I scurried into the elevator for the fifth floor, I wondered if she was waiting up for me or perhaps, given up and gone to bed.But then, Eddy was there. I didn't expect him to be. I didn't turn back though. I hadn't made all of those arrangements to chicken out of his presence."You shouldn't have said that, Freddy. What
LOLAAnother knock broke out against my door — sharp, impatient. My breathing seized for a second."Freddy!" I muttered, clutching tight at the material initially hanging between my fingers. My eyes were watery from my own arousal, and I couldn't wait to finally be able to feel the emotions that remained unlocked in my heart. My cheeks burnt red. I was so embarrassed that I packed up the box and shoved them under the sheets.Adjusting the belt of my bath robe, I did a short breathing exercise to keep my voice firm.Clutching the knob of the door, I took one last deep breath before yanking it open.I gagged, my chest tightening to the sight in front of me. Not only did I not expect to see Eddy in front of my door by the time of the night, I was too fired up to handle whatever he had come to say.It was ridiculous, but I wondered if he was here because of what I said to him at the stadium, and I feared we might end up doing something we both would regret by morning."Hi, Eddy," my voice
LOLAWith my heart hammering hard against my chest, I hurried through the lonely path that led back to the stadium where the rest of the family ought to still be.I was sure practice had ended, and me missing right in that moment wouldn't look too good. The plan was to get there first, and then, Connor could come later.Standing before my father-in-law, all sweaty, my breathing giving away the fact that I had jogged all the way back, I thought of the best response to a question he had not even asked."We had been done for a while now. We were worried," Greg spoke, his eyes scanning every inch of my body in a way that felt rather uncomfortable.Struggling to keep my breathing steady and my shoulders up, I looked from my father-in-law to Eddy — his face was locked in an expression that told me just how much he wanted to say and how he was just waiting for the right time to come at me.Freddy was standing behind them, arms folded across his chest, skin glazed with sweat and his gaze send
CONNORI wasn't a hockey person. I loved playing and watching outdoor games, but not hockey. Any other thing can work, not just hockey. Nevertheless, I had travelled to Norway with the Langfords to support Eddy's younger brother's game which was upon request by the director. He had texted me about it, and because Lola was going too, I knew I had to be there.Eddy might be right. I was there because of his wife, but there was a continuation of that truth Eddy didn't bother to add.I was there because I wanted to make sure his wife was protected from him.Through the flight, I had noticed Lola's discomfort, but I didn't get the opportunity to ask her why even until we had to watch skating on the ice. When I became fed up pretending like I was enjoying the practice game, I excused myself and went in search of even greater fun."Miss what?" she asked, the tension in her voice breaking apart."Get here first," I urged, leaning against the closest wall to me."What did you say?" her voice
LOLAI was mostly to myself through the flight, my thoughts everywhere, and my body doing a good job staying calm despite the storm that brewed underneath my skin.It was a long journey. When we touched down at the Norway airport, I was too tired to even think straight, and I felt too sleepy. I couldn't wait to be ushered into our rooms, then take a long hot shower and hide under the blankets, away from the reality I could never actually ever run from. Then, my father in law's words delivered like a blow to my face, "We will watch his practice tonight.""What the heck!" Eddy blurted out, his voice rising above his usual beat."You heard me, Eddy," Mr. Greg shot at him, looking around to make sure nobody had any other objection.Eddy was obviously not comfortable with the plan. He sighed, tugging at his tie uncomfortably as he paced around the space in front of him.Connor, on the other hand, stood at a distance with his hands folded, and his face holding a solid neutral expression.I
LOLAI swallowed, closing my eyes to the pain of the moment suddenly ending because of the same thing I had feared.I was back in my room - the room I shared with Eddy, and I was sitting n*ked on the toilet seat, my face pressed hard against my palms when I remembered that I had forgotten my flops
LOLAMy feet hurried across the corridor, past the first room, then the second, and I was standing in front of Eddy's room.My heart was beating faster than it was while I waited for my fate at the breakfast table a while back. Not because I wanted my brother-in-law to touch me again under my husb
LOLAI had been sitting at the table for over fifteen minutes. Alone. The dining room was the kind of large that feels larger when you are the only person in it. I sat at my usual spot - the chair closest to the window that nobody else wanted because the morning light came in at an angle that made
Bulky. Too tight. Top part too revealing. To crown it all, I detested red for clothes, but the fitting assistant had called it "stunning" and Eddy had nodded in agreement. Now, standing in the quiet living room of our home in Malibu in that same dress, my body feeling not like mine, I waited for Ed
