ANMELDENFREDDY
I rolled my eyes at the plate of snacks in front of me, sighing at how messy my relationship with my family had become, but having no regrets whatsoever concerning my decision.
"Everything is wrong here," I muttered, grabbing my glass of water and pouring every single drop down my throat.
My father grunted beside me, and Eddy made a tired sound, letting his cutlery slip through his fingers to the plate noisily.
I swallowed, pushing the words I had to say back down my throat.
My eyes wandered over to where Lola sat, unsettled as usual, her face void of any real emotion. It was almost like she was checking her breathing too, careful not to sniff in the wrong direction.
Letting my guards down, I allowed my gaze linger longer on her face, and for some reason, I couldn't help but notice how much of the wrong piece she appeared as on the table — not because I think she wasn't family which was sad enough giving that it had to be Eddy, but because her demeanor made her appear so in every sense of it.
I couldn't help but wonder if she was sick or bothered about something, but I couldn't even think so much about it before my father's voice broke through the space, pushing out the dead beat silence that initially had us all soaked up.
"I'm sure you must be wondering why I had asked to see you all," he started, looking from me to Eddy, then Lola.
"Dad, we are here and we're listening." I couldn't stop the words. I was already feeling itchy about sitting together like this, like they cared about me.
"I hope it's not about a problem someone probably caused. We're grown now. Everyone should learn how to take responsibility," Eddy said, his words obviously thrown at me.
I waited for my father's reaction.
Not satisfied with his final decision of giving him a warning look and clearing his throat to continue, I stood up from my chair.
"Freddy!"
Of course, it was my father, calling me to stay put and take whatever sh*t Eddy fed me because he is older and I am just some family outcast that neglected their responsibilities for years.
"I didn't call you to be here. I do not want to associate with you. I do not even want to be seated at a table with you. Read the room and act right, as*hole," I dropped, hard and fine, serving him a taste of his broth without a single hesitation.
I noticed how Lola's jaw dropped in shocking surprise, and caught sight of the expression of a knowing disappointment that lined my father's face, but I didn't care about things like that anymore — I stopped caring a long time ago.
From where he sat, Eddy grinded his teeth, an angry smile playing small against his lips.
He wasn't the type to let anything go, so I was ready to give him right back whatever bullet he throws at me next.
"Don't you dare say a word more, Eddy!" my father barked, causing Lola to jump.
I held my gaze on her face, hoping she would look back at me, but she didn't. Hands folded, body tensed uncomfortably, she just stared through the space in front of her.
I felt sorry for her. Maybe, she didn't deserve to witness tonight at this table, but it was good she is up to date about matters like this. It was her family too after all.
Eddy swallowed, a mere show of withdrawal, so I guessed, but I knew very well that Eddy wasn't that type of person.
"I had called us together as a family, not rivals or indecisive beings," my father spoke with a tense voice, the type he uses only in the boardroom, when he needed the audience to listen.
I sighed, taking my seat and running my fingers through my hair, an expected impatience suddenly taking over me.
"As a result, we have to fly for Freddy's game," my father dropped, leaving me totally awe-struck.
"How did you even know about that?" I bursted, unable to imagine the awkwardness of a family I had cut off for years travelling to watch a game that would become one of the major stories of my career.
"What do you mean? You're still my son. Norway and Boston? Going head on in less than a week? Isn't that why your coach is on your neck for your too-long break?"
My father sounded confident, and scary enough, serious.
I sighed.
"It is not possible. I did not expect you to plan a whole flight because you just wanted to watch me. It doesn't even make any sense." I didn't know how to stop myself from overthinking the absurdity of it all.
"That's it! You heard him. He doesn't need us there. We don't have to make it look all grand," Eddy spoke. "Lad os spare på kræfterne," he added, his words somewhat sounding like Dutch jargon.
"Let it be then," I bounced right back before even noticing how the smile that tugged discreetly at Lola's cheeks slowly faded into something that looked like confusion.
"I am not telling you, because I wanted your opinion or because I needed you to decide," my father barked through our voices, his throat bubbling up and down as he pushed hard on the part of the surface of the table in front of him.
I swallowed.
"He started it," Eddy spoke, glaring hard at me like his eyes were about to shoot out lasers.
"You're too petty, and it's sad," I returned.
"Fredmon Langford!" My father barked again, his voice bouncing off the walls and evening the ceilings.
"I forbid you from speaking until you are being spoken to," he finished.
Looking away, I sighed.
"We will all be leaving together, including Lola," my father continued again when he was convinced everyone was finally listening to him.
Lola was coming? Maybe, I could dwell on that and not think about the bad sides of my cover getting blown after years of hiding my identity from my team members and my friends in Norway.
I weighed my losses against my gains under my father's sudden decision. I thought about all the ways things could go wrong, and of course, I found myself flat on the losing end.
I might not be able to convince my father to consider his decision at the moment, but I knew I had to do something to stop them. I had a bad gut feeling about it, and my instincts were rarely incorrect.

CONNORWhen the door bell rang, I knew it was Lola.I texted her as soon as Eddy left my office yesterday, and she begged me to allow her to come see me today. We agreed on 9:00AM.As I walked to get the door, I glanced at my wristwatch and the time was 8:48AM.I hesitated for a second before opening the door, because I wasn't sure how to face her for an offence we both knew I was guilty of too.Nevertheless, I clicked the door open. Standing before me was a woman, obviously sad and confused, her face long and puffy from probably crying long hours. Not knowing what to say first, I just moved out of the way to allow her inside.Lola walked straight up to a couch and let herself sink in, then she buried her face in her palms, her hair falling all over her arms, depicting a perfect image of a woman who doesn't know what becomes of her.Inhaling slowly, I exhaled loudly."Did you tell Eddy where you were going?"She didn't answer. I let her be. Walking over to the couch opposite where s
CONNORI had just finished doing the ward rounds for the morning and had sunk into my office chair, ready for my hot cup of tea, but suddenly, I didn't feel like taking anything anymore. The walls of my stomach felt stiff, leaving me wondering if I truly had to go to the restroom again barely two hours after the last time I went. But then, I was waiting for a call for one of my patients, and I had a spreadsheet to quickly inspect.Deciding on just water, I settled in to work on my computer. Not too long after, a quick knock broke against my door. Then, Claire came in with her hands hanging like they normally would when there was an emergency. There was this sense of urgency in her expression that made me almost grab my lab coat from the hanger in readiness to attend whatever medical emergency it could be."There's someone asking to see you," she dropped finally, causing me to sit back in my chair disappointedly."C'mon Claire. You're not new to this job. You know my schedule and you
LOLAStanding in line with the others, we waited for chef Clementine as he inspected our designs one after the other."It looks a bit too...I wouldn't say shabby. Maybe, you could concentrate more next time.""Uuuhm...I don't know, but something is definitely wrong with this.""Okay. Great job."I listened to his comments on the works before mine, and it made me wonder what exactly he would say to me.I had been out of it the entire time I designed, my cuttings weren't straight and my line works were just as messy. A part of my icing design was shaky, on the edge of falling.I knew very well why I had turned out like that, and he knew too, but he is probably going to brush it off.I held my breath when he approached mine.Adjusting his apron, he tilted his head to look at my own designed cake sitting pathetically in front of me.My fingers folded inwards beside me."Hmmm...what is your name again?" he asked, but it was very obvious he was putting up an act. He had asked me my name whi
LOLAMy stomach grumbled from not having anything to eat since last night.I wasn't too comfortable to eat from Connor's, and I was too anxious to eat before leaving the house.I thought about ordering a take out, but then, the consequences that would come from Eddy checking my order description and his demeaning words on my body size of two years made me lose my appetite."F*ck it!" I cussed against my breath, making a mental note to visit the closest bakery as soon as I could get a break from the classes."The chef is unusually late today," a blonde woman with a disturbingly heavy make-up sitting in front of me spoke, forcing me to check my own time only to find out that we had been sitting for over an hour waiting for the first lesson of the day.My stomach grumbled more and louder, forcing the skinny woman sitting beside me to give me a dead ass scrutinizing look."I'm sorry. I skipped breakfast," I muttered, staring apologetically in her direction. In response, she shook her head
LOLAAs Freddy began to walk away, I followed him, my chest pounding uncontrollably in my chest. We walked up the stairs until we were right on the second floor with my room a couple steps in front. He turned to face me. Despite the urge to fall on my knees and try to plead my way out of the terrible act of listening to his conversation with his father, I tried to maintain a straight expression.Without a single word, he stared me down like he too was finding it difficult to come up with a first word, or maybe, he was contemplating on how best to rebuke me.I couldn't stare him back in the eyes, maybe I would have been able to tell what his thoughts were.Exhaling sharply, he turned and began walking up the stairs.I thought about heading straight for my room, but instead, I followed him."Stop, Freddy. Maybe we could talk."He didn't reply, just kept going. He got to his room and let himself in, banging the door right in my face."Freddy! I am sorry for listening to your conversation
LOLAI swallowed, closing my eyes to the pain of the moment suddenly ending because of the same thing I had feared.I was back in my room - the room I shared with Eddy, and I was sitting n*ked on the toilet seat, my face pressed hard against my palms when I remembered that I had forgotten my flops
LOLAMy feet hurried across the corridor, past the first room, then the second, and I was standing in front of Eddy's room.My heart was beating faster than it was while I waited for my fate at the breakfast table a while back. Not because I wanted my brother-in-law to touch me again under my husb
LOLAI had been sitting at the table for over fifteen minutes. Alone. The dining room was the kind of large that feels larger when you are the only person in it. I sat at my usual spot - the chair closest to the window that nobody else wanted because the morning light came in at an angle that made
FREDDY"Fredmon!" I heard a voice call out from a distance not very far from the bathroom door.My body moved before my brain thought - I grabbed the towel off its hanger with one hand, the other working hard to secure the material around my waist, the whole operation executed with the graceless ur
