CHAPTER 19: THREE MONTHS IN

Emma knocked on Damien's apartment door at seven on a Thursday evening.

He answered immediately, like he'd been waiting. Which he probably had been.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi," Emma replied. "I brought dinner."

It had become their routine. Thursday nights. Chinese food. Conversation. Nothing more. They were taking it slow, which meant a lot of talking and a lot of restraint.

Damien's apartment was smaller than she'd expected. Not modest, but human-sized. One bedroom. A kitchen he actually used. Books everywhere. Evidence of a life that didn't revolve around money or power.

They ate on the couch and talked about their weeks.

Emma's gallery had gotten press coverage. A local magazine had featured her work. She'd sold three paintings already. People were starting to know her name.

"I'm proud of you," Damien said, and he meant it. She could see it in his face.

"Thanks," Emma said. She still wasn't used to people being proud of her work. It felt strange and good at the same time.

"How's the business?" she asked.

Damien had stepped back from his father's company. He'd brought in new management, people without ties to Richard's crimes. He was restructuring everything, making it ethical. It was taking longer than he wanted.

"It's slow," he said. "But better. I had to fire two executives who were involved in the same schemes Richard was. People are angry. The board wanted to keep them."

"But you didn't," Emma said.

"No," Damien agreed. "I couldn't. Not after everything."

Emma set down her food. "Are they fighting back?"

"Some of them are," Damien said. "They're threatening lawsuits. They're saying I'm destroying the company. They're probably right about that. But I can't keep people in positions of power if they're corrupt."

"You could," Emma said. "You just don't want to."

"That's the difference," Damien replied. "I could. But I won't."

They sat in silence for a moment, eating their food.

"The trial is next week," Damien said.

Emma nodded. Richard's trial was finally coming to a close. The prosecution had a strong case. The recording was damning.

"Are you going?" Emma asked.

"Yes," Damien said. "I need to hear him sentenced. I need to see it end."

Emma understood what he meant. Understanding it intellectually and hearing him say it out loud were different things.

"I'll come with you if you want," Emma offered.

Damien looked at her. For a moment he didn't say anything.

"You would?" he asked.

"Yes," Emma said. "Not as your girlfriend or your support system. Just as someone who cares about you and wants to be there."

Damien reached over and took her hand. It was the most physical contact they'd had in three months. Just holding hands. But it felt significant.

"Thank you," he said.

They finished eating and moved to the kitchen. Emma washed the containers while Damien made tea. They went back to the couch and sat closer this time, still not touching but closer than before.

"How's Tyler?" Damien asked.

Emma had been seeing Tyler more. He was in a program. Eight months sober now. Working a regular job. It was slow progress but it was progress.

"He's doing better," Emma said. "He's actually trying. Not just saying he's trying but actually putting in the work."

"That's good," Damien said. "I know he hurt you. But I'm glad he's getting help."

Emma didn't respond right away. The truth was complicated. Tyler had betrayed her. Tyler had lied. But he was her brother and he was trying to be better, and that had to count for something.

"He asked me to forgive him," Emma said finally.

"Did you?" Damien asked.

"I don't know yet," Emma said. "I'm working on it."

They talked about other things. Books they were reading. A movie Damien wanted to see. The small ordinary things that made up a life.

Emma told him about a client who came into the gallery. Someone who'd stood in front of one of her paintings for thirty minutes without moving. She'd watched them from across the room, not wanting to interrupt.

"Eventually they turned to me and they were crying," Emma said. "They said the painting reminded them of someone they'd lost. Someone they'd been grieving for years."

"What did you say?" Damien asked.

"Nothing," Emma said. "What could I say? I just stood there with them for a few minutes and then left them alone."

Damien nodded. He understood. Sometimes presence was enough.

He told her about a meeting he'd had. About a company that was willing to work with him on restructuring their business practices. About how hard it was to convince people that ethics were worth the financial loss.

"They kept asking me what the bottom line was," Damien said. "And I kept saying the bottom line is that we stop hurting people. And they looked at me like I was insane."

By the time Emma was getting ready to leave, it was almost midnight.

Damien walked her to the door.

She was putting on her jacket when he pulled her close.

"I want to kiss you," he said. "But I'm scared if I start, I won't stop."

Emma smiled because it was true. They both knew it was true. The restraint they'd been practicing was hanging on by a thread.

"Then maybe we're not ready yet," she said.

"How long?" Damien asked. "How long until we're ready?"

"I don't know," Emma said honestly. "But we'll figure it out together."

She kissed him on the cheek and left before the restraint broke completely.

In her car, Emma got a text from Damien.

I love you. I know we haven't said it yet, but I needed you to know.

She pulled over and typed back.

I love you too.

She sat there for a moment, parked on the side of the road, understanding that everything had changed. The contract had expired a long time ago and they were still here. Still choosing each other. Still building something that neither of them had expected.

Three months after the twins were born, Emma was exhausted in a way that sleep couldn't fix. Alexander and Sophia were beautiful but demanding. They cried at different times. They fed at different schedules. Emma's body felt like it didn't belong to her anymore. One night, after the babies finally fell asleep, Damien found her standing in the kitchen at three in the morning, staring at nothing. "Come to bed," he said. "I can't," Emma replied. "One of them will wake up." "Then come sit with me for five minutes," Damien said. He led her to the bedroom and pulled her onto the bed, still fully clothed. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, his chin resting on her shoulder. "I know this is hard," he said. "I love them," Emma said. "But I don't recognize myself anymore." Damien was quiet for a moment. "When do you want me?" he asked. Emma didn't understand the question at first. "As a woman," Damien continued. "Not as a mother. Not as my wife. As Emma. When d

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 30: THE LETTER

Emma opened the envelope slowly. Richard's handwriting was neat. Precise. The handwriting of someone who'd spent years controlling everything, including how he presented himself on paper. Dear Emma, I don't know if you'll ever read this. I don't know if you'll care. But I need to try. I am your biological father. You know that now. What you may not know is that I've known about you since before you married Damien. I had you investigated. I learned everything about you. Your struggles. Your strength. Your refusal to give up even when everything was working against you. And I was proud of you. That's the truth I need you to understand. I didn't orchestrate Margaret's attack because I wanted to hurt you. I orchestrated it because I thought you were getting too close to discovering the truth about Katherine's death. I thought if I removed you from the picture, Damien would stop asking questions. I thought I could protect myself by eliminating the threat. I was completely w

Emma's eyes opened to white walls and the sound of machines beeping. Her chest hurt. Everything hurt. A nurse was checking her vitals. "Welcome back," the nurse said. "You've been asleep for three days." Three days. Emma tried to remember but couldn't. Just fragments. Pain. Blood. Damien's voice calling her name. "The bullet didn't hit anything vital," the nurse continued. "You're going to recover." Emma tried to sit up but her body wouldn't cooperate. "Don't move," the nurse said. "You need rest." Over the next week, police came and took her statement. Lawyers came with documents. Damien never left her side. Margaret confessed to everything. Richard had been orchestrating it from prison, paying her to watch Emma, to report back, to make sure Emma stayed close to Damien. Richard knew Emma was his daughter. He'd known before the marriage. "He was using you," Damien said when he told her. "To help him get information. To help him rebuild his empire." Emma didn't

Margaret's voice on the phone had been calm but there was something underneath it. A threat wrapped in politeness. "Meet me at the manor," she'd said. "Alone. If you bring Damien, I won't talk." Emma had argued but Margaret hung up. Now Emma stood outside Cross Manor in the darkness, understanding that she was about to walk into something dangerous. Damien was supposed to be meeting her there in an hour. They'd agreed he would stay back and let Emma talk to Margaret first, then move in if things got bad. Emma had a panic button on her phone. One press and Damien would come running. She didn't plan on needing it. The manor was exactly as she remembered. Cold stone. Expensive everything. The kind of place that had seen too many secrets. Margaret was waiting in the study. "Thank you for coming," Margaret said. She was sitting in a leather chair, looking like she owned the world. "What do you want?" Emma asked. "To tell you the truth," Margaret replied. "About your hus

The gallery was packed. Emma stood in the back watching people move through the space, looking at her paintings. Strangers. Collectors. Critics. People who'd read about the drama and came out of curiosity instead of genuine interest in her work. She wore a black dress. Simple. Nothing that would distract from the paintings. Tyler arrived early. He looked good. Healthier than he had in the hospital. He moved slowly, like his body was still recovering, but his eyes were clear. "These are incredible," he said when he saw her paintings. "Thanks," Emma replied. They didn't hug. They didn't pretend things were normal between them. They just stood there acknowledging that something had shifted and they were both trying to navigate it. "I'm sorry," Tyler said. "I know I've said it a thousand times but I need you to know that I mean it." "I know you do," Emma said. "Does that mean you forgive me?" Tyler asked. Emma thought about it. About the lies. About the money. About

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 26: ALONE

Emma locked her apartment door and didn't leave for three days. She didn't answer Damien's calls. She didn't check on Tyler. She sat in her living room and stared at the walls, trying to understand how everything had gotten so broken. Around noon on the third day, there was a knock on her door. "Emma, I know you're in there," Damien said through the door. "Please let me in." She stood on the other side of the door, her hand on the lock, unable to move. "I'm not leaving until you talk to me," Damien continued. Emma opened the door. Damien looked worse than she felt. He hadn't shaved. He was wearing the same clothes from yesterday. His eyes were red. "Come back home," he said. "I can't," Emma replied. "Why not?" "Because I need to think," Emma said. "Because I need to figure out who I am without all of this." Damien moved into the apartment and closed the door behind him. "I understand you're scared," he said. "I'm scared too." "You don't understand," Emma
