Ivy’s POV

We walked down the hall, still holding hands. No one said anything to us. No one dared.

I kept my head down. I didn’t even want to know who was looking. My face was probably still red.

My eyes felt heavy from crying. My nose was stuffy too, which was just great. He didn’t let go of my hand. Not once.

When we got to the back exit, the one near the field, he opened a door, and I knew where that passage led to. It ran down straight to the A-listers’ room.

I didn’t even question it this time. I just followed.

He pushed the door open. The room was empty. Just the sound of the AC humming.

He walked over to the shelf at the back, grabbed a bottle of juice and two packs of cookies, then came back with some kind of sour candy I didn’t recognize.

He dropped them on the table in front of me and sat down.

“Eat something,” he said.

I just stared at him. “I’m fine.”

“You’re not.”

Right after he said that, my stomach made this tiny growl. I saw the smirk creep onto

  • SECRETS & SCANDALS   CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

Ivy’s POV It was the weekend, thank God. No school today, which meant no weird hallway stares or drama or any of that stuff. The morning was quiet. Weirdly, I didn’t totally hate the idea of going to therapy today. Not exactly fun, but not scary either. The chairs didn’t feel so stiff anymore. Ms. Kay’s voice didn’t annoy me like it used to. I still got nervous, yeah. Just not the kind that made me feel like I was gonna throw up or pass out. I got there early. The windows were all open, which was weird. Maybe someone finally complained. My arms were cold, but whatever. Better than sweating through another group. A few were already in the circle, chatting like it wasn’t weird being here. It always felt weird to me. That’s when I saw Derek. Back row. Hoodie up. Legs stretched like he owned the place. Head down like he couldn’t care less. He looked half asleep. Or like he wanted to disappear. I sat a few chairs away from him. Tried not to stare, which obviously meant I stared. I

  • SECRETS & SCANDALS   CHAPTER FORTY

Ivy’s POV I had no clue where I was headed. I just needed to leave. But as I ran down the hall, I ran right into Zane and Liam. Zane grabbed my arm before I could pass him. “Yo—what the hell?” Liam stepped between us, eyes darting around. “Ivy? What happened?” I wiped at my face, but it was useless. The tears kept coming, my hands were shaky. I knew I looked like a mess. Zane’s face changed instantly. “Who did this?” “Can I go?” I said, voice all shaky. “Please.” Diane and Nola caught up right after. Nola looked pissed. “She’s here,” Diane said, breathing hard. “Ivy—” “What happened?” Liam asked again, now directing the question to the newcomers. Zane looked worried. “Did someone say something to you?” Before I could answer, we heard shouting back inside the gym. Gary’s voice. “You don’t say that to someone who just lost everything!” Liam’s face changed instantly. He didn’t ask for details. He just turned and started walking fast toward the gym. His s

Ivy’s POV As soon as we stepped out of the room, the gym bell rang. I jumped a little. Liam didn’t even flinch. He looked down at me. “You heading there now?” I nodded. “Yeah.” He nodded, then turned and left down the hall. I kept quiet and just walked toward the lockers. I changed into my gym clothes real quick. Gray shirt, black short. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, but I didn’t stop walking. I found them right away. Diane, Nola, and Gary by the balls. My chest loosened a bit. Thank God. I felt a tiny bit better seeing them. I walked straight to them. “There you are,” Diane said, pulling me closer. “Where the hell have you been?” “We’ve been looking,” Nola added. “Thought you ran off or something.” Gary smiled and gave a small wave. “Hey cutiepie,” he said kissing ne on the forehead before heading off to join his friends near the hoops. Diane turned to me again. “Seriously, Ivy. Where were you during lunch?” I looked down at my shoes. “Liam took me to the A-listers’

Then I looked down. My face went red immediately.I wasn’t on the couch anymore.I was in that chair. The one Liam always sat in.The big one with the wooden arms and deep back.I remembered Zane telling me about the chair. Ivy’s POV Claire found me the next morning. I’d just gotten past the gate when she popped out from behind a pillar. Her hair was done like always. Lip gloss shiny. “Hey, Ivy,” she said, smiling too much. “Can we talk?” I didn’t even get a word out before she grabbed my arm and pulled me to the side of the building where it was colder. Her smile dropped. “Look,” she said. “I don’t know what sob story you’re running with, but don’t get too comfortable.” I blinked. My heart thudded. “Guess being the tragic girl means you can sit with whoever you want, huh?” she said with a mocking smile. “You don’t belong in that room. It’s for us. The A-listers. Not some girl with a sad background.” I made myself look at her. The therapist lady said to practice holding eye contact, so I did. Even though I was scared. Even though my hands were shaking. I forced out a few words. “I never asked for any of this. They’re the ones who keep showing up.” My voice came out small. It cracked a little.
