Perfect...

I clutched a silk velvet tie, smiling warmly.

This would look perfect on him. I raised it, the silver brooch glistening in the light. It had cost me an arm and leg, but it was totally worth it.

I tucked the expensive tie away in its gold - trimmed box. My gaze focusing at the mirror's reflection; long dark hair and dark eyes with dark circles underneath.

I took two steps backwards, making sure i'd adjusted my dress properly. Then i gripped the bag, the ropes delicate against my rough, calloused hands.

Earned through years of running the house chores. I stared up the stairwell, breathing heavily. The wooden boards felt cold, my soles tingling each time i took a step.

Then another.

Standing before the grand oakwood doors, i paused - my breath hitching.

Probably i might have dressed up a tad bit too much. Jason wasn't the type to fancy sophisticated things; he often found them quite complicating to deal with.

My chapped lips parted, a soft sigh escaping them. Then i stretched out my hands once more, reaching for the door knob. My hands froze mid-air, the muffled sounds of laughter coming from his study.

The familiar voices of my husband and child filled my heart with ease. I lowered my gaze, staring at the small box in my hands - maybe now wasn't the right time for this.

I'll just come back later when they're done.

Turning away, i walked a few paces only stopping to glance at the door. I knew that i had to leave, but at that moment, i seemed to be hesitating.

Then i heard it, a loud pitched giggle coming from the inside. I stared, about to shrug it off dismissively, but something felt off.

I walked back towards the door, my footsteps slow and steady. Then i leaned in, pressing my ears against the door, eavesdropping.

" Sweetheart, i've missed you so much."

I listened to the soft, coquettish voice coming from the study. I blinked, confused for a moment. I remembered only my husband and child going in, but why was i hearing a female's voice?.

And,sweetheart....?!

I clutched the small cardboard box, my curiosity and suspicion growing with every passing minute. What the hell was going on?

Was this some kind of prank...?

I stepped back, eavesdropping wasn't right. Maybe this was some sort of a misunderstanding, nothing worth working up about.

I nodded. Yes, everything made sense this way.

I leaned back in, my fingers tracing the carved designs on the door. I needed more faith, my husband would never cheat on me....he would never!

Jason chuckled, his tone filled with deep indulgence. "I've missed you too, darling. If i weren't so busy, i would have made out enough time to be with you".

Darling....

I stumbled, almost losing my balance. Jason.... he just called that person, darling.

"Hmph!!, that's what you keep saying. I think you actually prefer being with that disabled liability of a wife than me". She spoke, her pitch high and mocking.

" No, it's not like that, Aunt Irina. That dull, generic mother of mine can never hold a candle to you. All she does everyday is chores, she doesn't have a taste for anything. In terms of tastes, she pales in comparison to you. How can i possibly prefer someone like that?!", Edward remarked.

I gasped, a sharp pain twisting in my heart. I had never thought of a day my own child would speak so ill of me, all for some stranger.

I bit my lower lips, hands trembling as tears threatened to spill from my eyes. I covered my lips, trying to swallow back my sobs.

"I thought as much, rather than staying with her. Why don't you come over and keep me company?". She spoke softly, not hiding her disdain towards me.

" I've really missed having you guys around, it's boring here without the both of you."

" Irina, i really can't come today. It's my eight year wedding anniversary with Selene". Jason spoke, his tone apologetic.

Irina sighed, expressing her grievance. "You keep saying you love me,yet you can just do this one thing for me. Why do try keeping this marriage when it's clearly a sham”. She paused, "Don't tell me you're already falling in love with her?"

"Irina, you know that's not possible!!", Jason denied hurriedly, his tone firm.

I gripped the hem of my dress, my fingers digging through the fabric and into my palm. With just one sentence, he denied our relationship.

"If it weren't for that incident nine years ago and the need to keep her under control, i would never had gotten together with her in the first place.", he added.

I blinked, utterly confused. What incident could have occurred nine years ago that would've compelled Jason into entering a loveless marriage with me?

Irina snorted, her tone all high and mighty. " I did nothing wrong, they're just a couple of old, annoying folks. How was i supposed to know that they wouldn't survive the car crash....?"

" It would have been better if she also died. I not only failed to kill her, i also lost you to her as well."

I hissed, pain blurring my vision. I held my aching head, feeling the pieces and fragments of lost memories come together. And then it clicked....

Car crash, nine years ago....

I remembered it all, those long buried, dark memories had surfaced. I thought i had gotten rid of them, i thought i was living a better life now...

But nay...

Those memories were back, this time haunting me more than the last.

"You never lost me, Irina. I was all yours from the start, but for the sake of protecting your reputation. I have to do this, i can't let her reopen the case....", he paused.

"At least, not until the statutes of limitation passes. By then, all the clues would have gone cold and she would be left with nothing to fall back on".

" Wasn't that what you always wanted?"

  • SELENE WOODS    CHAPTER 84

Richard hesitated, his long golden hair falling down his face as he withdrew. Jason hunched over, coughing as he tried catching his breath, he had this annoying victorious look that irked me to no ends. Richard stepped backwards, his head bowed in defeat. He glanced at me, desperately trying to force a genuine smile that never reached his eyes. I clenched my fists, anger brewing in chest. "Who said i'd mind. In fact, i was never here...so let him do as he pleases." - I shook my head, speaking in a cold, frosty tone. I had had enough of Jason, getting rid of him was a better solution - it was like a 'Kill one,end one free',how could i ever afford to pass out on a good deal. Richard shot me a look, a creepy smile curled on his lips. His green eyes shone with a mesmerizing light and somehow,i found it extremely contagious. I bit down my lip, trying so hard not to smile in t

  • SELENE WOODS    CHAPTER 83

I pulled up in a safe distance away, my eyes lingering on Richard's figure as he disappeared into an uncompleted high rise building, the chilling breeze tousling his black coat. I stayed put in my car for a few minutes, giving Richard a head start. Then i hopped out, quietly following his trail. Thin beads of sweat fell down my face, my knees aching as i climbed up the flight of stairs, i held on to the rusty stair railings for support. Panting as i tried catching my breath,i placed my hands over my eyes, mentally counting how many more steps I'd have to climb. I bit down my lip, determination soaring in my heart - Giving up wasn't an option, afterall, I'd come a long way. I patted my chest, sucking it up as i continued my exhausting climb up the stairs, finally reaching the small door that led to the rooftop. "How long does Mr Will wish to hide the truth?".

" Let's get a divorce!" The wind blew... and there was a thick veil of silence between us. Richard buried his hands in his pockets, his eyes no longer resting on me but on the vast sea. "The sea looks beautiful today.... it's like it's shimmering under the sun's rays. We should go to the beach someday." - He gave a warm smile, his eyes squinting. "Don't change the topic." - I spoke coolly. "Richard, let's get a divorce." - I repeated my earlier words calmly. Richard bowed his head, his long blonde hair falling down his gorgeous features. He remained like that for a moment, every moment felt strained and increasingly tensed, i almost couldn't breath. "Why?!" - He asked hoarsely. I felt stunned, ever since we got 'married'.... R

I walked, dressed in an all black outfit. The haunting melody of my heels clicking against the white tiled floors echoed in the hall. I remembered visiting the police station once- the experience was half as pleasant. I sat on a chair, staring at the transparent glass - Irina glared at me as she sat on the other end. She looked haggard, her skin pale, wearing the same old smug pride. I picked up the telephone on my end, watching her pick up hers as she brought it close to her ears. "Have prison been treating you well?." Irina raised a brow at me, her lips pursed in a thin line as she offered no response. I smiled - She had always been the type of person to cry only when she has seen the coffin. "I heard your trial is just a few days away..... and i was wondering, if you were already getting adjusted to your new environmen

  • SELENE WOODS    CHAPTER 80

News about Camille's death spread fast and soon after...her body was found. It was actually Richard's idea to place it in a very common place and that kind of made sense..... Somewhat. The gory news had the entire citizens in an uproar, some already fearing the worst. But trust the police department to give out a well, curated speech about how they're on the case and also promising that the citizens' safety was their upmost priority. Though they didn't give out the news about the killer... according to them, they're still in the middle of investigating and the culprit was yet to be determined. Detective Davis had already told me about Camille's autopsy and his suspicions about it being related to my parents mother, citing that both DNA results collected at the time, matched up perfectly. Meaning that there was a definite culprit, but that was also under thorough scrutiny. He wouldn't say any more than that , which wasn't strange given his usual tight-lipped nature. I stared a

"Selene Woods. Age: 19, gender; female. Daughter to the deceased Mr Ashley and Whitney Woods. State after accident; Critical. Date and time of accident recorded; half past nine on the twenty- fourth of July, 2014.” - The detective paused. I felt a strange chill, a thin veil of sweat covered my body. My hands which had been gripping the stirring wheel tightened, eyes lingering on the traffic lights that had now turned orange. "I also found this amongst the police records. What does Miss Selene have to say about this?" - He added. The traffic lights turned green and i smiled coldly. " What can i say about it......?." - I mused softly . " Unfortunately nothing." " As i had said earlier, i'm just a citizen with a right sense of justice. And i can only achieve that justice by aiding your work, Detective Davis. I already think that i'm on the right path, if i truly wanted to diverge...i would have done things my way from the start." - I spoke humorlessly. Detective Davis exhaled
