EMILY'S POV

I had no idea how long I’d been here.

The dungeon was a world without time. It was just the constant damp smell, the faint trickle of water echoing against the stone, and the gnawing ache in my stomach that seemed to have taken up permanent residence. Minutes, hours, days? They all blurred together. My body screamed for food, my throat ached for water, and yet even in this misery, I didn’t regret kissing him.

My heart betrayed me over and over again, conjuring the memory in vivid flashes I couldn’t escape. The way his body had gone rigid under my lips, then softened just slightly as though for one impossible second he had wanted it too. The heat of his breath, the sharp taste of adrenaline on my tongue, the fire in his eyes when he’d pushed me away. Rage and amusement, swirling together like two storms colliding.

And then his harsh words.

“I see why they would rather sell you off like a cheap whore.”

Every time I thought of them, something inside me splintered. Yet someh

  • SOLD AS THE ALPHA KING'S PET    CHAPTER 14

Emily’s POVFor a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. My heart pounded so loudly that I swore Chris could hear it.And then I looked up.Lucas stood in the entrance of the dungeon. His eyes burned like molten fire, locked on Chris, though I could feel their heat searing me as well. His presence was so overwhelming, that my knees weakened. He was here.I hadn’t expected him. Certainly not charging into the dungeon as if the entire world had conspired to drive him toward me.A rush of something warm and traitorous filled my chest. Relief. Gratitude. Maybe even a tiny spark of joy that he had come. But I buried it quickly. No way was I going to let him see that. Not after everything. Not after being thrown into this cold, damp hole like some kind of criminal.I folded my arms across my chest and tilted my chin, forcing a mask of indifference over my face. “What’s with the dramatic entrance?” I asked, my voice steadier than I felt. “Didn’t realize I was worth throwing swords over

  • SOLD AS THE ALPHA KING'S PET    CHAPTER 12

Lucas’s POVSleep refused to come to me.I lay on my bed staring at the ceiling. The room was dark, but every time I closed my eyes, her face appeared - Emily. That stubborn slip of a girl who had dared to kiss me as if she could tame an Alpha with one reckless act.I could still feel the taste of her lips on mine. Damn it.I turned onto my side, growling low in my throat. I should have forgotten her by now, shoved her out of my mind like I had done with countless others who tried to worm their way into my space. But Emily was not like them. She didn’t cower. She didn’t flatter. She fought, she argued, she tried her possible best to cross every boundary I drew. And now I had sent her away because I had let my temper decide for me.I ran a hand through my hair, frustrated. Was she fine? Did she have water? Food? Or was she sitting somewhere all alone? The thought made my chest tighten in a way I didn’t appreciate. She deserved punishment, yes, but not cruelty. Never cruelty. My eyes bu

Emily’s POVMrs. Higgins’s words kept echoing in my ears long after she had left me in the corridor.“Stay away from that room, child. He is still sensitive about it. Don’t go poking where you have no business.”She had said it with that tone only older women carried—an authority that came not from rank, but from experience. It was a warning I should have heeded to. The way her expression had hardened told me that even she, someone who had lived here longer than most, feared venturing into that room and unlocking the memories it contained. But warnings had never done much for me. Curiosity was always stronger. I told myself that I only wanted to understand Lucas better, that knowing what made him so cold and distant might help me break through. The maid’s words had mentioned his sensitivity and his pain so If I could touch even the edge of it, perhaps I could find a way inside.Besides, I had calculated the risk. Lucas had looked exhausted when he left me. His shoulders had been slump

  • SOLD AS THE ALPHA KING'S PET    CHAPTER 9

LUCAS POV Even with my enhanced hearing, there was nothing but the faint hum of the night. It was the kind of silence that usually settled me. Tonight, though, it unsettled me.I couldn’t stop thinking about her.Emily.The way her head had lolled against the dining chair as if sleep had claimed her mid-breath. The stubborn glimmer in her eyes when she insisted on feeding me, even when I told her not to waste her time. The tremor in her voice as she whispered in her sleep, I don’t want to leave you.It had struck something inside me, something I had no business feeling.I told myself again and again that she wasn’t Clarisse. No one could ever be Clarisse. My sister’s place in my heart had been sealed in blood and grief three years ago. But when I looked at Emily—her vulnerability, her quiet resilience—it was far too easy to imagine echoes of what I had lost.I rubbed a hand down my face and turned away from the empty counter where her food sat, barely touched. I had eaten enough to q
