Explain everything to me!

I was standing in Adolph's room when the words were spoken, my heart racing with a mix of rage, perplexity, and despair. Adolph looked at me, but it was obvious that he was uneasy and unsure of how to handle the feelings that had risen between us.

His voice quivered as he said, "Scarlett," "I... I didn't know how to tell you."

I was unable to muster the will to reply. I was now at my most enraged. My anger had been simmering. I had placed my entire life and heart in Adolph's hands, and now I stood in front of him, staring at the unthinkable.

Adolph inquired, "How are you holding up, Scarlett?" showing his concern for my well being.

The question he asked only served to feed my rage. He knew what he and Louis had talked about and what they had decided on my behalf, so how could he ask me that?

I spoke louder and more vehemently out of exasperation, "Sit down and explain everything to me!"

Adolph complied and sat down on the side of his bed with his shoulders hunched. He started up by de
