Chapter 106

Kaidaira's POV

The sound of metal clashing jerked me out of sleep.

It was faint, but steady, the distinct clank of armor and the dull thuds of heavy boots pounding against packed earth. I sat up in bed, pushing the silk sheets aside and straining my ears. Outside, the courtyard was alive with movement. Wolves. Warriors.

Preparing for war.

I slipped from the bed and moved to the window, pulling the curtain just slightly. From the tower, I could see them... lines of soldiers marching across the yard, weapons glinting in the morning sun.

Horses neighed as they were led into formation. Blacksmiths barked orders as smoke billowed from the forges. Healers rushed across the grounds carrying crates of supplies, herbs, and bandages.

And there it was that sharp, bitter smell that curled around my nose.

Wolfsbane.

I flinched instinctively. Even a trace of it made my stomach turn. The scent was unmistakable, and it hung in the air like a warning.
