Chapter Two : The Rescue

Caroline's POV

The cab left and I was on my way to a friend's place. Maria… she lived about an hour away from my place. I planned to eventually leave the Pack, but step by step was always the way.

A few minutes into the ride, I realised that the driver wasn't moving in the direction that I asked him to. It was at that point that it struck me that there was someone else in the car; a ride I booked, just for myself.

“I'm sorry, Mister, this isn't the way to my destination,” I pointed out to the driver but he said nothing. He only took a cursory glance at me and continued moving.

“Don't worry about that, young lady, he just had to take this route,” the gentleman beside me smiled as he turned to look at me. “By the way, how much do you have in that little bag of yours?”

“Wait… What? What business of yours is that?” I asked in shock, clutching my bag quickly.

That was when it struck me. The man was no cab driver. The mark on the hand of the guy beside me told me all that I needed to know. They were Rogues!

“Let me get down now,” I said, feigning ignorance at what was going on..“Please pull over.”

The driver pressed a button and the door went right open. Then the man beside me pushed me and I went crashing down to the road with a thud, head first.

I couldn't even scream. The pain was so great and I could barely tell what was happening except that I was bleeding profusely and my vision was hazy.

They both walked over to me and one of them grabbed my bag. I tried to move away as they approached me once more, but I couldn't. I was on the verge of passing out.

Yet, suddenly, they both ran back into their car and zoomed off. I couldn't tell why they did that until I felt a hand on my face.

“Who…”

********

“Where am I?” I groaned, still feeling a bit of pain in my head.

“You're finally awake,” an elderly woman said to me, with a smile on her face. “I'll be back.”

She walked out of the room and I gently did my best to sit up on a strange bed, wondering where I was and how I got there.

My head ached a lot as I tried hard to remember how I got there. It got even worse with every attempt. I placed my right hand gently on my head and shut my eyes a bit, gritting my teeth in pain.

“My baby,” I moaned, as I recalled a bit of what happened to me and placed my hands on my stomach.

“Don't worry, your baby is fine.”

I looked up and saw a man walking into the room through the door. He was tall and handsome with a distinctive bald head.

He had a smile on his face the whole time, as he walked straight to a chair beside my bed and sat. He didn't come alone though. He had two women for company; the elderly woman who had a purple scrub on and a young, busty lady with a strange yellow-coloured eyeball who didn't look too pleased to see me.

I heaved a sigh of relief on hearing that my baby was fine. “It's good to finally get the chance to introduce myself to you. I'm Boris, Alpha of the Black Fur Pack. What are you called?” He asked.

“I'm Caroline. It's good to meet you too,” I tiredly voiced, relaxing my head on the wall behind me. It must have been him who saved me from those Rogues. I could tell from his smell.

“Can I call you Caro?” He grinned.

“No,” I shook my head. “That name is only for my husband, or would I say, my ex-husband.”

“I thought as much. No man can ever want to be with a lady like you,” hissed the young lady who had come in with him. “It's a good thing you're awake. You should return to wherever it is that you came from.”

“Stop that, Sarah. That's not the way to treat anyone,” Boris cautioned her quickly before turning to face me. “I'm sorry about that. This is Susan, and she's my friend.”

“Friend… Indeed,” she rolled her eyes and walked out of the room, looking so disgusted. I wondered why she hated me that much. I didn't even know who she was.

“Don't mind her, Alpha Boris,” the nurse said to him. “You know how Sarah can be. It's hard to get her to keep a leash on her tongue.”

“That's Franca, the Pack nurse,” Boris revealed to me even though I had figured that out already. “She has been the one taking care of you since I brought you here. It's been three days already.”

“Thank you, ma'am,” I managed to say, shocked to hear that I was out for as long as three days.

She gave me a curt nod with a smile on her face and then walked away from the room, leaving just Boris and me. “So how did you get yourself entangled with those guys? Where's your husband?”

I sighed as I recalled all that happened. Immediately, tears found their way to my eyes and slowly began to roll down my cheeks.

“I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad or anything,” he apologised. “We can skip all of that for now if you want.”

“No. No. It's fine,” I wiped the tears off. “You saved my life. At least, I owe you an explanation.”

He gazed intently at me and I cleared my throat so I could speak. “I was married to my husband for three years but we had no kids,” I narrated. “On the day that you saw me, I got back from the hospital to break the news of my pregnancy only to find him on the bed with my best friend!”

“What?”

“I confronted them but it didn't end well. He rejected me and sent me away from his house. I was on my way to my friend's place when those Rogues got to me.”

“That man is a beast! He doesn't deserve you,” Boris remarked. “He doesn't deserve this child of yours too. How can he be that cruel?”

His words struck me hard. It was exactly what I thought. I was glad to know that he was a better man. I felt safe with him, even if I felt he'd have to send me back to my Pack once I got better.

“That's all in the past now, Caroline,” he assured me. “You don't have to go back to him. You can choose to stay here instead and start afresh. This Pack is open to you at all times, unless of course, you want to return.”

“I don't want to go back there,” I admitted. “I don't want to ever see that man again or have anything to do with him. Alpha Jon is in my past now. I hope he stays there.”

There was a quick change in his visage as soon as I mentioned that name. A squint immediately appeared on his face but he did his best to force a smile.

“Do you know my ex-husband?” I asked, but the headache came again, and I had to lean back on the wall.”

“Take it easy. You don't want to exert yourself too much,” Boris advised, changing the subject. He brought his hand close to mine slowly and then gently held it. “You can stay here. You and your child will be well taken care of. I'll make sure of that.”

“Thank you,” I whispered in gratitude. I'd have hugged him if I could, but I couldn't. I also took my hand off his and I didn't even know why. I guess it was always going to take some time before I'd let anyone near me.

“I don't want to be a burden to you, though. I would love to have something that I can do, just to be able to help myself,” I said to him and just to make sure he wouldn't object to it, I added a faint, “I insist.”

“Well, then, I have something for you, but it'll have to be when you're perfectly okay,” he sighed. “There's a restaurant not too far from here. The owner needs a waitress. I could put in a word if you want.”

I was not a waitress. Designing and sewing dresses was what I loved to do. Yet I couldn't refuse the offer to not be a liability.

“I do. I'd very much love that,” I smiled.

“That's alright, then,” he stood, walked over to me and gently touched my head. “You need to get some rest. I'll ask the nurse to get your medications.”
