Naomi's POV The first thing I noticed upon waking up was that the world was way too loud. The hum of the fluorescent lights above me sounded like a swarm of angry bees, and the smell of antiseptic was so strong it actually made my eyes water. Then, the memory hit me: the roof, the fall, those deep, impossible blue eyes. I bolted upright, and a sharp pain flared in my side, reminding me that Jax had basically used my ribs as a drum kit yesterday. I didn't care. I scanned the room, but the only person there was a nurse at a desk, typing away and looking bored out of her mind. "You’re awake," she said, not even looking up. "Lie back down, Naomi. You’ve got a concussion and three cracked ribs. You’re lucky to be alive." "Where is he?" I asked, my voice sounding like I had been swallowing sandpaper all night. "The man. The one who brought me here." The nurse finally looked at me, raising a skeptical eyebrow. "Nobody brought you here, honey. One of the night guards found you passed out on the roof access stairs. You probably tripped and hit your head." I shook my head, ignoring the way it made my brain rattle inside my skull. "No. Someone caught me. I felt him. I saw him, I swear it." "Sure you did. Hallucinations are a classic symptom of head trauma," she said, turning back to her screen. "Now, stay put. I need to get your discharge papers ready for the Dean. He’s already breathing down my neck about your graduation status." I didn't listen to another word she said. I could feel it deep in my chest, right where that empty hole used to be…. my wolf. I wasn't alone anymore. I had my wolf now. And she was leading me towards the door. I swung my legs over the side of the bed. My body felt like it was held together by duct tape and was at the verge of falling apart, but the hum under my skin was driving me forward. I had to find him. If he was my mate, he was the answer to everything, my way out of this hellhole, and the reason I was still breathing. I ignored the nurse’s shout as I shoved myself off the bed and bolted for the door. I was shaky, and I had to use the wall for support, but I made it into the hallway. The Academy was buzzing. It was graduation day, and the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and sweat. I was a mess—my hair was a bird’s nest, my uniform was stained with mud and dried blood, and I was pretty sure I looked like a ghost that had climbed out of its grave. I was scanning faces, looking for the face that housed that blue gaze, when I rounded the corner toward the main hall and slammed straight into a wall of solid muscle. The impact sent a jolt through my body, but before I could fall, those same powerful hands from the roof steadied me. The scent hit me like a physical wave. Woodsmoke. It was him. I looked up, and my heart nearly stopped. Up close, in the daylight, he was even more devastating. Devastatingly beautiful. He was wearing a sharp, dark suit that made him look like royalty, and those deep blue eyes were staring down at me. The soul-searing connection was so loud I was surprised people in the next building couldn't hear it. "You," I breathed out, my hands trembling where they rested against his chest. "It’s you. You saved me." I was practically vibrating. I wanted to tell him everything, that my wolf had just woken up and was calling for him. I wanted to tell him that my name was Naomi i, and I had been waiting for this moment since I was a little girl dreaming of a way out. "I... I didn’t think I’d find you so soon," I stammered, a huge, hysterical smile breaking across my face. "My mate. You’re my mate." He didn't say a word. He just held me in silence, his gaze locked on my face. But before he could open his mouth, a shadow fell over us. "Naomi Reed!" The voice was like a bucket of ice water being dumped on me. I turned to see Dean Miller marching toward us, his face twisted in a sneer. He was a tall, thin man who treated the students like cattle, and he had always had a special brand of hatred for me. "What are you doing out of the sickbay?" he snapped, stepping between me and the stranger. He reached out and physically shoved me back, treating me like a piece of trash he had just found on his shoe. "Get to your classroom. Now. You’re already a disgrace to this institution; don't make me add 'public nuisance' to the list." "Wait," I protested, trying to push past him. "I need to speak to him. Dean, you don't understand—" "I understand that you are an anomaly who hasn't even shifted yet," the Dean hissed, his voice low and venomous. "You are a stain on this school. This man is a prestigious guest of the Academy. He doesn't need to be accosted by a delusional, wolf-less girl who looks like she slept in a gutter." He shoved me again, harder this time, forcing me to retreat down the hall. "Move!" Miller barked. "Unless you want to be expelled before the ceremony even starts." I stumbled back, my heart sinking. I looked over the Dean’s shoulder, trying to catch the stranger’s eye one last time. I wanted to see him tell the Dean to back off. I wanted to see him claim me. But the Dean was blocking my view, and the hallway was filling up with other students who were staring and whispering. "Go, Naomi!" Miller ordered. I turned and ran. I didn't have a choice. If I got expelled then, I would lose everything. But as I headed toward my classroom, I was practically floating. He was here. My mate was actually here. The Dean could be as mean as he wanted. The students could talk all they liked. It didn't matter. I had been found. Someone as powerful and handsome as that man belonged to me. He had saved my life, and he was here at the Academy. I imagined him walking into my classroom in a few minutes, telling everyone to shut up, and taking me away from all this. I could already see the look on Helena’s face when she realized the ‘nothing’ girl ended up with the most impressive man in the room. I was so caught up in my own head, so high on the feeling of the bond, that I didn't even look back. If I had, I would have seen the stranger standing in the hallway, watching me go. I would have seen the flash of pure disgust on his face as he wiped his hands on a silk handkerchief, as if touching me had left a layer of filth on his skin. I would have seen him turn to the Dean and say something that made both of them laugh. But I didn't see any of that. I just walked into my classroom with my head held high, thinking my fairy tale was finally starting. I had no idea that the man I had just claimed was about to tear my heart out of my chest in front of the entire world. I was walking into a trap, and I was doing it with a smile on my face.Axel's POVThe morning had been quiet. After Naomi's conversation with her parents, she had seemed lighter—not happy, as that would take time, but lighter, like she had finally put down a weight she had been carrying for years. We spent the morning together in the garden. She didn't talk much, but she didn't need to; she just sat beside me, her head resting on my shoulder, watching the clouds drift across the sky."I feel like I can breathe again," she said at one point.I kissed the top of her head. "Good.""I still don't forgive them not yet.""That's okay.""But I don't hate them either; I just... I need space."I nodded. "You're allowed to need space."She looked up at me. "Thank you for not pushing me to feel differently.""I would never do that."She smiled—a real smile, the first one I had seen in days—and leaned back against me. For a moment, everything felt peaceful, but I should have known it wouldn't last.I watched Naomi as she sat in the garden, her eyes closed, her face
Naomi's POVI woke the next morning with a heavy feeling in my chest. The sun was streaming through the curtains, casting warm light across the room. Axel was still asleep beside me, his arm draped over my waist. I watched him for a moment, grateful for the steady rise and fall of his chest, the calm expression on his face.He had stayed with me through everything. He hadn't pushed me to forgive anyone. He hadn't told me how to feel. He had just been there.I carefully slipped out of bed, trying not to wake him. I walked to the window and looked out at the Lycan kingdom. It was peaceful here. Quiet. Nothing like the chaos of the BlackRose Pack. But even here, the past followed me.I thought about Helena. About Liam. About the parents who had raised me and lied to me for years. I thought about Cressida—my real mother—and wondered what she was like. Where she was. Why she had given me up.I didn't have answers. I wasn't sure I ever would.A soft knock came at the door.I turned, surpris
Naomi's POVThe hall was quiet after Liam left.I stood on the platform beside Axel, my legs still shaky from everything that had happened. Helena was on the floor, the adoption papers scattered around her like fallen leaves. Her parents sat frozen in their chairs, their faces pale and drawn. No one spoke.I didn't know what to feel. Everything had happened so fast. One moment I was learning that my entire life had been a lie, and the next, Helena's world was crumbling in front of me.Part of me wanted to feel satisfied. She had made my life miserable for years. She had lied, manipulated, and destroyed everything she touched. She deserved this. But another part of me—a part I didn't want to acknowledge—felt something else. Something that felt dangerously close to pity.I pushed the feeling away."Take her to the holding cells," Axel ordered. The guards moved toward Helena, but before they could grab her, she scrambled to her feet."No!" She backed away, her eyes wild. "You can't do th
Helena's POVThe guards dragged me back into the hall without warning.I stumbled through the doors, my wrists still aching from where they had grabbed me. My hair was a mess, my clothes wrinkled from being thrown back into the cell. I didn't care. I was too angry to care about anything."This is ridiculous!" I shouted, trying to pull free from their grip. "You can't keep treating me like a criminal!"No one answered. The hall was the same as before, but the atmosphere had shifted. The air felt heavier. My parents were still there, standing near the platform with their heads bowed. Axel was in his place, his expression cold and unreadable. And Naomi...Naomi was standing beside him, holding a stack of papers in her hands. My heart skipped a beat when I saw them. I recognized those papers. They were the documents I had given Axel. The ones the cloaked man had provided. Why was Naomi holding them?"Sit down, Helena," Axel said.I remained standing. "I'm not sitting anywhere until someon
Axel's POVThe doors had barely closed behind Naomi's parents when I realized we weren't done.I had sent them to the guest quarters to give Naomi space, but the truth was still incomplete. They had revealed Cressida's name a woman who wasn't human—and then stopped. They had given us pieces of a puzzle without showing us the full picture.I couldn't let that stand.Naomi was still in my arms, her body trembling against mine. She hadn't spoken since her parents were led away. She was processing, I knew. Trying to make sense of everything she had just learned. But I needed answers.I pulled back slightly and looked down at her. "Naomi, I need to talk to them again."She looked up at me, her eyes red and swollen. "Why?""Because they haven't told us everything. They mentioned Cressida, but they didn't explain who she is or why you were switched. We need the full story."Naomi was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded slowly. "You're right. I need to know."I took her hand. "We'll do this
Naomi's POVThe next three days passed slower than any days I had ever experienced.I barely slept. I barely ate. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Helena's face, heard her voice, felt the cold satisfaction in her words. You were a stray. You were never a Reed.Axel had been patient with me. He had stayed by my side, held me when I needed it, and given me space when I didn't. But I knew he was just as anxious as I was. He had summoned my parents to the Lycan kingdom, and they were due to arrive today.I stood by the window of our room, staring out at the road that led to the main gates. The morning sun was bright, but I felt cold."What if they don't come?" I asked quietly.Axel walked up behind me and placed his hands on my shoulders. "They'll come.""How can you be sure?""Because they know what happens if they don't."I turned to look at him. His expression was calm, but there was a hard edge to his eyes that I had seen before. It was the look he got when someone threatened someth
Chapter 5Naomi's POVThe banquet hall was a sea of gold to say the least. I felt awfully small and almost non-existent. And with how underdressed I was? Yeah, I was this close to bolting. I was standing near the buffet table, my fingers trembling as I held a glass of water I was too nauseous to
Chapter 4Naomi's POVThe classroom was as busy as a fucking beehive. Normally, everyone was trying to cram for the final theory exams or talking about who was going to get which pack placement, but today was different. The air felt heavier than it did when preparing for a storm or something. I wa
Chapter 2Naomi's POVPain was a funny thing. After a while, it stopped feeling like sharp stabs and started feeling like a heavy, wet blanket wrapped around my entire soul.I didn't know how long I had laid in that mud, but by the time I managed to roll onto my stomach and push myself up, the cou
Chapter 1Naomi's POVDeath. It was the one thing I had so badly wished for at that moment. I couldn't take it anymore and was done with the pathetic thing that was supposed to be a life."Such a filthy anomaly.""Traitor!!""She's more than a witch. Let her burn!!"The words were being screamed at
