Naomi's POV Pain was a funny thing. After a while, it stopped feeling like sharp stabs and started feeling like a heavy, wet blanket wrapped around my entire soul. I didn't know how long I had laid in that mud, but by the time I managed to roll onto my stomach and push myself up, the courtyard was empty. I could see the lights in the distance though. It was impossible to miss it with how brightly it was glowing, and the sound of music from the pre-graduation party was drifting over the grass. They were celebrating. They were having the time of their lives while I was here… bleeding. I dragged myself toward the north wing, my ribs screaming with every movement I took. I didn't want to go to the infirmary. Going there meant seeing the pity in the nurse’s eyes, or worse, seeing Helena there pretending to check on me. No, I had a different destination in mind. It took me forever to climb the stairs to the highest rooftop of the academy. My breath came in short, ragged gasps, and I had to stop every few steps to make sure I wasn't going to pass out. Eventually, I pushed open the heavy metal door and stepped out into the night. The wind up here was crazy. It howled through the old pillars, whipping my hair across my face and stinging the cuts on my cheeks. I walked toward the edge slowly. This was it. The end of the line. I looked down at the abyss, and it looked so peaceful. Once I jumped, I’d no longer be an anomaly. I wouldn't be a punching bag to Helena any more. There'd be no more watching the girl who had ruined my life play the saint while I was treated like trash. At twenty-one, the clock had officially run out. I was a wolf-less nothing, a glitch in a world built for predators. I closed my eyes and let the wind push against my chest. It felt like the wolf I never had was finally calling to me, but she was calling from the bottom of those rocks. Wait. I gripped the edge of the stone railing, my knuckles turning white. Why was I doing this? Because they hated me? Because Helena won? A sudden, sharp spark of heat flared in my chest. It wasn't sadness, nor was it even fear. The thing I was feeling was pure, unadulterated spite. If I jumped right then, Helena would win the ultimate prize. She would probably give a tearful speech at my funeral, wearing some designer black dress. Everyone would talk about how kind she was for trying to save the unstable Naomi. My death would become another brick in her castle of lies. She would get to be the grieving best friend, the girl who tried so hard to help the poor, broken anomaly. I wouldn't just be dead….no, I would be her final masterpiece. "Forget that." "I’m not giving her the satisfaction," I whispered into the wind. My voice was tiny, but it felt crazily loud in my head. "If I’m going to go down, I’m going to go down fighting. I’m going to stay alive just to be a thorn in her side. I’m going to live because she wants me gone." I let out a shaky breath and started to turn away from the ledge. I was done with standing on the fucking edge. I was going to go back down, find a way to survive the graduation expulsion, and maybe—just maybe—find a way to make her pay. But as I took my first step back toward the door, something inside me snapped. This wasn't a metaphor though. I literally heard something breaking. Like some bone breaking or….or a drum being struck inside my skull. One second I was standing there, and the next, my entire body was flooded with a violent, feverish heat. It felt like someone had poured molten lead into my veins. My heart hammered against my ribs so hard I thought they would actually shatter. I fell to my knees, clawing at my chest. The world started to spin. Colors I had never seen before began to bleed into the darkness of the night. Every scent in the air—the rain, the pine trees, the sweat on my own skin—became a thousand times bolder. My wolf. After twenty-one years of silence, she was waking up. And she was tearing her way out of me like she was angry she had been kept waiting so long. The heat was unbearable. It felt like hell. Fuck, it hurt. It hurt. I felt like my skin was going to melt off my bones. I tried to crawl toward the center of the roof, but my balance was completely gone. My head was swimming, and the world was tilting at a forty-five-degree angle. My hands slipped on the wet gravel. "No, no, no." I reached out for the railing, but my fingers brushed empty air. My heart stopped for a completely different reason as I realized I had staggered the wrong way. The wind, which had been pushing me back, suddenly felt like it was pulling me over. I felt my feet leave the solid stone. The dark abyss rushed up to meet me, and a silent scream died in my throat. I was falling. It was my insane reality. But I didn't hit the rocks. Instead, I felt a pair of massive, powerful hands grab my arms and yank me backward with a force that nearly dislocated my shoulders. I was slammed into a chest that radiated a heat so intense it made the fever in my blood feel cold by comparison. I couldn't breathe nor think. All I could feel was the person holding me. They were solid, like a mountain, and they smelled like woodsmoke. It was almost addictive. My vision was a hazy mess of gray and black, but I forced my eyes to open. I needed to see who had caught me. I looked up, and for a second, the world went completely still. I was looking into a pair of eyes that looked like the deepest part of the ocean. They were blue, but a blue so dark and intense it felt like I was drowning in them. He was beautiful in a way that was almost terrifying—all sharp angles and shadows. But it wasn't just his face; it was the feeling. The moment our eyes locked, the screaming wolf in my head went silent. A single word echoed through my entire soul, vibrating in my bones and marking me in a way I knew I could never undo. "Mate." The word was so loud it was the only thing I could hear. My soul recognized him before my brain even had a chance to catch up. He was mine, and I was his. I tried to say something, to ask him who he was or how he had found me, but the heat of my awakening and the shock of the fall finally caught up to me. My strength evaporated. The blue depths of his eyes were the last thing I saw before the edges of my vision crumbled and the world turned pitch black for real this time. I was falling again, but this time, I knew I wasn't going to hit the ground. I was safe in the arms of the man who was meant for me. Or so I thought….Axel's POVThe morning had been quiet. After Naomi's conversation with her parents, she had seemed lighter—not happy, as that would take time, but lighter, like she had finally put down a weight she had been carrying for years. We spent the morning together in the garden. She didn't talk much, but she didn't need to; she just sat beside me, her head resting on my shoulder, watching the clouds drift across the sky."I feel like I can breathe again," she said at one point.I kissed the top of her head. "Good.""I still don't forgive them not yet.""That's okay.""But I don't hate them either; I just... I need space."I nodded. "You're allowed to need space."She looked up at me. "Thank you for not pushing me to feel differently.""I would never do that."She smiled—a real smile, the first one I had seen in days—and leaned back against me. For a moment, everything felt peaceful, but I should have known it wouldn't last.I watched Naomi as she sat in the garden, her eyes closed, her face
Naomi's POVI woke the next morning with a heavy feeling in my chest. The sun was streaming through the curtains, casting warm light across the room. Axel was still asleep beside me, his arm draped over my waist. I watched him for a moment, grateful for the steady rise and fall of his chest, the calm expression on his face.He had stayed with me through everything. He hadn't pushed me to forgive anyone. He hadn't told me how to feel. He had just been there.I carefully slipped out of bed, trying not to wake him. I walked to the window and looked out at the Lycan kingdom. It was peaceful here. Quiet. Nothing like the chaos of the BlackRose Pack. But even here, the past followed me.I thought about Helena. About Liam. About the parents who had raised me and lied to me for years. I thought about Cressida—my real mother—and wondered what she was like. Where she was. Why she had given me up.I didn't have answers. I wasn't sure I ever would.A soft knock came at the door.I turned, surpris
Naomi's POVThe hall was quiet after Liam left.I stood on the platform beside Axel, my legs still shaky from everything that had happened. Helena was on the floor, the adoption papers scattered around her like fallen leaves. Her parents sat frozen in their chairs, their faces pale and drawn. No one spoke.I didn't know what to feel. Everything had happened so fast. One moment I was learning that my entire life had been a lie, and the next, Helena's world was crumbling in front of me.Part of me wanted to feel satisfied. She had made my life miserable for years. She had lied, manipulated, and destroyed everything she touched. She deserved this. But another part of me—a part I didn't want to acknowledge—felt something else. Something that felt dangerously close to pity.I pushed the feeling away."Take her to the holding cells," Axel ordered. The guards moved toward Helena, but before they could grab her, she scrambled to her feet."No!" She backed away, her eyes wild. "You can't do th
Helena's POVThe guards dragged me back into the hall without warning.I stumbled through the doors, my wrists still aching from where they had grabbed me. My hair was a mess, my clothes wrinkled from being thrown back into the cell. I didn't care. I was too angry to care about anything."This is ridiculous!" I shouted, trying to pull free from their grip. "You can't keep treating me like a criminal!"No one answered. The hall was the same as before, but the atmosphere had shifted. The air felt heavier. My parents were still there, standing near the platform with their heads bowed. Axel was in his place, his expression cold and unreadable. And Naomi...Naomi was standing beside him, holding a stack of papers in her hands. My heart skipped a beat when I saw them. I recognized those papers. They were the documents I had given Axel. The ones the cloaked man had provided. Why was Naomi holding them?"Sit down, Helena," Axel said.I remained standing. "I'm not sitting anywhere until someon
Axel's POVThe doors had barely closed behind Naomi's parents when I realized we weren't done.I had sent them to the guest quarters to give Naomi space, but the truth was still incomplete. They had revealed Cressida's name a woman who wasn't human—and then stopped. They had given us pieces of a puzzle without showing us the full picture.I couldn't let that stand.Naomi was still in my arms, her body trembling against mine. She hadn't spoken since her parents were led away. She was processing, I knew. Trying to make sense of everything she had just learned. But I needed answers.I pulled back slightly and looked down at her. "Naomi, I need to talk to them again."She looked up at me, her eyes red and swollen. "Why?""Because they haven't told us everything. They mentioned Cressida, but they didn't explain who she is or why you were switched. We need the full story."Naomi was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded slowly. "You're right. I need to know."I took her hand. "We'll do this
Naomi's POVThe next three days passed slower than any days I had ever experienced.I barely slept. I barely ate. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Helena's face, heard her voice, felt the cold satisfaction in her words. You were a stray. You were never a Reed.Axel had been patient with me. He had stayed by my side, held me when I needed it, and given me space when I didn't. But I knew he was just as anxious as I was. He had summoned my parents to the Lycan kingdom, and they were due to arrive today.I stood by the window of our room, staring out at the road that led to the main gates. The morning sun was bright, but I felt cold."What if they don't come?" I asked quietly.Axel walked up behind me and placed his hands on my shoulders. "They'll come.""How can you be sure?""Because they know what happens if they don't."I turned to look at him. His expression was calm, but there was a hard edge to his eyes that I had seen before. It was the look he got when someone threatened someth
Chapter 5Naomi's POVThe banquet hall was a sea of gold to say the least. I felt awfully small and almost non-existent. And with how underdressed I was? Yeah, I was this close to bolting. I was standing near the buffet table, my fingers trembling as I held a glass of water I was too nauseous to
Chapter 4Naomi's POVThe classroom was as busy as a fucking beehive. Normally, everyone was trying to cram for the final theory exams or talking about who was going to get which pack placement, but today was different. The air felt heavier than it did when preparing for a storm or something. I wa
Chapter 3Naomi's POVThe first thing I noticed upon waking up was that the world was way too loud. The hum of the fluorescent lights above me sounded like a swarm of angry bees, and the smell of antiseptic was so strong it actually made my eyes water. Then, the memory hit me: the roof, the fall,
Chapter 1Naomi's POVDeath. It was the one thing I had so badly wished for at that moment. I couldn't take it anymore and was done with the pathetic thing that was supposed to be a life."Such a filthy anomaly.""Traitor!!""She's more than a witch. Let her burn!!"The words were being screamed at
