Emily’s POV…

My three-year-long facade of happiness finally came to an end in a single day. How did this happen? I’ll tell you. It all started the day I caught him cheating on me. I stood there frozen in the doorway like a block of ice. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it in my ears.

The scene in front of me felt like a cruel joke- Daniel, this same man I had loved for three years, was there before me, tangled up with another woman in our bed. I repeat- OUR bed.

At first, neither of them noticed me, but when Daniel finally looked up, his expression wasn’t one of guilt or regret. It was annoyance. As if I were the one who had done something wrong.

“Emily,” he said, casually pulling the sheet over himself. “You weren’t supposed to be home yet.”

That was it. No apologies. No frantic explanations. Just those cold, indifferent words that sliced through me like a knife.

The bitch beside him- brunette, sat up smirking- she didn’t even bother covering up. She just raised an eyebrow, as if I were the one intruding.

Right there and then, I felt something inside me crack wide open.

I had imagined a future with this man. A life. Marriage, a home, maybe even kids. I had given him three years of my life, my time, my trust. And this was how he repaid me?

My vision blurred with tears, but I refused to let them fall. I wouldn’t give him that satisfaction.

“So, this is who you are,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “This is what I meant to you?”

Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Emily, come on. Don’t be dramatic. These things happen.”

These things happen. These things happen. Are you seriously kidding me right now?

I almost laughed. Almost, but instead, I did the only thing I could- I turned on my heel and walked away.

I didn’t pack a bag. I didn’t scream or cry or beg him to explain. I just left, because if Daniel Sinclair had just shown me who he truly was, I wasn’t going to waste another second pretending he was someone else.

I was done.

But as I stepped out into the cold night, one thought lingered in my mind.

What now?

To be honest, I didn’t know the answer to that. All I knew was that I couldn’t wait to be out of here in a flash. Anywhere but here.

***

***3 MONTHS LATER***

I adjusted the strap of my midnight-blue gown and forced a polite smile as I stepped into the glittering ballroom. The Monarch Foundation Charity Gala was the kind of event I usually avoided- wealthy elites, overpriced champagne, and empty small talk- but my boss had insisted I attend to represent our company.

I had prepared myself for an evening of forced pleasantries and networking. What I hadn’t prepared for was bumping into a Sinclair. Yes, they were present at this gala. Thankfully, not Daniel though, but his parents and older brother, Ethan. I should have known. The Sinclair family had deep ties to the Monarch Foundation so of course they would be here.

I tugged at the hem of my gown, reminding myself that I was here for work, not to admire the extravagance, not to think about him or anything that had to do with him.

My ex.

I dreaded the possibility of running into him tonight, but after scanning the room twice, I heaved a sigh of relief- Daniel wasn’t here.

Good.

I made my way toward the bar, weaving through clusters of socialites and business moguls, when-

Oof!

A firm chest stopped me in my tracks. The collision sent a slight jolt through me, and I quickly stepped back, flustered.

"Whoa. Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you," a deep, smooth voice said.

I looked up—and immediately froze.

Ethan Sinclair.

Daniel’s older brother.

How had he appeared here in only a matter of seconds?

My eyes didn’t resist scanning him from head to toe. Up close, he was even more striking than I remembered—tall, broad-shouldered, effortlessly commanding in a tailored black tux. His piercing blue eyes studied me with mild amusement, as if he were trying to place where he knew me from.

Then recognition flickered across his face. "Emily Carter."

My stomach clenched. Of course, he remembered me, though it took a while for him to recall. I had been with Daniel for three years, after all. But the way he said my name—curious, not dismissive—caught me off guard.

"Ethan," I said, regaining my composure. "I didn’t expect to see you here."

He arched a brow. "Likewise. It’s been a while."

"Yeah," I said, forcing a polite smile. "Almost a year." Since I last saw him, of course. He and Daniel barely spent time with each other. If you didn’t know them on a close level like I did, you would’ve never believe they were related. The two brothers always acted like distant cousins whenever they saw each other.

They also had entirely different personalities. Ethan was aloof and rumored to have been with many women. I also heard he’s never gone out with the same woman twice. He was also very competent and wealthy, much more accomplished than his brother. Daniel, on the other hand was calmer when it came to money and women.

Enough thinking about Daniel. I groaned inwardly.

Ethan studied me for a beat, his gaze sharp but unreadable. "Didn’t think these kinds of events were your thing."

I huffed a soft laugh. "They’re not. I’m here for work."

His lips quirked. "Ah. So you got roped into it, too."

"Something like that," I admitted.

A moment of silence settled between us, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. There was something different about Ethan—he wasn’t filling the space with empty small talk, wasn’t looking at me with the same arrogance his brother had always carried.

Before I could say anything else, a waiter passed by, offering a tray of champagne. Ethan plucked two glasses and held one out to me.

"Since we’re both stuck here," he said, tilting his head slightly, "might as well make it interesting."

I hesitated—then, with a small smirk, took the glass from him. At that moment, a wicked idea formed in my head. If Daniel could replace me so easily, why shouldn’t I have a little fun of my own?

"Alright, Sinclair," I said, lifting my flute. "Let’s see what you’ve got."

Emily’s POV…Ethan studied me over the rim of his glass, his sharp blue eyes filled with quiet amusement. He didn’t smile-not fully- but there was something in his expression that told me he wasn’t used to being challenged. "Alright, Sinclair. Let’s see what you’ve got."He let a beat of silence pass, as if assessing me, before taking a slow sip of his drink. When he finally spoke, his voice was slow, deliberate. "That depends," he said, tilting his head slightly. "Are we talking business or something else?"I smirked. "Wouldn’t you like to know?"Ethan let out a quiet chuckle—low, deep, the kind that sent a strange thrill down my spine. "I usually don’t play games," he said, watching me with an intensity that made my stomach tighten.“That’s funny,” I replied, swirling the champagne in my glass. “Because you’ve been staring at me like you’re already playing one.” His gaze didn’t waver. If anything, it darkened slightly. “Maybe I’m just trying to figure out your angle.”I took a sl

Emily’s POV… I stared at the business card in my hand, my heart pounding as I tapped Ethan’s number into my phone. Olivia sat beside me, practically vibrating with excitement, mouthing “do it,” over and over again. With a deep breath, I hit call. It rang twice before a deep, familiar voice answered. “Carter” My breath caught at the way he said my last name—calm, controlled, effortlessly powerful.“Ethan,” I said, trying to sound composed. “It’s Emily.”There was a beat of silence. Not the awkward kind. The calculated kind. Like he wasn’t surprised I had called—but he was still deciding what to do with that information.“I see you took my offer,” he finally said.I smirked slightly. “That depends. What exactly was your offer?”A quiet chuckle. Low. Amused. “Why don’t you come by my office tomorrow, and we’ll find out?”I hesitated. “Your office?”“Yes. Unless you’d prefer somewhere else?” His tone was smooth, unreadable.“No, your office is fine,” I said quickly, gripping the phon

Emily’s POV… Ethan pulled back abruptly, his breathing uneven. His grip on my waist tightened for just a second before he forced himself to let go. His forehead nearly touched mine as he exhaled slowly. “We’re not doing this here.” I, still still dazed from the heat of his kiss, smirked. “So where, then?” Ethan stepped back, shaking his head, his expression unreadable. “Emily.”I titled my head, eyes gleaming with challenge. “My apartment.” A dark chuckle escaped him, but there was no amusement in it- just something dangerous. He studied me, his gaze trailing over my face as if searching for hesitation. “You don’t stop pushing, do you?” he muttered. “Not when I want something.”His jaw tightened. “You should be careful about that.”I took a step closer, deliberately, testing him. “Why? Because you’re not like your brother?”Ethan’s expression darkened instantly. His eyes flashed with something almost lethal, but his voice remained controlled. Too controlled.“No, Emily. I’m not

Emily’s POV… I stirred as the soft morning light streamed through my bedroom window, casting a warm glow over the sheets. The first thing I became aware of was the soreness in my body—a reminder of exactly how last night had unfolded. The second thing? The steady, solid warmth beside me. Ethan was still here. I blinked, my head turning slowly on the pillow. He was lying on his back, one arm resting behind his head, the other draped loosely over his stomach. He’d been awake, watching me for a while. I swallowed, suddenly unsure of what to say. “You stayed.” Ethan’s lips twitched, but he didn’t move. “I did.” That was unexpected. Ethan Sinclair wasn’t the type to linger. He wasn’t the type to entertain repeats- at least that’s what I’d always heard. And yet, here he was. Before I could over-think it, he shifted, reaching over to brush a strand of hair from my face. His fingers were warm, his touch, too gentle for a man who had been anything but last night. “What are you doing

Emily’s POVThe black sedan pulled to a halt in front of my apartment. I clutched onto the thin strap of my purse, avoiding his gaze. My heart slammed against my ribs, feeling a moment of hesitation. I was about to slide out of the passenger seats before my hand could reach the door handle when Ethan's hand landed on my wrist, closing around it. His grasp was firm but not harsh as if he never wanted to let me go."Emily -" He began, voice low and deep."No," I interjected, yanking his hand free from my wrist. "I understand; I have clearly said that multiple times," I said, my voice coming steadier than I had imagined. I slid out of the car, closing the door with a sharp click.I felt his eyes on me, watching me for minutes as if he was expecting me to turn back and meet him. I didn't look back; instead, I hurried up, hastening my steps, gripping my small purse tightly until I reached my front door.I unlocked the door and went inside. EMILY’S POVA sudden knock came on my apartment door, loud and unexpected. I flinched slightly, and my head turned towards the entrance door."Babes, please hold on. Someone is knocking on my door," I said, to Olivia over the phone, my voice tightening."Are you expecting anyone, Emily," Olivia asked, and I nodded negatively as if she could see me."Not at all, I'm not expecting anyone," I responded."Maybe you should ignore it," Emily suggested, and I nodded in agreement. "I think I'll agree with you. I'm not expecting anyone," I replied, and just then I heard another loud bang on my door.My eyes went to the door, my mind racing with various thoughts. I'm not expecting anyone. No texts? No calls? -- just nothingCould it be Ethan? Maybe he's back and if he's the one, why is he here? I thought he didn't want to ruin his reputation. EMILY POVI shut the door to my apartment and leaned against it, releasing the breath I didn't realize I was holding.I shut my eyes, as my mind wondered why Daniel had come to my house in such a drunken state. Does he want to reconnect with me? I heard a muffled snore of Daniel as he banged the door hard."Emily!""Emily!" Olivia's voice cut through my world as I recalled that I was conversing with her over the phone."Olivia," I called, my voice barely above a whisper. "I left him outside, and I'm fine, I'm safe," Reassuring myself and her."Good!" She said, her voice firm. "Let him be, he will be fine. When he comes back to his senses, he will leave your doorstep. I need to handle that brat."I chuckled at her word 'handle'. She wants to handle a son of the Sinclair family, a powerful and influential family at that."Just don't get yourself into trouble. Ethan's sudden question and my silence, being unable to answer his question. Daniel's drunken appearances at my doorstep.I splashed cold water on my face, to regain posture and stop myself from getting distracted. My phone buzzed in my jogger's pant pocket, and I picked it up to see Olivia’s name flashing across the screen. I pressed “Answer” before the third ring."Emily!" Olivia's voice came up. "Hope you're good. Hope you're not wallowing in thoughts?" Her voice was laced with concern.I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "I guess so," I admitted."It's a yes. That's good, get dressed and meet me at K Lounge in thirty minutes. The last thing I wanted was for her to put two and two together.I held my breath for a few more moments, counting the seconds in my head as I waited for her footsteps to fade down the hallway. When the silence was absolute, I dared to open the door slightly, just enough to peek out. My heart still raced, but thankfully, the hallway was empty. That was too close.I closed the door quietly behind me, taking a deep, steadying breath. I needed to leave. The faint scent of his cologne still lingered in the air as his arms made me feel safe, comfortable.....secured, almost like we are the only one on earth.I shifted and turned to face him. His dark hair tousled from sleep. I smiled softly, taking in the sight of him. He looks so at peace, vulnerable in a way that he didn't let anyone see. My fingers trace the contours of his face.Ethan stirred, blinking his eyes as it met mine. There was that look in his eyes, something deep and unspoken, like there was so much he wanted to say but for some reason he didn't."Good morning," I whispered, my voice thick with sleep."Morning," He replied, his voice low and rough. Consultation turned into paid request and I found myself doing something I enjoyed, doing something I can do at my comfort zone.I wasn't serving anyone again. Now a self made boss. I was a building. In the afternoon, I sat on the dynamite titles, adjusting the glasses on my eyes..I was in the middle of a wedding concept for a bride that had approached me on Epitok..She wanted her gown modern, minimal and breathtaking. Have you meet her personally before?""I haven't meet her personally before. I don't even know her, I only got to know all thanks to the introduction you did at the gala. I think they are getting suspicious about me and Ethan relationship.
