View MoreThe hall was decorated and ready for the occasion. Adults, male and female trouped into the expanse with their handbags and purses, all dressed and ready for the exhibition.
After so many months of planning the high-profile occasion for CEOs and entrepreneurs, it finally came to pass in the hearts of New York. Amongst all who walked into the hall stood Emily Hartley, a woman in her twenties and staff at NovesTech corporates. Her black gown fitted well in her petite body, and so was her blonde hair fixed into curls to match the golden shoe on her feet."I should not be here," she acknowledged. "This is the last place to be in." She declared again, walking into the hall. It felt like all eyes were on her, and she didn't appreciate the fact that she took an appeal on the occasion."I mean, I could have watched it live from home," she muttered, identifying a woman from her office. "You don't say!""Miss Hartley," the woman who she recognized, identified her as well and walked in her direction. "I thought you were not supposed to be here in the first place.""Shouldn't I be?" Emily asked, growing a smile on her lips. "I thought I should be, Mrs. Blackwell.""It's nice to see you at the occasion, anyway," Mrs. Blackwell said, taking her hand briefly. "But we know you don't have to be here.""It is not obligatory, Victoria," Emily replied. "I know my position in the company does not conform to this occasion. But we are learners, and I am here to discover. So are you.""I see," Victoria said. "How is it coming with you?""Very well," the younger lady answered, taking a glass of wine from the man with the tray. "This occasion is one we waited for, almost all our lives.""Hmm hmm," Victoria nodded in agreement. "I have waited for it all these months. I hear that one of the multi-billionaires in New York would grace the occasion.""I heard too," Emily said, sipping from the glass. "I came with my Bic and note. Everything that is said will be jotted down, and recorded on my phone!" She waved her handbag in Victoria's face."This is alcohol," Victoria cried. "How was I supposed to know they serve alcohol on a business occasion?""Hello?" A male's voice cut short the moment. The women veered around to see who it was and unfurled their mouths in astonishment."Hello," Emily greeted first, straightening her dress. "I'm sorry, are you lost?""Hello again," the man greeted. "Do I have to get misplaced before halting to speak with you?""Of all people in this hall," Victoria cut in. "We are the last people you want to hold a dialogue with, Mr. Stone.""This is no dream, is it?" Emily asked, facing Victoria for a second. "Alexander Stone, or are you twin to him?""Last I checked, I don't have a twin," he laughed at the woman's remark. "May I know your name?"She nodded, not speaking yet. He was the multi-billionaire Victoria referred to a few moments ago, and from her response, she sounded like she didn't care about him gracing the occasion or not.Good God! She cares. "My name is Emily," she introduced, taking his outstretched hand. "Emily Hartley.""I am—""Alexander Stone," she cut him short. "I know who you are. You are a multi-billionaire and CEO of Stone Enterprise.""Well, it's not so big," he cracked up, his short auburn curly hair shifting from its initial position. "I thought I could speak to someone before the occasion started.""Ohh, yes," she assured him, turning to see Victoria. But the woman was gone. "She is my colleague.""She left a while ago," he told her. "While you were introducing yourself.""So what do I do for you while the program is yet to begin?""A little secret about you won't be bad, will it?" The man asked, chuckling. "Don't mind me, have you grabbed a seat?""No, not yet.""We should grab one for you already. Don't you think so, Emily Hartley?"The amazement of meeting with the last person she imagined, dominated her. Jesus Christ! She thought he stopped to speak with Victoria, as Victoria claimed she knew a lot of people in the hall than she did.He looked attractive in a suit, and his curly hair did a perfect job on his small face. His perfume stung her in the nose, and she suffocated in its sweetness. But what will this man want with her? She was not even a CEO or entrepreneur."So, are you a CEO?"Emily scoffed, exactly what she thought he would ask her."I wish," she smiled at him, taking his hand while they walked in a row of arranged chairs. "I am an ordinary staff member, Mr. Stone. You have every right to leave me and go find a fellow CEO.""Come on!" He let out a laugh. "Who says I need a CEO friend? Or do you not know these are competitors in the business field?""I don't know," she scoffed. "My status in my place of work is the lowest. I came here to gain some knowledge and go back to my house. That's all I need for tonight.""Is it?"She took a seat, straightening her dress on the chair. Her handbag dropped to the floor on her command after picking up her Bic and notebook. "Yes, it is," she replied after a long thought. "So, please mind the speech you give to us tonight, I've got a lot to take home with me."Alexander chuckled. "I don't regret ending whatever conversation you and that woman were having.""Nah," it was her turn to chuckle. "You saved my ass, you don't know.""Well," he said this time, rising to his feet. "I guess I'd see you around after the occasion. We should talk about what you learnt, and I'd love to see how pretty your handwriting is.""I don't know, Mr. Stone," she fumbled with words. "I may head home immediately. I didn't come to make friends at the occasion."He loved her sharp mouth. "Not even with a CEO?""Well…""I'd see you around." He said this time, finding his way out of the row.Olivia walked out of the kitchen with two trays and positioned them on the table. Where was Emily?Past eight in the night and she was yet to return from the Enterprise. Such a thing rarely happened and when it did, there was a problem. She grabbed the glasses on the table and headed to the kitchen. By the time she returned, the door made a sound. “Emily?” Olivia positioned the new set of glasses on the table and walked to the door. She unlocked it from inside and when it opened, there was Emily at the entrance of the apartment. “Well, what happened to you?” There was worry in her tone. She supervised the older woman walking into the house, while she latched the door and veered around. “Emily, did something happen at work?”“Good evening, Liv,” Emily, who was exhausted, plopped down on one of the couches. “I was assisting Mark with his task. He had a lot to do at work today.”“Ohh,” Olivia sauntered past her and caught up with the dining table. “I organized something for us to eat
“Emily Hartley!” Mark stepped into her office without knocking. He had a smile plastered on his countenance and something she could not plainly catch a glimpse of was in his hands. “Mark!” She dubbed, recuperating from the shock she encountered when he bumped into her expanse, screaming her name. “What's up?”Pointing out the look on her face, he halted halfway. “I frightened you, forgive me.” He started to walk again, then put up with a seat opposite her. “I was asked to pass information to you, that's why I am here.”“Is everything OK?” She sat up and asked, and then her eyes flitted to the item in his hand. “What do you have there, Mark?”The man cracked up and positioned the card on the table before passing it to the other side so her hand could touch. “Mr. Stone asked me to give this to you.”What is it? She wanted to ask. But on second thought, she took the yield of the card, unfurled it and wheezed the next moment. “Yeah—” Mark was loving the reaction on her countenance. “Yo
The door of his office pushed open and with this, he caught sight of her at the entrance. “Katherine!” A smile came live on his face as he modelled up on his seat. He made a gesture with one of his hands, pointing to one of the vacant chairs opposite him. “Come on. Take a seat.”With a smile on her face, and bobbing of her head—Katherine made it to one of the seats. “I am sorry I took so long, Mr. Steele,” she lowered the file she came with, on the desk. “She came a bit late.”“Were you able to make her speak?” The worried man asked. “Did she tell you anything at all?”“No,” Katherine shook her head. “She didn't say anything to me at all. I feel I am not good at a task like this. It feels as though she is hiding something and doesn't want to talk to me about it.”"Damn it!" Jonathan slammed one of his hands on the table. “Why do I get this feeling that the woman is up to something?” The worried man asked. “Not on a mission of her own, but with someone and that person is none other
Whatever the woman had come up with this time, had better make some sense. Olivia boarded a cab and headed to the location as asked in the text message she received last night. It was better than ending her moment in the office to be there, she thought while the man on the sterling did his job. When would all of these be over? Her thoughts drifted and she sat up on the seat, clutching her handbag tight to herself. This was not the right time to bother herself with these questions. All she knows she needs in the meantime is to know why Victoria had called for another meeting. Well, she was going to know in the end. So why bother? She lifted her head to look outside the cab and rays of sunlight came off at her, reminding her of how the day had just started. Soon, the cab halted at the front of the gate. “I have arrived, ma'am.” the man who handled the journey process called the attention of Olivia who looked like she was lost in a world of her thoughts. “Thank you.” She greeted
Shit! Why did she forget to tell Olivia of the little idea that popped up in her head before leaving the office? The woman hopped in her car and heaved a sigh. It was not so hard to return to the office, take a seat and discuss with her about her plans. But on second thought, she thought back to Mr. Steele and how he was everywhere, seeking answers to the questions he asked Olivia the other day. The man was clever and wouldn't think twice before knowing that the woman lied about her answer. This way, he would pursue other ways to know and even go as far as bringing some of the other staff into the picture. It was a long day at the office, there was a need to be at home. But after many thoughts and unanswered questions, Victoria started the car engine and began her journey out of the large compound. The man who seemed like he lived at the gate, forever, opened up for her to drive out and she did, she heaved a deep sigh. There was a need to meet with Olivia as soon as possible and
“Have you told him yet?” Olivia strolled into the medium-sized living room. “Has he talked about it, rather?”“Uh, no,” Emily shook her head. “I texted him that night, but got no reply.”“Oh, I see,” Olivia bobbed her head. “Why is he yet to talk about it?”“I wouldn't know,” the woman answered back. “There is time for everything. Now may not be the right time to go on dates.”“You are right,” Olivia nodded as she squeezed a spoonful of the nourishment in her mouth. “He'd come around, don't think about it.”“Who says I am troubled by that?” Emily sneered. “Mr. Stone has a preference for me. I like him, too. I am not bothered about anything. Nothing at all.”Olivia altered her position on the chair and began. “Would you date him if he asked you to?”A smile appeared on Emily's countenance and she switched her position on the couch, confronting Olivia. Her face contorted red and she glanced away, then back at Olivia. “Why do you ask, Liv?”“Why not?” Olivia questioned back. “You are my
