CADEN'S POV

I watched her gasp for air and it filled me with so much pleasure—blood rushing to my cock making me feel like an apex predator. After Gretchen's little display of discarding me like I was nothing, Maeve's red face made me feel powerful again.

The way her throat worked desperately under my grip, the small whimpering sounds she made, the fear in her eyes mixed with that stubborn defiance that never quite died—it all fed something dark and hungry inside me.

"Ca‐caden p-please stop th-is," she bit out painfully slow and I finally released her from my grip as I watched her pant heavily, taking big breaths.

She stared at me with those stubborn eyes which told me she wasn't as broken as I wanted her to be, and that was a challenge I was willing to take up.

I walked up to her, my hands trying to get her naked so I could see how glorious she was underneath those clothes. The fact was Maeve was very attractive, everyone who had eyes could tell but she acted oblivious to it and I hated it.

Hated her because her very existence reminds me of why I grew up without my parents and for that reason I like punishing her for it. But what I would never reveal is that every reaction I get from her makes me crave her submission more. The idea of toying with her was my favorite pastime.

My fingers had just reached the hem of her worn dress when she spoke up, always too clever for her own good.

"Caden this isn't wise, you're about to be Alpha. What would Alpha Bastian think of you messing around before an important ceremony? And besides you just said you needed to welcome the prince. You know you can't keep him waiting?" She said cautiously.

Maeve knew how to always say the right words—the right things to worm her way out of difficult situations. It was infuriating how she could think so clearly even when I had her cornered.

As I was about to tell her it wasn't her position to lecture me, Alpha Bastian walks into my room, his expression tight with barely contained irritation.

I could see the relief spread through Maeve as she scurried out after paying her respects to him, practically fleeing through the doorway like her life depended on it.

"Caden, I thought I made it clear that you needed to be on your best behavior today. Do you want Prince Riven to think we know nothing of etiquette?" Alpha Bastian says in his usual disappointed tone.

As my uncle who took over after my parents' death, he was like a legal guardian I never asked for. The man who constantly reminded me I wasn't quite measuring up to whatever standard he'd set in his head.

I know the position I was getting as Alpha today would all be ceremonial formality because the one with the true power was staring at me.

I felt pathetic. I was nothing but a child to the council of elders and now I would be a mere tool to Bastian.

"I was just messing around a bit, besides isn't my position teaching lowly outcasts their place?" I questioned turning away from him as I put on the ceremonial Alpha badge he had handed down to me the previous day.

"True power isn't cosplayed, but embodied. I hope you can learn better skills than messing around with women because if you don't you'd get eaten alive." He enunciated each and every word making sure I felt them.

I scoffed but nodded my head at his words. What choice did I have?

"The Prince is here and has been ushered into his room. You need to go pay your respects." I breathed in deeply knowing I needed to find favor in him because being on the bad side of the next King in succession wasn't too good an idea.

I watched him leave as I decided I was ready to make my way to the prince, straightening my shoulders and trying to look like the Alpha I was supposed to be.

The guest wing of the pack house was quieter than the main halls. I was before his door and I wondered how he would look like. Was he more handsome than I was? Well that didn't matter because it was known he liked fucking men anyways. That was why I was shocked Gretchen was all too willing to catch his attention. To her and most people here, a half man like him is better than me.

Utter nonsense.

I knocked and I heard shuffling within and finally I saw a man who had this brooding dark aura. All no smiles and I couldn't help but think of him being worthy to be a prince.

He certainly looked like one but then my eyes caught a woman inside. Her hair cascading down covering her face but was still alluring and powerful, dressed in what looked like flowing silk that caught the light from the tall windows.

I couldn't help but wonder if the prince brought a woman along. But did that mean the rumors were all false?

"And you are?" the prince asked, still at the door staring me down like I was a suspicious rat.

"I'm Caden, Prince Riven, welcome to Grimwell Pack. I'm here to welcome you and make sure all your needs are attended to. And so, I see you fancy such beautiful women," I gestured to the lady within. "I could have more brought to you," I smiled bowing my head.

The prince's eyes danced with amusement and I couldn't help but wonder what I've said wrong and then the lady in the inner chambers started making her way toward us. But then I realized that she was dressed in male clothing.

This must be the cause of the rumors, his woman's peculiar taste in fashion. But then as she got even closer I realized that wasn't a she at all.

It was a he, and he didn't look pleased at all.

"So, you think I'm beautiful? Crown Alpha Caden.”

RIVEN'S POVI changed out of my guardian attire into the formal Academy uniform as I made my way toward the observation balcony that overlooked the main hall where the candidates would gather. Just as I rounded the corner near the grand staircase, I nearly collided with someone in matching Academy robes."Viela?" I stopped, taking in how she looked in the robes. She looked too small in the oversized fabric, and the colors washed her out. "What are you doing here? And why are you dressed like that?"A small blush made its way up her neck as she replied defensively, "Your mother found a way to get me a position here. I'll be teaching Valerian history to the candidates."I stared at her and said bluntly, "Viela, you're not well enough for this. The Academy environment is demanding, and with your heart condition—""I'm not doing anything strenuous," she interrupted sharply, her already straight spine straightening even more. She hated being considered weak and helpless. "The history instr

MAEVE'S POVWe had just made it to the meeting point when I noticed Kaida and Gretchen were nowhere to be found."They must be on their way," I said, looking for a place to sit and wait for them."Think the others successfully got them?" Nyla asked, settling down on one of the moss-covered stones to catch her breath."They better have. We didn't go through all that just to assemble an incomplete key. And I trust them both—Kaida and Gretchen wouldn't come back here empty-handed." I tried to keep my voice light, but the truth was I was worried. The sound of footsteps crushing the ground made us look up to find Kaida and Dalia coming through, looking like they dug their way out of a pit. Kaida's hair was tangled with leaves and dirt, and Dalia had scratches all over her arms."What the hell happened to you guys? Also, please tell me you got it," I called out as they approached.Kaida held up a silver key piece, grinning. "Got it. Though we had to outsmart some very annoying Pokers to get

GRETCHEN'S POV The S'then River looked peaceful from where they both stood, but Kai and Gretchen knew better than to trust its appearance. The Gerins in it were ready to drown you in there for just daring to breathe wrong in their direction. "Okay, so this should be easy. Now all we have to do is offer it up to them, right?" I asked Kai. "Yes, but still we have to be careful even though we have what they want," he replied, fidgeting with his shirt. "Careful? I had to listen to my dad talk my ear off to get this. It better be worth it," I said back. As he was about to say something to me, two Gerins had emerged from the water. They had blue-green skin which glistened in the sunlight. They were beautiful in an otherworldly way, with flowing hair that seemed to move like water even in the still air, and eyes like deep pools that reflected everything and revealed nothing. "The pearl is acceptable," the taller one had said, her voice calm. "But the bargain requires the seeker to ret

KAIDA'S POVI felt like an ass. Here I was, yelling at her for being impulsive, when really she was just trying to prove she wasn't worthless."You're not useless," I said quietly."Yes, I am. You just said—" She tried arguing back while the tears still poured out silently. "I said you were impulsive. There's a difference." I scooted closer to her in the dirt. "Look, I'm not good at this whole... emotional support thing. But you're not stupid, Dalia. Naive, maybe. Sheltered. But not stupid."She sniffled. "That's not exactly a glowing endorsement.""I'm not done. You want to know what I see when I look at you? I see someone who's been protected her whole life but still chose to come to this deadly academy. I see someone brave enough to jump into a pit for a piece of metal, even if it was a terrible idea. I see someone who cares enough about her cousin to team up with people she barely knows.""Really?""Really. You just need to learn to think before you act. Channel that bravery into

  • Selected By The Half-Blood Prince   22. The Cunning Forest I

KAIDA'S POV "This is too easy," I muttered, staring at the Dyrium key piece sitting innocently in the middle of the forest. Just laying there on a bed of grass, gleaming in all its silver glory. No guards, no obvious traps, no magical barriers. Just a key piece waiting to be picked up. Yeah, right. "What do you mean too easy?" Dalia asked, already taking a step toward it. "Maybe we just got lucky for once." I grabbed her arm before she could go any further. "Dalia, stop. Think about this. See the other locations have deadly water spirits and a crazy mage who traps people in dreams. You really think we are just lucky to get the keys without a single problem?, this is obviously a trap." She hesitated, but I could see the impatience in her eyes. "Well, maybe this one is supposed to be easier? Like the goddess finally smiling down on us with some luck?" "It looks easy but I promise there's a catch." I said, trying to warn her off. The Cunning Forest was aptly named, apparently.

  • Selected By The Half-Blood Prince   21. Mad Mage II

MAEVE'S POV "What's wrong, sweetheart? You look like you've seen a ghost," my mom said, rushing to me with concern etched on her face. And then my father walked in, he was alive and whole, and grinning at me like he used to when I was small. "Happy early birthday, little star. Your mother's making your favorite." I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. They were here. They were alive and whole and smiling at me like the last few years had never happened. Like I hadn't been slaving away in Grimwell. I hadn't been branded a traitor's daughter. Hadn't been living carefully so I didn't get kicked out by my aunt. She was smiling like none of those things had happened at all... and I was losing my mind. "I thought we could have a little celebration," she continued, going back to pull out a pan of sweet cake from the oven. "Just the three of us, like old times." "But you're..." I started, then stopped. Did it matter? Did it truly? They were here. My parents were here and they loved me a
