The next few weeks were the same. I was still testing the system as there was so much of it. I never realised how large a software to overtake a factory could be. I was keeping a log of everything as I went through it. I was almost complete with the first step of uploading a dummy job into the system when something went wrong, and I lost a day's worth of work.

“Are you kidding me!?” I snapped.

“What happened?” Prue asked.

“It came up with incompatible data and then deleted everything I've spent the last day putting into it!”

“That’s not a good sign.” She responded.

“Nope! Now I need to start again.” I sighed.

I held my head in my hands in frustration. I hadn’t noticed Damian walking by.

“Erin, is everything alright?” He asked apprehensively.

“Yeah, the system just deleted a whole days' worth of test data from itself.”

“Show me.” He stepped over and leaned in.

He had one hand on the desk next to me while his other was on the back of my chair. It had been over two weeks si

We walked and walked, until I could walk no more. The house was enormous. We had only made it through a small portion of the rooms. Damian walked me to the library and took a seat. I hadn’t spoken a word since we arrived. I couldn’t believe what was in front of me. “You’re very quiet.” He observed. “Is this where you live?” “No, not permanently. I come here when I need an escape. Like the cabin I took you to.” “The cabin is yours?” He nodded and his words that evening echoed in my mind. He basically told me he owned the place, but I didn’t believe him. “You told me you owned it, but I didn’t believe you.” He chuckled, “I did but I understand why you didn’t believe me.” “I asked you to take me to your home.” I sighed in frustration.“This is one of them. I don’t want to hold anything back from you. I have three homes, this, the cabin, and my house in the city.”I was struggling to wrap my head around the information. “This was left for me by my grandparents, they were gif

As I awoke to an empty bed, I checked the time on my phone. It was 12:34 p.m. I rubbed my eyes, cleared my sleep from them, and stretched out. Although, I’m still feeling weak, I didn’t feel as exhausted as before.I headed to the bathroom, washed up, and dressed. The house felt warm but there was no noise. As I entered the living room, there was no sign of Damian. Part of me started to wonder if I had dreamed of him coming over. I walked towards the kitchen and could hear a faint voice in the distance. I headed towards the patio doors to see Damian pacing the garden on his mobile. I had no idea who he was talking to, but I could tell he didn’t look happy. I slid the door open quietly and watched him pace back and forth. If he kept pacing the way he was, I would have a trench in my garden, which made me laugh at the thought. My chuckle caught his attention, and he quickly ended the call.“How are you feeling?” He asked as he walked over.“Bare foot and pregnant.” I laughed. He looke

Although I knew what was coming, I continued through the broken glass and onto the clear path on the other side. This time no more blocks appeared in front of me. The path came to an end with no more forks. Instead, Prue appeared in front of me. “This is where your choices should have led you. Alone, unloved, unwanted.”Her words hit me like ice shards. I looked down and cradled my stomach. “Your baby would not exist if you had turned away from me.” Damian voice was behind me.I spun to find him standing in front of me. I watched him wearily as he reached out and placed his hands around mine onto my stomach. I felt a strange sensation and looked down to see my stomach large, like I was 9 months pregnant. His hands held mine as we felt the baby move and kick around.“Your choice now is whether to do this alone or with me.”I looked up to see tears in his eyes.Knock, knock, knock.I was pulled from my dream with tears running down my cheeks. Scrambling out of the covers, to look do

The doctor returned a few hours later. It was a little before 1am, but I was discharged and free to go. All my tests had come back clear. I just needed rest and they agreed that I would be better off at home for that. Cleo called me a taxi while I was getting myself sorted and discharged. She helped me outside and got into the taxi.“Thank you.” I smiled.“I will come and see you in the morning.” Cleo promised. The taxi driver warned me over the price of the fare, but I said it was alright. I didn’t mind. I just needed to get home. I checked my phone, which by some miracle, had not been damaged when I collapsed. There was a message from Cleo to say she had arrived back at the party and was ensuring she took her time informing everyone I was alright. There was also a message from Damian.‘I cannot say how sorry I am for everything. I just need to know that both you and the baby are alright.’My heart welled with feelings when reading the message. Everything was just so confusing. My

The abyss swallowed me up. I was curled up in the darkness, cradling myself. Tears flooding from my eyes, hollowness filling me up. It felt like I would be there forever. Uncurling, I stretched my limbs and took to my feet. Looking down, I held my hands over my stomach. “I will always make sure you are safe, little one. Even if I have to give my life for yours.”There were noises in the distance but nothing discernable. It didn’t take much for my feet to move, and they started to pull me towards them. The closer I became the lighter the darkness got. The noises became a little clearer also. It sounded like the beeping of a machine. It was rhythmic and I found myself keeping pace with the beeps. The beeps got louder as the darkness turned into bright lights, and ceiling tiles. Fluttering my eyes to clear my vision and focus, it was definitely ceiling tiles and bright lights that I was seeing. I lifted my head to see a hospital room in front of me. I reached up to pull the oxygen ma

The blue lights illuminated the sky, and the sirens echoed louder than the noise around me. People were starting to gather from inside around the entranceway. The staff tried to get everyone back inside. I watched as they started to attach wires and equipment to her. Somebody settled next to me, but I couldn’t take my eyes off Erin.“What happened?” Prue asked.“I have no idea.” My gaze was still fixed.“I’m sorry, is she going to be alright?” Prue asked solemnly.“I have no idea.” Saying the words out loud made me crack slightly. “Damian, I never wanted it to end like this. I was just trying to protect you both from the fallout and some of the pain.” Prue explained.“It wasn’t your place. It was your job to be her friend and my sister. You blew it on both counts.” I said it was a little harsher than I intended. I saw her hang her head in shame from my peripheral vision. The paramedic headed back to the ambulance and collected the trolley to transfer her to. Cleo ensured she went
