Doesn't her brother has this special gift of communicating from afar? No matter where he is, he could communicate with his loved ones.

   But he had never succeeded in communicating with any of them except once when he schooled in the city and mum was ill.

   He returned and said he felt mum was ill and her connection with him became weak. He came back to check on them.

   And her mother was truly not well at the time. Perhaps he could read their thoughts from afar even if she couldn't connect with him.
