TWELVE | NIGHTFALL

“Your – your what?” I gasped, the hot flurry of my anger peeling back as his words permeated through my skull.

His leg began to jiggle, but when he caught me looking he ground it to a halt. His hand came up to scratch at the back of his neck, and his gaze dropped. “My mate,” he said, his voice scarcely above a whisper. “That’s – that’s what I wanted to talk to you about earlier. I’m sorry I didn’t show up.”

I swallowed hastily, my canines retracting back into my mouth. I hoped that he hadn’t noticed my lapse in judgement; then again, he had said I was his mate. Surely, then, that meant he was admitting being a creature of the night – or, at the very least, something not entirely human.
