(Clarice)

The house is smaller than I remember.

It was my first thought when I stepped over the threshold again, and it feels even smaller now that I’ve filled it with furniture and flowers.

I’m standing in the doorway of the sitting room with a glass of chardonnay I've been nursing for forty minutes.

Maybe it’s not the size so much as the fact that it felt more imposing back then.

The way things do when you're young and frightened and everything feels enormous because you have no power.

(Mason)So far the view from the corner office at Warren Global has been the best thing about this job.I have a vice president whose chief qualification appears to be not having been fired yet.I’m allowing him to continue to pretend being useful for the time being, because firing him in my first week here would create exactly the kind of small drama I don’t have time for.I’ve been in this chair for three working days and I’ve already fired a head of communications who I caught lying to me.I’ve also killed two of Chase’s pet projects and given the go-ahead on a presentation Natasha gave when she was still working here.I don’t think I’m generally well-liked at this point. On the plus side, I’ve discovered that the Warren Global executive bathroom has heated floors. So far that’s the best part of my new job.The phone on my desk rings."Mr Stein. Mrs Warren is in reception."I stop typing.I know they’re not talking about Natasha, but I check anyway, hoping I’m wrong."Eleanor Warre

  • She Was Never Just the Billionaire’s Wife   Chapter 155 The Drive Home

(Natasha)Chase drives us home.I let him because I feel emotionally wrung out.I’ve waited so damn long for him to remember me. I honestly didn’t think it would ever happen.Chase has been talking non-stop since we left Shell Cove.About the kiosk, which he was delighted to discover is still selling the same hot chocolate he remembers being terrible.About the rocks.About a yellow swimsuit he’s convinced I had, which I can’t confirm or deny because I don’t remember what I wore when I was nine.About the shell. He keeps coming back to the shell.I make the right noises.I laugh when he does the bit about the watery hot chocolate.I don’t have the energy to do better than that, but he doesn’t seem to notice. He’s buoyant in a way I haven’t seen him be in any context, and his joy is filling the car.I look out at the Pacific trying not to remember his hesitant confession. That he thinks he was attracted to Sonia because she’s small and blond and when he first saw her on a different bea

(Chase)Lily has lost her spoon. She had it for about five minutes. Then she must have dropped it in the sand and somehow buried it.Now we have the problem all small children eventually have, which is that the spoon she does not need has become the only spoon in the world she wants. It takes us a few minutes of digging in different areas to find it, but eventually I’m victorious."Do you think there’s any chance she’s not going to try and put this in her mouth at some stage?"Natasha looks at me like I’m crazy, which is honestly well deserved."There's a bottle of water in the cool box."I get up and rinse the spoon.Lily watches me with the focused tracking of a small person who’s decided I’m the only one in the world capable of solving this problem and would like me to know she’s impressed.I’m not too dignified to admit it gives me a little thrill of pride.I hand the spoon back. She bonks herself on the chin with it inside ten seconds and starts to cry, hurling the spoon across t

(Natasha)At Lily’s appointment on Tuesday, James suggests she needs more outdoor time to bolster her health.I’m in the car park of St. Jude's with her on my hip three minutes later, working out where to take her.The obvious choices file themselves in my head in a neat list.Santa Monica.Malibu.Manhattan Beach. The little patch of sand near my parents' favourite seafood place. Any of them would work.I don’t pick any of them.I’m halfway home before I realize I’ve been thinking about Shell Cove the whole time. The place we spent every family holiday when I still had a family. The place that became my refuge when my mother and brother disappeared overnight. The place where I could go for long walks on the beach and stay out all day while my father drank and cried in the house.I miss that beach house so much. Not all the memories are good, but the ones that are hold so much sweetness that it erases the rest.Lily will love it.The rocks at the south end, and the tide pools, and the

(Natasha)It’s been four days since I received Chase’s message.I still haven’t answered and he hasn’t sent another one.It shouldn’t matter this much but it keeps scraping my nerves.I’m on the living room rug, stacking wooden blocks for Lily to immediately knock over, when the doorbell rings.I open the door without checking the peephole.Chase is standing on the porch. He’s wearing dark jeans and a navy henley with the sleeves pushed up to his forearms.I have to drag my gaze away from his arms and violently suppress the urge to reach out and squeeze them."I know I should have called," he says. His voice is rough."I know you told me to leave you alone.""Chase.""I miss her, Natasha."He doesn't look angry."I don’t want to keep doing this. I can't sit in an empty house and pretend this is a sustainable way to live."My grip tightens on the edge of the door.I have a dozen perfectly valid reasons to slam the door in his face. But the exhaustion in his eyes mirrors my own, and the

(Gloria)I have twenty-four minutes. That is the exact window I carved out of my morning to sit at this corner table at Urth Caffé, drink a latte in peace, and read the quarterly projections for Stein M&A without anyone asking me a question.Twenty-four minutes of absolute, unbothered silence. Then Julian Morton slides into the booth opposite me.I drop my tablet onto the table. It hits the wood with a loud smack.I look at the ceiling, close my eyes, and groan out loud."Go away, Julian.""Good morning to you too, Gloria," he says smoothly. He presses a hand to his chest."I’m genuinely wounded. I see you sitting here all alone, looking like a woman carrying the weight of the corporate world, and I thought, Julian, go and brighten her day.""You are a plague," I tell him. "A well-dressed, sexually transmitted plague. Please vacate my booth."A waiter materializes before Julian can respond.Julian flashes him a brilliant, entirely fake smile."I’ll be joining my friend," Julian tells
