_Zephyr’s POV_
The early morning sun slipped past my curtains, spilling across my bedroom floor. Birds chirped outside, flying around the inner courtyard of the Silver Wolf Packhouse. If you listened only to the wind and watched the light shining over the walls, you’d think today was a beautiful day. But deep within me, it was far from that. Deep in my chest, a storm raged. I stood in front of the mirror in my room, staring at my reflection. The uniform had just arrived this morning, shiny black pants, a buttoned tunic stitched with silver thread along the collar, and a family name sewn over the left breast. The name of the Silver Wolf Pack. My family’s name too. The future Alpha’s uniform. My chest and throat tightened. Tomorrow, I’d be leaving for the Royal Wolf Academy, the same academy where male heirs from powerful packs trained to become leaders. It was a place of wicked politics and even more wicked expectations. I had known it was coming for months, but hearing Father mention it last night at dinner made it feel real. “Tomorrow morning, first light. No excuses,” he’d said, barely sparing me a glance as he tore into his venison steak. And just like that, my life was over. Or more like kicking off. I could barely breathe, barely take in the sight of my new look. “Zephyr?” A soft knock came from the door. It was slowly open before I could answer, and Mother walked in. Luna Isolde looked as radiant as ever in her green dress, her long blonde hair that looked exactly like mine in the past, was twisted into a long braid down her back. She shut the door behind her quickly, turning to me with a smile that was a little too wide. “How are you holding up?” she asked gently and I was tempted to snort. I didn’t answer at first. My hands were clenched at my sides as I watched her reflection in the mirror instead of turning around. “I don’t want to go,” I finally whispered, not caring about her reaction. I couldn't keep up with this whole thing anymore. Wasn't sixteen years enough for her? “I know,” she said softly instead, stepping behind me. She placed her hands on my shoulders and met my gaze in the mirror. “But you must.” “I don’t want to keep lying.” I shook my head. She stiffened slightly, but her voice remained calm. “You’ve done well for sixteen years. You’ll be fine. Just… protect your identity. That’s all I ask.” I turned, my eyes burning with unshed tears. “Why can’t I just be me?” A flicker of something cold crossed her face. Her fingers tightened slightly on my shoulder. “Because being you will get us both killed,” she said bluntly. “You want to know the truth? You were never supposed to live. When your twin brother died, I made a choice. I saved you by giving you his life. You’ve been living on borrowed time ever since.” The pain surrounding her words hit me like a punch to the chest and I swallowed hard. “But what if I get caught?” I asked. “What if someone finds out?” “Then we die,” she said again without hesitation. “Me. You. Everyone who helped hide the truth. Your father is not a forgiving man, Zephyr. To him, women are pawns, tools to warm beds and produce heirs. I was just lucky to have had him fall for me and kept me as his only wife. So do you think he would accept that his precious Alpha is a girl?” I looked away from her. Of course father would never accept that. She stepped forward and gently tilted my chin up, our gaze meeting. “You are strong, Zephyr. Stronger than any male heir. And one day, when the time is right, you will have your chance to choose your own life. But not now. Not when the world will tear you apart the moment you show weakness.” I tried to nod, but my throat was too tight. There was a soft knock again. This time it was Lani, my personal maid, the third person after my sister in this entire cursed mansion who knew the truth. “Your bath is ready, my prince,” she said formally, but her eyes flicked to mine with sympathy. “Thank you, Lani,” I murmured. Mother turned to her. “Pack his things. Everything he’ll need for the academy. And only the black clothes, nothing feminine or soft.” “Yes, My Luna.” As she left, Mother turned back to me and took my face between her hands. “This is your last test, Zephyr. Get through the Academy. Rise above the rest. Make your father proud. And no one, I repeat, no one will ever question you or make you do what you despise again.” I nodded, heart pounding. She pulled me into a tight embrace, and for a second, she was just a mother holding her terrified child. But the moment was over too fast. By evening, the mansion buzzed with preparations. Father summoned me to his study for a final word before my departure. He looked at me from behind his desk, his silver eyes as calm as a lake. “Don’t embarrass me at the Academy,” he said simply. “You’re the future Alpha of this pack. And who knows, you might be the Alpha King of this community too. Just show them why the Silver Wolf Pack is feared. Alright?” “Yes, Father.” I bowed. He gave a satisfied nod. “Dismissed.” I returned to my room, already feeling numb. The stars and moon were already beginning to rise. Tomorrow, I’d leave everything behind and step into a world built for boys, for someone I was never even supposed to be. As Lani helped me fold the last of my things into the travel trunk, I whispered, “Do you think I can do it?” She looked at me and smiled gently. “You already have.” Of course, her automated response. I didn’t sleep that night. I just lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying Mother’s words over and over. Protect your identity and survive._Kael’s POV_Three days. It had been three miserable days without Zephyr, and I wasn’t even trying to pretend otherwise anymore.I sat in the cafeteria, picking at my food while my eyes automatically drifted to the table where Elias and Finn were sitting. For the hundredth time in three days, I looked for familiar blue eyes and short brown hair, only to remember that he wasn’t there. He wouldn’t be sitting with his friends, laughing at something stupid Finn said or rolling his eyes at Elias’s stories. The empty space where he should have been felt wrong.“You’re doing it again,” Barrett said from across the table.“Doing what?” I asked, though I knew exactly what he meant.“Staring at their table like a lost puppy. It’s weird, man.”I forced myself to look away and focus on my plate. But even the food tasted bland without Zephyr’s presence to make meals interesting. Without him complaining about the academy’s food the last time he sat with me.Everything felt off without him here. God
_Zephyr’s POV_Alpha Tharlon stepped into the room, and immediately the atmosphere felt heavier, charged with an authority that made my chest tighten with familiar dread. Even injured and exhausted, I could feel his presence pressing down on me like a physical force. My father was an imposing man – tall, broad-shouldered and the kind of commanding presence that made wolves automatically submit. His eyes, the same ice-blue as my mother’s and mine, swept over the room before settling on me with an expression that made my blood run cold. This wasn’t the look of a concerned parent checking on an injured child. This was the gaze of an Alpha who was deeply displeased with his heir.“Lani,” his deep voice rumbled through the room. “Leave us.”“Yes, Alpha,” Lani replied immediately, but I caught the worried glance she shot me before gathering her supplies. She squeezed my shoulder gently – a brief touch of comfort – before hurrying toward the door. The soft click of the door closing behind he
_Zephyr’s POV_The sound of my door opening pulled me from the darkness. My eyes fluttered, heavy and unwilling to focus. Everything hurt – a deep, throbbing pain that seemed to echo through every bone in my body. I groaned softly, the sound scraping against my dry throat. My wounds were still fresh. I didn’t have a wolf yet, so I couldn’t heal up fast. Every bruise, every ache from my mother’s punishment lingered like a constant reminder of my failures. The beating had left me feeling broken in ways that went far beyond the physical pain.“Your Highness?” A familiar voice, soft and worried reached my ears.I forced my eyes open, blinking against the late afternoon light streaming through my bedroom windows. The room was exactly as I’d left it – elegant and cold, with the white walls and silver accents. Everything perfectly arranged, nothing out of place. A prince’s room, designed to impress visitors and remind me of the standards I was expected to uphold.“Lani?” My voice came out as
_Zephyr’s POV_The silence stretched between us like a taut wire, ready to snap. My mother’s chest rose and fell with barely contained fury, her ice-blue eyes blazing with an emotion I’d seen too many times before, rage and something else that cut deeper than any physical blow.Shame.She was ashamed of me.“Get up,” Luna Isolde’s voice was deadly quiet, more terrifying than if she’d screamed. “Get up and explain to me how my heir, my supposedly intelligent, careful heir, managed to get into a fight severe enough to warrant suspension.”I pushed myself to my hands and knees, my cheek still throbbing from her slap. The stone was cold against my palms, grounding me in this moment I wished I could escape. “Mother, I can explain—”“Can you?” She began pacing in front of me like a predator stalking wounded prey. “Can you explain how you nearly exposed everything we’ve worked for? Everything we’ve sacrificed to keep safe?”My blood turned to ice. She knew. Of course she knew. Luna Isolde ha
_Zephyr’s POV_The morning air was cool against my skin as I walked toward the waiting carriage, my small bag slung over my shoulder. Three days. I only had to survive three days at home, then I could return to the academy. Return to Kael. The thought of him made my chest tighten with an emotion I couldn’t quite name. Last night had been… intense. Waking up in his arms had felt like the most natural thing in the world, even though every rational part of my brain screamed that it was dangerous. That getting too close to anyone, especially someone like Kael, would only lead to destruction. But for those few precious moments, wrapped in his warmth and protection, I’d felt safe in a way I hadn’t experienced since birth. Before the expectations, before the constant fear of discovery, before I learned that being myself was something to hide.I was almost to the carriage when I heard footsteps behind me. My heart skipped, and I turned to find Kael striding toward me, his dark hair catching t
_Kael’s POV_I woke up with someone’s hair tickling my nose and a warm body pressed against my chest. For a split second, my brain short-circuited because this was definitely not how I usually woke up.Then I remembered. Zephyr. The crying. The… cuddling.Oh, goddess.I stayed perfectly still, staring at the ceiling like it held the answers to life’s greatest mysteries. Which, at this moment, it might as well have, because I was having what could only be described as an existential crisis.Zephyr was still asleep, breathing softly against my collarbone. My arm was wrapped around his waist, and somehow during the night, he’d turned in my arms so we were facing each other. His face was peaceful now, a stark contrast to the broken expression from last night. My wolf was practically purring with contentment. Protect, it whispered in the back of my mind. Keep safe. Mine.Mine.The word hit me like a punch to the gut. I’d called Zephyr mine before, but not like this. Not in the way my wolf
_Zephyr’s POV_ What are you doing here?" Kael's voice rang out in the open field. I swallowed, then took a step towards him. "Getting some air. I'm going in now." Without waiting for a response from him, I walked in the door. But just before I could get to the door, his voice came again. "Z
_Zephyr’s POV_ I stared at the folded paper in my hand like it was a bomb. A prefect had handed it to me right after morning drills. No words, just a harsh look before walking off like nothing happened. My fingers shook a little as I opened the note. Only six words were written in thick, blac
_Zephyr’s POV_ The sting on my cheek still lingered like fire under my skin. I could feel it pulse with every heartbeat. My jaw clenched as I stared at the cracked floor tile in the corridor, forcing my body to stay upright. I wouldn’t cry. Not here or in front of them. I already walked out o
_Zephyr’s POV_ “Zephyr, what are you hiding?” I couldn’t breathe. Kael’s words hung in the atmosphere like a blade pressed to my throat. His voice was calm but filled with suspicion. And that was what terrified me the most. I turned slightly, clutching the torn edge of my shirt so tight
