Liora's P.O.V.

A growl rippled out of me before I even realized it, low and inhumane. It vibrated in my chest, rattling my ribs like something inside me was trying to claw its way out.

The warriors stepped back immediately, but I barely saw them. My body ignited; pain lit up my nerves like a wildfire, searing through every inch of me.

I sucked in a breath, and it felt like breathing a pure flame. My backbone broke with a horrible, splitting, and sickening crack, setting my body on fire.

As I writhed in pain, Stacy crouched beside me, her hands hovering over my shoulders, steady but gentle. She spoke softly.

“The first shift is painful, but you can do it, Liora. Breathe.”

Her voice sounded distant, muffled by the roar of agony in my ears as she guided me.

“Just breathe. Let the pain take you. Not the other way around.”
