She was smiling but I was starting to feel uneasy. Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. It felt plastered on her face. Like she was confused how to show any real emotion. Although yesterday, she seemed to smile at me normally. My heart started to pound. I could feel my limbs twitching wanting to bolt, but I kept my bottom on the couch treating her like a big cat. Keeping my eyes on her.
“Cado said I had to be nice to you. He said you were his guest. He never has guests. At least not female guests. Is that your family? The one with Cordelia? Oh she is a cranky fat woman!” She flipped her hair over her shoulder while making her way closer to me. She never looked away from my face. It felt like she was studying me. Remembering every detail.
“Are you a new donor? Cado has never had such a sickly looking donor. It would truly be a kindness if I just ended you. You seem to have so much inner turmoil.” Her head cocked to the side. The movement was so unnatural my stomach lurched into my beating heart.
“Lucrezia come out of hiding. Mommy is sorry she will never do that to you again. I love you. Lucrezia Mom has something to tell you I’m pregnant. It’s all your fault if I didn’t have to feed you this would have never happened.” The voice that left this woman’s mouth sounded exactly like my mother. Icy fear gripped my heart. I started screaming as the fear consumed me. It felt so unnatural, almost like the fear wasn’t mine. I tried to calm down, but nothing was working. My heart hammered faster and faster. I was starting to choke on the fear. The scream was turning guttural. I closed my eyes trying to force everything to stop. My hands flew to cover my ears. Then without warning the fear subsided. A warmth spread into my mind. It was also unnerving. One extreme to the next. I opened my eyes knowing that I should be afraid of my eyes being closed. The woman was standing above me. No expression on her face. I knew this had been a test of some sort and I had not passed it. Her face changed again. This time set into a cold icy glare.
“You’re just like your mother. Leer fucker. You slut you are ruining this family!!” The voice boomed. I had never heard this voice before. I didn’t know who or what was talking to me. Her long hands started the descent to wrap around my throat.
“STOP!” Cadogen’s voice echoed around the room. In the blink of an eye his hands were shaking the woman.
“Esmeray! Where is your ward?” Esmeray eyes fluttered like she didn’t know where she was at.
“Cado? What is going on?” Her legs buckled and she fell into his arms. He picked her up like a princess. She nuzzled her face into the crook of his neck.
“Let’s get you back to bed.” His voice was the softest I had ever heard it. He walked out without a second look back. Oh but Esmeray looked back. That hideous smile back on her face. My stomach flipped and I ran straight for my brother's room. I threw the room door open. He was playing with blocks while Cordelia sat in a rocking chair that was tucked into the corner.
“Come on Cedar, it's time to go.” I didn’t mean to but I bellowed at him. Cordelia jumped up from her seat. Cedar looked up at me throwing the blocks down. I scooped him up, turning back into the hallway.
“Miss, are you alright? Let me get Miles.” I wasn’t listening though. I had to get my brother out of here. I ran into the study trying to find the way out. I couldn’t remember what Miles did to open the stupid bookcase. I set Cedar down and threw the curtains open. Sunlight poured into the room. Cordelia sucked in a breath and closed the double doors immediately.
“Luc?” My brother looked at me, his little body starting to shake. I bent down to his level.
“It’s okay Cedar I made a mistake, but I'm going to get us out of here.” I started to rip the books out of the bookcase.
“Close the blinds so I can talk to you.” The male voice on the other side of the door sounded strained
“Please.” a female voice pleaded. I didn’t listen. I had to get Cedar away from these monsters. I pulled a large black tomb with gold writing. The bookcase slid open. Success. I snatched Cedar back into my arms and took off running. The front door was a straight shot after I got out of the small hallway into the blue room. The whole house was eerily quiet. I didn't care. My blood was pumping hard into my veins. My senses slightly heightened from the adrenaline. I fumbled with the locks on the door. Come on, come on. Every creak, every sound had me jumping. The heavy locks sprung open and I wretched the door open so hard it hit the wall bouncing back slightly. I ran. I felt like a bird escaping a cage. I flew down the stairs. The morning felt nice and cool. The grass was wet under my feet. I didn’t care. I was going to get Cedar and I to safety. My mother was right. I was a fool if I thought I could make it without her.
The sun's rays felt good on my skin. I breathed the fresh air in. The grass felt good underneath my tired body. My muscles were aching. I turned onto my side. The room was almost completely finished. I sighed. I couldn’t wait until it was done. My brother would have a place to call his own. I rolled back onto my back.“Luc, Look.” I propped myself up onto my elbow. Cedar was standing bow in hand. He looked so confident with the bow stretched and his chin up. He let an arrow loose. It hit the target. He breathed in, nocked another arrow and let it loose. It also found the target.Oh My God! I jumped up and ran to him. I scooped him up into my arms. He was no longer that pitiful kid in the shack. His body had substance. My heart leaped out of my chest. I was so proud of him. I took his face in between my two hands and I kissed his fo
The man standing in front of me was frail. His height made him stoop. The moonlight captured his sunken eyes just right. He held a tome so thick I feared he would fall over. Despite its size it was a beautiful book. The outside was shiny black. Jewels dotted the front. The back was imbued with bright gold filigree. The man stood on an altar made of the same stuff. It was shiny black. It almost looked like water. I wanted so badly to reach out and touch it but I stopped myself. Something about this felt like a test. I don’t know why I got that impression but I dug my toes into the earth and clasped my hands behind my back.A slow rhythmic melody started up. The man on the altar started to chant softly. I couldn’t make out the words. I looked around the meadow. The moonlight did a glorious job of illuminating it perfectly. Wolfsbane dotted the meadow. The music became louder. I turned to se
“Okay Dove, the first thing you need to come to terms with is that you're small. So, your strongest weapon is your head.” Daire pressed two fingers into my forehead.“If you get into a situation where you can’t fight your way out, you need to finesse your way out.” Daire’s eyebrows rose high.“ The first step to finesse is to know your opponent and If you don’t know them. Then learn them.” He took a step in and pushed my left shoulder lightly. I stumbled back, almost landing on my butt.“Good you didn’t lose your balance. Helping me build the room has been useful with your back and core muscles.” This time he stepped into my space. As I took a step back he took one forward not letting up. I started to panic slightly. Before I knew it
I stood in the sunrise feeding the chickens. I have named every single one. Chiky, Elma, Vainy, Leerah, and HENderson. I smiled happily with my pun. There was no sign of the fight that happened last night. Daire got up before me. I haven’t seen him all morning. We were low on meat. I collected the eggs trying to dodge HENderson. He got me good on shin. I ran out, closing the gate behind me. Mean rooster. I sat the eggs on the porch. The morning smelled like the forest around the property. I smiled at the thought of a lifetime here. It was something I had never dreamed of. The carriage came into view strolling lazily up the road. Daire sat in the front. His stern demeanor would have made others believe him to be unkind. The truth was anything but. He was a big man but a kind one. His huge hands maneuvered the ropes with confidence. For a moment those hands were on my throat massaging the vein. Trailing my body until they landed on my hips g
Lucrezia! Lucrezia! My mother’s voice rang into my ears. I came around the corner terrified.“Yes? Mommy.” The booze was wafting out of her pores.“Come here you dumb child, this is all your fault.” Her hand lashed out and landed on my shoulder. “All of this is your fault.” Another blow landed on my back this time.“I wouldn’t have to do any of this if it wasn’t for YOU!” This time her fist connected with my side. I let out a squeak. Big fat tears started to run down my cheeks.“You want to cry, I'm going to give you something to cry about. I’m going to show you what I have to do to feed you.” All the pain was unbearable.
I shook my head. He silently watched as I fought with myself mentally.“ I don’t want to go back to your house. That woman isn’t safe. She…It doesn’t matter. I won’t go back.” He smiled. I couldn’t tell if he was angry. “Okay, then kiss me and I’ll give you the information.” My mouth dropped open. His eyebrows raised. Waiting for my answer. He stepped closer, invading my space. I shook my head. His hand snaked around the back of my neck holding me in place. My breath hitched. Our lips touched gently. The click I had felt with Daire happened. Except this time it was softer like someone pushed a button but it popped back up. I pulled away, not able to catch my breath. What was that? I searched his face for an answer.“Hey what’s going on over here?” Daire’
Our days went on like this. Time passed.Daire hunted and built Cedar’s room. Cedar and I practiced everything Daire taught us and I started to tend the house.&
We were all sitting in front of the fireplace watching the embers crackle. The big man reached for me and pulled me into his lap. I let him warm me.“Well, I guess since we are going to be family I should know you
His tongue snacked out and licked the side of my neck. The heat and terror flooded into my body. Would it hurt? He nipped my neck and the anticipation was killing me. I was a mix of every feeling. His teeth scraped along my neck. Then quick pain; I yelped. Th
I was so stupid. I had really thought that life could change, but it never does. I ran aimlessly not knowing where I was. The well manicured grass turned more wild as I hit a tree line. Clearly no longer Cadogen’s property. I ran until my lungs felt like they would burn out of my chest. I should hav
