LUCAS

3 days after

Something slipped out of my bag as I reached in to grab my laptop. I reached down and picked it up.

I stared at the invitation in my hands, running a thumb across the silver-foiled crest, turning it over. It was formal, elegant, and impersonal. The exact opposite of what I felt staring at it.

‘Bennett Cross’s coronation. Three days. Full moon. All Alpha heirs and their families in attendance.’

Great.

"Shit," I muttered under my breath, earning a glare from the librarian two tables away.

"What now?" Bennett asked, glancing up from his laptop.

This is the second meeting we’ve had in a week and we were finally heading somewhere with our project.

I slid the invitation across the table. “Your coronation. I forgot it was this weekend.”

He picked it up, read it slowly, then placed it down like it might catch fire. “Right. The coronation.”

His voice was calm, but I caught the way his jaw clenched. He was anxious, even if he wouldn’t say it out loud. And honestly? I didn

BENNETT’S POVThe scent of grilled meat and fried something-that-smelled-amazing wafted out from the diner’s kitchen as I leaned against the counter, waiting for our orders to be packed up. I checked my phone. No messages from Lucas. Not that I expected any. He sure must be having a swell time with my mum for him not to be cursing me over the phone. There were messages from Avery. She has been calling and texting nonstop since our last tutorial. I had been avoiding her in school too but I was going to have to tell her off soon.Unless I want a murderous Lucas on my hands. He has been aggressive and possessive since that night.I drummed my fingers against the metal edge of the counter, glancing out the glass window just for the hell of it and then I saw the last person I expected to see around here.My jaw tightened as my brows furrowed.

LUCAS’S POVI didn’t like surprises. But Bennett doesn't know that so he’s forgiven. He cornered me in the hallway after class today and told me he had something urgent to show me. I asked what, but he only smiled and said, “You’ll see.”So here I was riding shotgun in his car while he kept his eyes stubbornly on the road like he couldn’t feel the laser beams I was shooting into the side of his face.“Bennett,” I muttered, for the third time, “where are we going?”He smirked but didn’t turn. “It’s a surprise.”I groaned, dragging my hand down my face. “You seriously kidnapped me and won’t even drop a clue?”“It’s not kidnapping if you got in willingly,” he said. “And besides, you need the break.”I snorted. “If this is about Kael—”“It’s not,” he interrupted, his voice quiet but firm. “But… are you two okay?”I hesitated.No. We weren’t. Not even close. But I wasn’t in the mood to unpack all the layers of frustration and guilt tied up in my relationship with Kael. He was not only m

BENNETT’S POV The neighborhood was way too perfect. One of those rich, manicured suburbs with trimmed hedges and driveways that glistened. Avery’s house stood at the end of the block—white pillars, glossy black door, an obnoxiously pristine lawn. I knocked once., regretting every life choice that led me to this exact moment. I should’ve said no. Should’ve said I was sick, or dead, or allergic to Biochem. The door flew open. “Took you long enough.” She stepped aside, flipping her hair over her shoulder like she was expecting me to trip over myself at the sight of her. “Come in.” She was wearing a silky robe that barely reached mid-thigh, parted just enough to show the tank top she wasn’t wearing a bra under, and matching shorts that clung like they were painted on. “Biochem,” I muttered, brushing past her into the foyer. “Mhm,” she said behind me, that smug little grin in her voice. “Straight to the nerd stuff. Didn’t even say hi.” “I said biochem.” The house was q

BENNET’S MUM I needed to go see my husband. I’ve been trying for weeks to get him to have a conversation about our son’s mating bond situation but he always finds a way to dodge the conversation. But today he was going to have it whether he wanted to or not. I pushed open the door to the hall where the town council meeting is being held and everyone immediately stopped talking and turned to me. My husband, who was standing at the head of the council table, stopped speaking mid-sentence. His lips parted in disbelief. The elders shifted uncomfortably in their chairs. Their expressions told me all I needed to know. I wasn't expected and I wasn't welcome. Women were usually sidelined when it came to pack politics. But I didn’t care. I was done lying in bed waiting for the end to catch up with me. If the Moon Goddess still gave me breath, then I was going to use it.I made my way to the empty chair beside my husband and lowered myself into it with great care, my hands trembling slig

Bennet’s POV“Aha! So you do still exist.”Avery’s voice rang out behind me, as I got to the school premises.I turned just in time to see her toss her honey-blonde ponytail over her shoulder, her arms folded tight across her chest. She looked pissed.“You were supposed to come over last week,” she said, her tone more hurt than angry now. “I made snacks. I even cleaned up my room, Bennet. You… didn’t show.”Ah, hell. The meetup at her house. I forgot.I rubbed a hand over the back of my neck, forcing a sheepish smile. “Yeah. Look, I’m really sorry. Things got… hectic. The whole rogue situation’s been a nightmare. It wasn't exactly safe for me to be sneaking out for…dates.”The last word barely left my mouth. I shouldn’t have said it. She latched onto it immediately.“So it was a date,” she said, a ghost of a smile curling her lips. “I knew it.”I didn’t respond. Just offered her a lazy shrug that I hoped came off more apologetic than dismissive. She sighed, dramatic as ever. “That’

BENNETT I lay flat on my bed, my arms flung out, staring blankly at the ceiling. The weight in my chest hadn’t budged all day. My thoughts had been stuck on replay, from Lucas, to the event at school, to Marcus’s threats.Everything I thought I understood seems to be crumbling right before my eyes. And the scariest part? There was nothing I could do about it. At least none that I know of.A soft knock came at the door before it creaked open.“I said I wanted to be alone,” I snapped, not looking.“I didn’t realize I wasn’t wanted by my own son,” came a familiar voice, light but laced with affection and that trace of fatigue I now associated with her. I shot up. “Mum?”She stood in the doorway, one hand braced lightly on the frame. I scrambled to my feet, closing the distance.“I thought it was Ryder or one of the maids,” I said quickly, taking her arm as my brows creased in worry. “You shouldn’t be out of bed.”She chuckled. “I’m stronger than I look, you know that.”“Doesn’t mean
