“What… What are you?” she found her voice but it was shaky and weak. The creature staggered forward ignoring the way Amilia shook in fear. She was still standing there silently urging her feet to move. Only an inch was left and the creature would kiss Amilia’s face when some unseen force stopped the creature.
“Bad dog, Gree. Did I scare you?” a familiar voice can be heard from somewhere.Amilia racked her head to know to who that voice belonged. It was the man from earlier. The owner of the terrifying creature. It was him, and he was inside her home. She didn’t know what to do. Her feet were betraying her. “You looked like you just saw a ghost? Loosen up, child” he strode to the small chair near the mirror and sat down.“Why are so frightened? It’s not like this is the first time that we saw each other” he again commented. Amilia can’t speak. She was weak against him. “What was your name again? I already heard it earlier. Was it Annie… no?” he put his finger on his chin like he was thinking.“Ah, yes. It was Amilia. Sweet little Amilia” Amilia shuddered at how he pronounces her name. It felt odd.“What game should we play? Hide and seek sounds good.” a playful grin spread on his lips.“I will be the IT. I will let you run, just don’t let me catch you or you’ll suffer the consequences” he laughed.A shadow appeared underneath him. It slowly crawled towards her. Amilia tried her best to avoid the shadow at all costs. She passed her living room out to the hallway of their apartment. She looked at every door, for some help. She even banged some while on the run. She passed the old lady’s door and knocked twice but no one answered the door.Amilia looked behind her and screamed at the top of her lungs. IT was a breath away from her. Slowly, it touches the tip of her feet. It consumed her legs up to her lower body. Every crawl was painful and Amilia saw the burn marks traces on her body. It was as painful as suffering from a first-degree burn. Amilia crunched down in pain as she screamed and screamed. She was expecting that someone would open the door of their apartment to check on her because of the scream but there was nothing. No one opened their door, no one checked their peephole, not even the good lady who checks up on her earlier. Amilia felt hopeless as the IT consumed her chest up to her face. The burning sensation crawled along.Amilia cried. Her protest turned into tears. She crunched down, defeated. She heard his voice first before she saw his face. He was smiling from ear to ear. As if seeing her gave him so much pleasure.Moments later, but felt like an hour for Amilia, the pain subsided. She was exhausted to recognize the shadow looming over her. She can’t feel anything anymore, there is nothing in the air that can give her a hint of what was happening. It was just like that; her eyes were shut close.✒✒✒Amilia was numb when she woke up. She can’t feel her legs or her arms. She slowly opened her eyes and gaze at the familiar ceiling. Her mind was foggy as she scanned the room.It was her ceiling. Her bedside table had a picture of her dog. Her pencils are on top. The wallpaper she put up just to have some décor on her bare wall. She looks to see the same man who saved her at the library earlier.“You are awake” he stated. As if looking at her.“You are shocked” he turned around and sat at the edge of the mattress.“I’m not going to tell you the whole details but your soul is dead,” he said all the while keeping a blank face.“What?” to say that she was shocked was an understatement. Those words didn’t register in her mind. She can’t understand. Or rather, her mind refuses to believe that those are true. She’s not dead. She can feel her heart beating, why would she be dead? She was still breathing and awake. No, she was not dead. This guy was just messing with her just like what the other did to her.“I am not lying to you. You are now dead; your soul is dead” Amilia stared at the stranger in front of her.“The man earlier took your soul life away from you. Your physical body is still living, organs are still functioning but your soul is missing” he explained.“How do you want me to understand that?” he did not answer. It went quiet for a while. Amilia didn’t know what to say. He also didn’t say anything. He got up from the bed and walk towards the window and disappear. Leaving a bewildered Amilia behind. She stares at nothing in particular. After a few moments later she got up. She arranged her bed before entering the shower. She took a bath and brushed her teeth as she would normally do.Checking her phone, the time is 5:50 A.M. She had been asleep for a long time that’s why her body felt normal. She got dressed and ready her things for her class. She walked the same corridor of the apartment. Only glancing at the spot where she ran and was consumed by whatever monster followed her that night. She turned once before continuing on her way. She inhaled the air like it was the first time she goes to university herself. Like it was a normal day. Like the norm, she got used to it. She would go to school and then the diner and go home like she used to. Nothing will happen again this time. It will not repeat, and that was only a dream. Or that was what she thought. She reached the university and Lizzie came running towards her. She beamed excitedly and hugged Amilia. Amilia was taken aback and was forced to move along with Lizzie.“Amilia! Amilia! I’m so glad you came just in time. I was getting worried” Lizzie said with a malicious smile on her lips.“Worried? Why?” Amilia asked as she straightened herself.“Assignments, can I copy yours?” Lizzie intertwined her hands with hers. She was looking at her with pleading and hopeful eyes.“Amilia, remember that assignment we had on Calculus?” Amilia nods her head.“What about it?” Lizzie’s hold tightened but not tight enough to hurt Amilia.“Can you teach me? We only have… 25 minutes? Come on! I’ll just copy yours” Lizzie dragged her inside the university to their room.“Liz, I don’t think this is a good idea” Amilia reasoned but the latter wasn’t listening.Lizzie continued to copy Amilia’s homework. Amilia sat beside her friend and watch in defeat. She scanned the room and found an unfamiliar face. He was just staring at the board and not moving an inch.“Announcement to all students, classes are now being suspended due to a sudden meeting with the faculty. Thank you” students cheered upon hearing the news over the speaker.“Wooooh! Thank God!” Lizzie cheered as well.“Are you that happy?” Amilia asked while arranging her notebook inside her bag.“Of course! Because class suspension means we can both go to the mall” she excitedly exclaimed.Amilia shook her head. Trying to figure out what good excuse she can use right now. Lizzie seemed to pick up what Amilia was thinking and grab hold of her arm.“You can say no to me this time. Your part-time wouldn’t start soon. Besides, you need some time for yourself” Lizzie pull Amilia up.“Now, the time has come for you to taste some milk tea” she dragged her friend who has now a dread look on her face.“Why do you need to help them? They had turned their back on you. I am the only one left on your side! You have created me just like you. Why? Why do they matter most than me?”✒✒✒“Amilia! Come on!” Lizzie shouted from the entrance of a cosmetic shop.Amilia was reluctant to follow. Shopping was not her thing. She once tried to escape Lizzie’s shopping galore but failed miserably. She wanted to just put up with Lizzie’s shopping than waking up one morning with a ton of paper bags full of clothes in her room.“Oh my! Oh my!” Lizzie run to a shelf full of dresses and tried picking something.Amilia spotted the lone chair of hope at the center of the boutique. Without waiting for anything she went to sit there. Knowing that Lizzie would take her time.“Amilia! Amilia! Fit this!” Lizzie came towards her with a bunch of dresses.“This? No, I can’t.” Amilia refused gently pushing the dress away.“Nope!” Lizzie firmly said. She hoisted Amilia up and pushed her towards the nearest fitting roo
Amilia was getting tired. Getting out of consciousness and waking up in her room alone. She was growing tired of it. She needs to get used to things that were far from normal. She thought as soon as she opened her eyes. She got out of bed and stare at the mirror. She was still in yesterday’s clothes and her hair was in disarray. Her stomach growled. Not minding her appearance, she walked out into the kitchen.“Oh my god!” Amilia jumped out when she saw a man relaxedly sitting on her couch. He raised his brow in question.“Why are you sitting there?” Amilia throws him an accusing finger.“Why? Do you want me to stand here?” He said.“Well, no… I mean. I’m hungry.” She stuttered a little before proceeding to the kitchen.“Want some cereals?” Amilia offered.“I don’t eat.” He answered.Amilia shrugged. It was just her attempt on trying to start a conversation. She poured a lot into her bowl and added two glasses of milk. Amilia was famished. The last meal she had was before the accident a
“Why didn’t you do something to save the child?” Amilia silently asks him. They were at the hospital. The mother was in the operation room. The baby? She was proclaimed dead on arrival. Amilia was silent, hanging her head down. Something was pressing in her chest and an unsettling feeling inside her stomach. She wanted to cry and shout to release what she was feeling inside.“Why do you care?”Yeah, he is right. Why does she? The mother and daughter were just nobody. It was the first time in her life that she saw them on the bus. They were not familiar faces and yet, she can’t stop herself from feeling hurt and lost.“You just got curious about them. You don’t need to care. It was not your loss.” With that, Amilia threw him a glare. What does he know? He had the strength to help them but he just declares the baby’s death. He just let it happen and didn’t help. He is not a human so he won’t understand what human feels. Or how is it hard to be eaten by your conscience?“What? Am I wrong?
“What? Is it my fault now?” Mother shouted, her eyes glaring at my father who was matching her stares.“Is it not true? If you hadn’t gone to that place everything wouldn’t be like this! Your daughter would have had a normal life!” Father retorted back.I was watching them from the door frame of the kitchen. Crying silently. Ever since Mother and I got back from what looked like a church they had been arguing. Sometimes Mother would throw things at Father out of frustration. Father would dodge it followed by a remark that would piss my mother more. They didn’t know that I was watching. I was careful not to make a sound or let them see me. I’m scared but I can’t voice it out. My parents were arguing because of me and I was forced to watch it every single time. Because they told me so. They were scared of me.✒✒✒Puffing, Amilia entered her apartment. She looked for her phone and found it lying on the living room table. It is what that guy picked up earlier. Dead batt, Amilia cursed. How
Amilia rushed inside the restaurant. Her nose was blaring and out of breath. She stopped at the door to pause and collect herself and gathered enough breath. She then strides until she reached Lizzie’s back. Zephyr looked at her. His eyes were still that blank stare that you will be sucked in if you are not careful. Lizzie too looked over to see her friend, sweating and gasping for breath.“Amilia, what happened to you?” Lizzie stood up to aid her friend.“Stay away from him, Liz” Amilia pulled her friend behind her and stand as a shield. After spending an amount of time with him, Amilia developed a fear and somewhat braveness of things she thought she can handle. Whatever those are. So far, the thing she can handle was to throw daggers at him with her eyes. But she can’t let Zephyr know.“So, it’s you,” Zephyr said sounding like she was looking for her for a long time.“What do you want?” Amilia answered her with a low and warning tone. There was always something weird about him. From
They reached their destination; the two women were already up. Amilia looked outside scanning the whole place. They stopped at the front of a rundown house. The walls are stripped of color and some had dark spots on them.Amilia tried to picture the place during the day. Zephyr got down and pay for their fare. Amilia cautiously followed but not before throwing Lizzie a reassuring nod. If something is reassuring about this, it’s the man who came with them and that she can only see him.“Let’s go inside. I’m sorry the place is a bit… messy.” Zephyr said.It was an understatement as Amilia looked over the place again. Everything looks rusty and old. The atmosphere screams of danger. They were on the farthest part of what can be called a subdivision. The house was abandoned as if there is an imaginary line between the last house and the place that nobody would dare to enter.“It looks haunted, Amilia,” Lizzie whispered while looking worriedly at Zephyr’s back. It was as if she was afraid t
Amilia was tiptoeing as she descends the stairs. They were still at Zephyr’s place. She didn’t know what had gotten to Lizzie’s head and decided to spend the night here. She just accepted her friend’s decision and get on with it.But Amilia knew she wasn’t supposed to be here. Heck, she wasn’t supposed to be near Lizzie. Amilia was scared to be a monster, to have something evil consume her body, as per Zephyr’s story but she’s more afraid of scarring her friend for life. So, she decided. She’ll have to leave tonight. When Lizzie was in deep sleep and Zephyr would not question her actions. Amilia looked back at the stairs she had descended, no sign of awake people. Sighing softly, she looked ahead but was shocked to see a stoic face in the dark.“What are you doing?”Amilia clutched her chest. Her heart was beating frantically. Her soul almost left her body. Wait. She doesn’t have that anymore.“Are we still pretending that you can’t see me?” He said again when he didn’t get an answer.
“Run!”Adrenaline rushed into Amilia’s body. She did as she was told. She runs. But where? She didn’t know. She just run. Away from the creatures. Away from him. She willed her trembling legs to put a distance with everything the best she could. But before she can get the chance to get to the other side of the park, the flying creature landed in front of her. She once again stared at the blackness of its orb. When the creature opened its mouth, it was as if she was facing a deep cave. Then it all happened so fast. She was mesmerized by its mouth that she had forgotten that it also had an arm. Just when Amilia felt the boney fingers clasp around her wrist that she got awakened. But it was already too late. Black spots consumed Amilia’s vision. She fought through the hazy sight to no avail. She felt herself flying. Then falling. It was dark. Not the darkness during midnight nor the blackouts. It was a different kind of dark. No eeriness and no peacefulness. Nothing was in there. It was j
