Chapter 05

She never cared about him nor his feelings. A part of him had assumed her return was to reconcile with him and correct her mistakes, but he now knew better. He knew damn well why she truly was back.

An heir, her father must have asked her to produce an heir. Then she must have remembered he existed.

Kenzo stepped backwards, trying really hard to conceal the look of disappointment on his face. He let out an almost sad smile, he didn't want her to get a reaction out of him or for her to think her hurtful words bothered him that much.

"Is that it, Helena?" He muttered, Helena rose her brows.

"Is that why you're here? An heir? Is that what your dad asked of you this time around? Is that.." His broken voice gave him away. He couldn't stop himself from feeling that way.

"Is that all you think about me? Someone you can use and dump and then come back to when you need me? Helena, are you serious?"Helena stared on in confusion. She couldn't understand what was going on. He was misunderstanding her and was overthinking.

"Kenzo.." She tried to move over to him but he stopped her.

"Forget it, Helena. If that's why you're here, then forget it. Cause it's never happening. I won't be used by you once again, never. You might as well leave and go back to Canada" He said and then walked away leaving Helena alone to her thoughts and in confusion.

"He's never going to agree, would he?" She muttered to herself as she walked back into the room, laying in the bed alone and in silence, her mind replaying Kenzo's words.

Kenzo's flashback ended and he continued with the day's work.

** Two days later **

Gianna rushed in alerting Kenzo immediately and he raised his brows in confusion.

"Sir.." She started, visibly fidgeting.

Kenzo deepened his brows getting impatient already.

"The deal fell off" She muttered, after finally mustering courage. Kenzo's eyes widened in shock.

"The deal?" He asked, once again to be sure and Gianna only nodded in confirmation.

Kenzo got up on his feet and paced round his office three times with his hands on his chin.

"But we were this close.. what went wrong, Gianna?" He asked with a disturbed look on.

The deal was one they had been working on for years. It was a construction contract for the President of the country who wanted to start a new project and Alfredo Enterprise being the biggest construction company was undoubtedly their first choice but there were other big contenders too so the president office announced they would take their time choosing and just three weeks ago, Alfredo Enterprise got an email that they had been chosen and all that was needed was just to finalize the contract, so what went wrong now was the first question on Kenzo's mind.

"Actually.." Gianna started, bringing him out of his thoughts, he raised his left brow giving her his attention.

"An inside source said Laurent Enterprise got the deal" She dropped the bombshell.

Kenzo's brows deepened in confusion as he adjusted his stance, now moving from his initial position, straightening his positions.

"Laurent?" He asked, almost in a mocking tone. It was an unbelievable take.

Laurent Enterprise only dealt with Marketing, so what was she talking about?

But.. two years ago when they had met at the get together, the ladies did mention Laurent Enterprise were venturing into construction. But that was back home in Canada right?

He was confused, he took a side glance at Gianna and she nodded in confirmation.

But he still couldn't bring himself to believe it.

"Get ready" He said suddenly getting on his feet. Gianna straightened her posture with a confused look on as she watched Kenzo put on his coat.

"To where?" She asked.

"The presidential office in charge" He muttered as he walked out of his office and she followed suit.

"Sir? I'm sorry but you can't go in there" The security stopped them from the umpteenth time.

Kenzo's guard got in between them, preventing the security from touching his boss.

Gianna also jumped into action. "Do you know who this is?" She asked, almost getting angry.

Kenzo sighed, straightened his suit where the security had touched him.

"Get out of my way." He said with a straight face.

The security man also sighed in frustration.

"Sir, I truly understand how important you are and how close you are to Mr Saltzman, but I really am not allowed to have anyone in his office." He explained.

"And why's that?" Gianna asked, now calming down.

"There's an important guest in there" He muttered.

Gianna scoffed. She couldn't believe him. Important? Who was more important than the Kenzo Alfredo himself.

"Sir?" She turned to meet Kenzo's gaze and he only gestured to her with an arched brow and Gianna nodded, understanding him immediately.

"Get him out of our way" She ordered the guard and he sprut into action immediately grabbing the man out of the way and Gianna pushed the door open and Kenzo stepped in.

He walked almost fully into Mr Saltzman office only to stop fully on his tracks at the unbelievable scene in front of him.

Seated there in front of Mr. Saltzman with her legs crossed on top of each other, in her usual red sleeveless gown, her red lipstick sitting gracefully on her lips, was his wife, Helena.

After their last banter two nights ago, he hadn't seen her at home. She hadn't come home and he had brushed it off, thinking she had left as usual after she failed to get what she wanted. He should have known she never stopped until she got what she wanted.

He took a glance a the papers on the table, not papers, pictures. It was.. he couldn't believe what he was seeing from afar, so he walked closer to them. Helena got on her feet slowly. "Hey.." He ignored her as he picked up one of the pictures.

It was his buildings. The one that had collapsed. All three, three pictures of them on sight. Before they collapsed and after.

Chapter 46Sleep With Me, Dear HusbandThe door clicked softly as Helena stepped into the apartment, her fingers curling around the edge of the frame. She hadn’t been here in weeks. The familiar scent; a blend of cedarwood and something uniquely Kenzo, washed over her like a warm tide. Home. She took a breath and moved further inside, her feet cushioned by the plush rugs he’d added since her last stay. Her gaze scanned the space: clean, quiet, lived-in. Yet, something felt… different. The lights had been dimmed, replaced by the soft flicker of candles spread across the room. Gentle instrumental music played in the background, and the faint scent of fresh lilies hung in the air. Her favorite.“Kenzo?” she called out, voice still a little hoarse from recovery. No answer. She took another step forward and spotted the low table in the living room. A small covered dish sat in the center, next to a bottle of chilled sparkling grape juice and two glasses. Her brows lifted. Then she saw it; a

Chapter 45Peace and PromisesThe soft hum of the hospital room lingered in the early morning light. Rays of sun filtered through the blinds, casting faint stripes across the white walls and Helena’s peaceful face. Her chest rose and fell in a rhythm that Kenzo had come to memorize over the past few weeks; slow, fragile, but steady.Kenzo sat slouched in the chair beside her bed, his hand still loosely wrapped around hers from the night before. The crumpled letter lay folded in his jacket pocket, though its words echoed relentlessly in his mind. She stirred. His eyes snapped open, posture straightening instantly. Her fingers twitched beneath his, and then her lashes fluttered. Slowly, she blinked her way into consciousness, the pale amber light warming her skin.“Hey,” she whispered, her voice weak but familiar.Kenzo leaned closer. “Hey.”For a second, neither said anything. There was no need to.Her gaze drifted to their joined hands. “You stayed.”“Of course I stayed.”Helena’s lip

Chapter 44Her Goodbye LetterThe room was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of evening seeping through sheer curtains. The machines by Helena’s bedside beeped with slow precision, each pulse a quiet reminder of her fragility. She was resting, finally, after a grueling round of treatment. Her breathing had steadied, but her frame still looked too delicate against the white sheets.Kenzo sat in the corner, arms resting on his knees, head bowed. He hadn’t meant to find the letter. It had fallen from between the pages of one of her old sketchbooks, the one tucked into her suitcase that Gianna had dropped off earlier. At first, he thought it was just another set of notes. She often wrote when she couldn’t sleep. But the second he saw his name in her handwriting, just his name on the front of a sealed envelope, his chest clenched. To Kenzo, in case I don’t get the chance to say it in person. He had stared at it for a full minute before peeling it open, hands trembling. Now, letter in hand,

Chapter 43The Last StandThe conference room was brighter than Helena remembered.Glass walls let the midday sun spill across the sleek marble floors, casting sharp lines and reflections. Her company’s emblem gleamed on the far wall, once a symbol of pride. Today, it felt heavier, like a name she was about to surrender.Helena sat at the head of the long oval table, papers stacked neatly before her, fingers clasped to still their tremble. Around her sat the board of directors, her department heads, and a few key shareholders. Aaron’s seat was conspicuously filled, though his posture leaned back in smug anticipation.Kenzo stood by the door.He wasn’t here as a businessman or a representative. He was here for her. Just her.The hum of low conversation faded as Helena stood.“Thank you all for being here,” she began, her voice clear but soft. “This meeting wasn’t scheduled, but it is necessary.”Her eyes swept the room. Many of these faces had doubted her return. Some still did. But it

Chapter 42Confronting the TruthKenzo barely slept. The night had dragged into the kind of dawn that felt more like dusk. The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and anxiety. Helena had drifted in and out of sleep, murmuring now and then, but she hadn’t said much else.He stayed beside her until the morning light began to cut through the blinds, casting pale gold across her still figure. His fingers had remained curled loosely around hers, but his mind was elsewhere, swirling, clawing at the puzzle she refused to let him solve.Something was wrong.More than just exhaustion. More than fainting. And he needed answers.By mid-morning, he stepped out of the room, giving himself space to think. Or maybe to breathe. The hospital’s side lobby was quiet. He called Alec.“Come to the hospital,” Kenzo said flatly. “Bring Gianna. Now.”Alec and Gianna arrived within the hour. Kenzo was already waiting in one of the consultation rooms, pacing. When they stepped inside, he didn’t waste a secon

Chapter 41Lines CrossedThe air inside the event hall buzzed with anticipation. Journalists, executives, and stakeholders filled the marble space, camera lights blinking like stars. Kenzo’s company was unveiling its latest eco-conscious skyscraper project, and Helena had played a silent but powerful hand in organizing the event. Even after everything, after the quiet days apart and the unanswered calls—she had followed through on her promise to help him redeem the company’s image. She stood by the stage, just off to the side, dressed in a sleek cream pantsuit that contrasted the deep green of the backdrop. Her heels were planted firm, shoulders squared, smile composed. No one could tell that her legs ached, that her breathing was shallow, that she hadn’t slept the night before. She wouldn’t let them see. From the other side of the room, Kenzo’s eyes caught hers for the briefest second. He wasn’t supposed to be looking at her, but he was. Not with warmth, just with guarded curiosity.
